Indeed!
But....I dont mean to sound like a kill-joy with these fantasic ideas coming up now, i just think we've got to be a little more realistic here.
Yeah, the Tie reveal in a ANH:R was one of those jaw dropping moments (even if some didnt like it!) that brought the movie upto date with current technology IMHO (ive always wanted to ask you how in the hell you did that, yet i prefer not even knowing).
But, creating 'moving' AT ATs in computer graphics that fit in with the existing footage, would be something even a studio of computer graphic artists would struggle to do (never mind recreating actors to add extra scenes here and there).
He's absolutley right. All of Ady's fixes (except for the TIE reveal) was reusing existing movie footage from all 3 movies recomposited in clever ways. Making "new" fx shots is very difficult if you want to keep the quality up. The TIE reveal is a "very easy CG shot" since all your are doing is panning by completely rigid models. Even so, making this shot at the quality that meshed with the rest of movie was difficult and time consuming. I really think you guys are expecting way too much and adding effects for the sake of adding effects.
The whole let's see the drop ships is kind of silly from the point of the movie's flow. You may not be aware, but originally the AT-ATs were kept a secret until the movie was released. The big reveal of the AT-ATs was brilliantly done. First small vague little dots... audience is like "what the hell is that..." Then zoom in with binoculars on one "wow that thing is big" ... then pull back to see a whole lot of them..."here comes a beat down!" . Adding the drop ships like in 005's example shots would pull emphasis on the drop ships, not the AT-ATs which are the stars of the ground battle.
