The Hobbit - An Unexpected Cut (Released)
Time

I recently just finished my personal edit of The Hobbit trilogy. You may be wondering, “But aren’t there other shorter ones already?”. The answer is yes. Unfortunately for me none of them really work. I either can’t show them to people who have never seen the movies, or I just don’t like them. In general they tend to be cut down TOO much for me.

For example, if you completely remove Legolas/Tauriel there are huge parts of the movies that get lost such as the death of Kili. What I have aimed to do is “guide” the movie away from stuff that I personally didn’t like or felt added nothing to the overall experience of watching the movie. That usually means cutting out any weirdness during fights (basically anything Bombur did) or strange lines of dialogue (like when Gandalf references weed). The biggest change I made was the removal of the love triangle with Kili, Legolas, and Tauriel. In it’s place is a mild love story between Legolas and Tauriel which ends with the implied death of Tauriel (thus giving Legolas better motivation for leaving his father in my eyes).

I’ve payed special attention to making sure that most of my edits are seamless and don’t show up as “edits” when you watch. There are maybe 3 or 4 changes that didn’t work to well but overall I think it’s good (good enough for me at least).

I think this cut improves the tone as well as the overall viewing quality while still leaving enough time to get to know characters and get a feel for the world. Take note though, this cut is not to make the movies closer to the book, or in general shorter. Bilbo is still not the center piece of the last 2 movies and the Dol Guldur stuff is still fully in it. This is merely a cut to improve the quality of the films while still giving you lots of Middle-Earth screen time.

I used the blu ray extended cuts as well as a few soundtrack tracks to edit this. It went from around 9 hours and 30 minutes to around 7 hours and 24. Overall, about 2 hours were cut. I also have 3 different versions: a 65 gig 1080p version, a 16 gig 720p version, and a general low quality version that should be around 6 gigs (when it’s done rendering)

I may get around to listing all the changes I made but it’s unlikely because I made so many small changes to dialogue or fight scenes that it would be a huge pain. However, If you want to know if I changed a certain scene or two just ask and I’ll tell you.
