Info Wanted: 12 Monkeys Theatrical vs. Home Video - a question...
Time

I just watched 12 Monkeys for the first time since I saw it in the theater in 1996. I was shocked to see something different to what I (thought I had) distinctly remembered!

Watching tonight on Flix, the very last scene showed young Cole’s eyes staring up into the sky, then it cut to black for almost a second, then “What A Wonderful World” began playing and the credits started up. All of the videos online I’ve found do this as well.

What I remembered from 1996 was the following: Young Cole’s eyes staring up into the sky, then the rotating 12 Monkeys animation from the very beginning (just before we see young Cole’s eyes at the beginning)- this animation either faded in or acted as an Iris-in around the shot of young Cole.

Is there any evidence of this difference, or is this just faulty memory? Is there a theatrical tape, screener, or preservation to check?

What does Lucasfilm or George Lucas really have as Reference Material
Time

I worked at a Technicolor facility and spoke with the aforementioned Marc Weilage in 2004.

The story he related was that a few guys went up to San Rafael to color the Star Wars DVD release, but they weren’t at the Ranch’s top facilities. There was mention of card tables, temporary workstations, and other less-than-ideal work conditions. The impression I got was that this was quick and dirty.

Based on the results of the Blu Rays, I highly doubt that much more attention was paid to any kind of reference for that release.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

A couple of questions:

Is this an original audio capture from one of the prints you used?

And a few of the darker shots grow brighter then darker then brighter again (jawas/R2 scenes for example) . Do the prints do this, or is this some kind of artifact from the scanning/digitization/compression?

does anybody know if this the editdroid version is?

I doubt it. The seller appears to have been selling this for months while the Edit Droid version was only released a couple weeks ago. The ad also mentions the source being taped from an “airing,” while Edit Droid’s was directly from a broadcast master (and the resolution appears to be much better than NTSC VHS or Betamax).

This. Screenshot comparison please?

I’m using VLC which doesn’t allow me to frame advance, so these frames are close, not identical, but I think they are representative of the resolution difference. Top is WHIO, bottom is Edit Droid.

Thank you for alerting us to the a-Wookiee-ning!

A broadcast-quality Holiday Special! I hoped, but I don’t think I ever expected to see better than the WHIO. This is such a great surprise.

Another real bonus for me is that there’s a clip from my favorite program as a 7-year-old, Captain Cosmic. Awesome!

Merry Christmas!

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Yeah, none of the new themes grabbed me, but I might buy the soundtrack and delve a little deeper. I was actually a little disappointed at that entire piece from Episode IV being re-used during the aforementioned Rey scene.

I wasn’t super stoked about yet another Death Star, not totally sold on Snoke, but overall, a much grittier, more “real”-feeling, more Star Wars-y movie than we’ve seen since '83. WAY better story telling than anything since Empire, IMO.

Indeed it can!

I just got home from surgery, rather battered and very, very sore, but glad to be home again. They are cautiously rating it as a 'success', will see more over the next 6 weeks or so of recovery.

Now you can all go back to your rooting, in its many and varied forms.

YES! Rooting.

Seriously, I'm sure we're all glad you're home. Speedy recovery to you!

OK, perhaps SW was scanned at 4K, but I thought digital intermediates were still at 2K? Correct me if I'm wrong here.

I seriously doubt it was scanned at 4K for the SE in 1996/97.

Snow White aside, I worked for Technicolor when the DVD masters were made and that was *right* when 4K was being widely adopted, around 2004. Also, if they already had a 4K scan of all three films why go back and pay for a new 1080 scan for the DVDs?
