Hi everyone!  I'm interested in using this script; is there anyone who's smarter than me who can teach me how to use AviSynth, specifically with this script?  I found a tutorial, but it's still gibber-jabber.  Thank you!

PS- if there's a tutorial somewhere in this thread, please forgive me.  Twenty pages is a lot ot sift through.

Also are there any before and after examples to get a qualitative feel of the improvement?

I think the problem with Leia's window is that it doesn't mesh with how windows actually  look in full daylight.  In general you'd see a certian amount of reflection in the window... especially so in the case of Leia's window since it is a long curved surface.  If the scene was at night ,then full "see through" version would be more approriate.

I think the whole ladder discussion is a bit out there, but I always assumed the ladder folded away into the hull.   It would seem silly for a ladder not to be designed into the x-wing, since the cockpit is so high off the ground . It'd probably have a few more (and smaller) segments than the image below, but it's good enough for illustrative purposes.

Let me explain to you....

I think that was the supidest post I've ever read on this forum.

...and that's sure saying something!  :P

But more on topic.  Ady's HD version of Star Wars does have some color correction and slight tweaks like Han shoots first (if I remember correctly) so it's an enhanced version of the SE version.

i thought i'd better post this clip as there has been a lot of discussion about this scene. But this will definitely be the last one until the trailer. again the audio is a temp track so please no more comments about the levels of the fx etc. Most of the live action shots aren't the final versions but you'll have to wait until ESB:R is released to see those. Don't want to spoil everything. lol

ION CANON 720p XVID

Looks pretty good.  the only thing I'd recommend is adding just a little bit of noise to the SD viewport.  It looks too static and has sort of an artificial composite look even though the set was real.

You probably are aware of this since "Most of the live action shots aren't the final versions" but I thought constructive comments are always welcome by you.

Just one question would it be possible to  lessen the thickness of the trees over the path where the x-wing came in to land  as I can't see it getting trough there

Also wouldn't the trees themselves be a lot smaller looking considering they'd be a least 100ft away from where Luke is standing?  They all look like they are only 10ft away and make the xwing look like a toy.  I say just keep the fog as is. It makes the body of water seems big, mysterious, and dangerous.  With the trees it looks like pond.

I think the snow adds character, why remove it? It's not like machinery can't pick up snow... those walkers are tall and the wind is going to be blowing snow and flakes will accumulate as they move around.

I don't see any issues with the snow.  Being from a mountainous snowy area I can tell it gets everywhere via wind.

Its kind of like sand... it's irritating, it get's everywhere, though it's not rough... :P

EDIT: Sorry, this was in response to vbangle

I demand that someone provide me a copy now.... but I want it delivered by hand, via double decker bus with a bunch of strippers (top tier strippers mind you)!

I wonder how long I will have to wait until someone fulfills my request...  oh I guess I could pay 3 bucks to astraweb and get it tonight.

Indeed!

But....I dont mean to sound like a kill-joy with these fantasic ideas coming up now, i just think we've got to be a little more realistic here.

Yeah, the Tie reveal in a ANH:R was one of those jaw dropping moments (even if some didnt like it!) that brought the movie upto date with current technology IMHO (ive always wanted to ask you how in the hell you did that, yet i prefer not even knowing).

But, creating 'moving' AT ATs in computer graphics that fit in with the existing footage, would be something even a studio of computer graphic artists would struggle to do (never mind recreating actors to add extra scenes here and there).

He's absolutley right. All of Ady's fixes (except for the TIE reveal) was reusing existing movie footage from all 3 movies recomposited in clever ways. Making "new" fx shots is very difficult if you want to keep the quality up. The TIE reveal is a "very easy CG shot"  since all your are doing is panning by completely rigid models. Even so, making this shot at the quality that meshed with the rest of movie was difficult and time consuming.  I really think you guys are expecting way too much and adding effects for the sake of adding effects.

The whole let's see the drop ships is kind of silly from the point of the movie's flow. You may not be aware, but originally the AT-ATs were kept a secret until the movie was released. The big reveal of the AT-ATs was brilliantly done. First small vague little dots... audience is like "what the hell is that..."   Then zoom in with binoculars on one "wow that thing is big" ... then pull back to see a whole lot of them..."here comes a beat down!" .  Adding the drop ships like in 005's example shots would pull emphasis on the drop ships, not the AT-ATs which are the stars of the ground battle.

Ady, surely there's an easier way for you to color correct without having to use tons of masks. I did a quick color correct on the original 2004 lucasfilm frame from the pic you posted. Only took me a couple of mineuts in photoshop to find a pure black and neutral color point to bring back the original color in the frame. I also used another photoshop tool to completely remove the unwanted cyan out of the frame.

I hope you don't mind me showing this example.

yoda comp

Ah I don't get it? Is your example supposed to be the same or close to Adywan"s?  It doesn't have the blue tint to it but still looks off and washed out to me..last time I looked Yoda wasn't grey.

Also there are weird color artifacts that are reddish brown on the lower half of yoda's face. The same with his tunic. These types of artifacts would be amplified with video because they would shift all over the place.

I'm really impressed with what Ady has been able to pull off with yoda... black magic indeed!

The way I see it, LFL just doesn't have the manpower or the resources to give these movies the time and love they deserve. LFL is an independent company, so unlike major studios that release hundreds of titles on DVD each year and have the whole thing down pat, I get the feeling that LFL is always scrambling to get a release out. They might have one or two guys sitting standing by at a computer to do whatever change Lucas thinks up on a whim,...

I don't know... have you ever been to Lucas ranch or Skywalker Sound?  I have (twice, for audio postproduction projects).  It is an awesome facility in every respect, and very well staffed.  I don't think lack of resources or capability is the issue.  The issue is that restoration is not a part of Lucas' very successful business plan, so there is no fiscal reason to do it.  Lucas' business is making new stuff for kids.  Period.  I'm still amazed we even got the GOUT.

GL's net worth is over 3.5 billion dollars! I think he could splurge on a restoration which would cost at most what 20-30 million.  Even so, Robert A Harris has publicly stated he would work on the Star Wars for free if given the opportunity.  He was the restorationist behind Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, Vertigo, Rear Window, and most recently the Godfather.  There is zero reason why it cannot be done except for GL's ego.

I think what digitalfreaknyc is getting at is even though the HD Broadcast version is indeed a step up form the dvd the more you compress a movie the more fine detail is lost and more motion artifacts are introduced. Its just a simple fact, because both VC-1 and AVC are lossy compression algorithms and there is nothing getting around it.  Its like compressing a dvd which has mpeg2 at at least 4.5 GB -> 700 MB AVC encode. Sure for the most part it looks pretty good compared to the DVD, but when you actually examine the footage you do start to see blockiness in fast motion scenes and fine detail is lost throughout. I actually made my own personal version of SW-Revisited (just has a couple of tweaks that were for my own personal tastes)and it took an AVC encode of about 2800MB to make an encode that stood up a 120" screen. The scene that really was my benchmark oddly enough was inside Ben's hut because of the texture on the wall kept getting blocky at lower compression rates.

Now on topic... Ady I know you may be doing minor tweaks to the movies themselves (Han shoots first , etc) Any chance you can just yank out "Jedi Rocks"? I know you can't put in Lapti Nek with the orginal puppets, but the new song and dance number is awful. Hell I wouldn't mind an abrupt "cut to next scene" over having to being yanked out the movie completly with the horrible CG critters.
