Only for the HDR stream. It then adjusts to Dolby Vision or HDR10, depending on what your screen is set to. The 1080p SDR stream is a typical Rec709 image with proper contrast and saturation.
Can that be done? And would it yield a 10 or even 12 bit image? That would be awesome!
As for whether this changes anything for Despecialized, yes, the change is that I will now definitely be waiting for the 4K Blu-Ray or at least a full bitrate 4k web-dl as a source.
If you’re asking if it’s possible to extract the flat image? Yes. The HDR grade is stored as metadata on UHD discs, so you can easily retrieve the flat image. As for the bit depth, I believe they’re all 10bit video files.
If you can get rid of the HDR grade on the inevitable 4KBD release, the log-style video should be really helpful for those trying to regrade.
Oh definitely. As a colorist, it’s always best to work with a flat image to be able to extract all the dynamic range, colors, etc.
Yes, it doesn’t look like that because the stream applies the HDR grade. What we’re looking at here is the raw data of the stream, without the tone mapping curve, saturation, or more simply put: the HDR grade.

Mandalorian is “out there” in 4K HDR, so the drm has clearly been broken on day one, so I think for those of us who won’t get D+ until 2021 (and believe me, if I could get it now, I’d be the first in line), someone will put the new masters out as well.
Seeing as the new masters are now on Vudu, Amazon, GooglePlay, etc in various parts of the world, a DRM’d 1080p SDR version should come soon… hopefully. These masters need to be seen.
What master does the Disney+ version use? Is it the same as the 2011 master (or the 2011 master but upscaled)? Is it the 2011 master but at higher resolution? Or is it a new master entirely?

Incorrect. It is a new tansfer of ANH, TESB, and ROTJ with different colors and a few differences. The changes cannot come from being recolored as they restore previously missing colors. I think TPM is as well and TFA likely is nearly identical, but unlike the Blu-Ray master (which had burned in English subtitles for all regions and languages) it has a clean image and you can turn the subtitles off. AOTC and ROTS have no color changes (makes sense since the digital file is the original image, not a film scan) and is likely upscaled to 4k.
Pretty sure they’re talking only about TPM, which if so, would be correct. It’s the 2011 version, but regraded for HDR.
But I’m most excited about this project because the current 4K master blows. Too much DNR.

Same call as 2011, and the ADR / on-set audio still sounds bad, though I honestly doubt there’s a way around that.

Have they fixed all the errors in the sound mix? Muted music, unbalanced ADRs, and was there even mixed channels?
The ADR still sounded rough for the film, but was still better than the Blu-ray.
I’d love to see someone comparing screenshots for AOTC, since I was hoping for the theatrical grading coming back for quite some time. It was very vivid and dared to have strong reds and blues. In the blu-ray it all went to orange and teal.
As I understand from the comments the grade is somewhere “in between” of those versions, but it would be great to see it. (I’m from germany, so no Disney+ for me right now 😉
The SDR grade is identical to the Blu-ray (at least to my eyes). I have yet to thoroughly check the HDR grade though.
I was able to watch A NEW HOPE in full today.
Frozen grain aside (which is a constant issue), it looks great, even in SDR. You can tell the image has been processed, but it’s still miles better than what came before. It felt strange watching the film with proper color grading this time around.
I did notice some color inconsistencies in the grade, but they’re minor. And some of the ‘97 elements look a bit low-res in comparison to originally shot objects in the same frame.

Is it perfect? No. Will it work for now? Definitely.
The UHD will be telling as to how far they went with DNR. Unfortunately, streaming video does not make for good grain analysis.
Has anyone been able to compare THE FORCE AWAKENS on D+ to the Blu-ray? I’m curious if the new HDR grade has finally eliminated the oversaturated red channel. The SDR grade looks virtually identical, with Han Solo looking like a lobster throughout most of the film.
This is setting a horrible precedent for streaming, but I’m also happy the 15SE is being rightfully erased.
According to a member on the Blu-ray forums, the new 4KSE is now making its way to Vudu, albeit in 1080p.
Does anyone own A New Hope On Vudu? I went back to look at my copy to compare to Disney + and behold, they changed the Vudu version to match Disney +.

This recent development has me wondering about those Blu-rays that came out a few weeks back. Everyone was aware that they had the 2011 changes on them, but I wondering if somehow they missed out on the fact that it could’ve had a new scan?
I read that it was just the 2011 discs rebranded / repackaged, but can anyone on this forum definitively confirm that?

That perspective really makes the 4KSE look like a desaturated 35mm scan. But I can’t really tell, other than the bluray being over sharpened along with some other color strangeness, how much is related to the way that the bluray was cleaned up vs use of a different source. The vignette, was it corrected for the bluray or is it more present from another scan after they decided not to use the blurays?
Some of the vignette comes from the Disney+ pause overlay. It wouldn’t fully disappear when I took the screenshot.
They look to be new scans, at least for ROTJ.
