Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas thread...
Time

For me I think not having a crawl was good. It established that this was not and “episode” movie, but something different, yet still Star Wars. The beginning did need some work though. Something felt missing from the beginning. Instead I think the title card could be improved and I would definitely change the music that goes along with it. Or maybe even add it to the beginning after “A long time ago…” and then jump right into the movie.

I would also change the constant jumping from planet to planet in the beginning, removing the planet titles with it. The scene with Cassian right after the title card at the city between two asteroids I think can be removed, it doesn’t really add anything to his character and it makes him seem like a really bad guy. I understand that they are trying to get across the fact that in a war there is a lot of grey area and sometimes you have to do bad things for the greater good, but I feel that shooting a man in the back is just taking things a bit too far. It makes it hard for the audience to believe that he is a good guy and makes the scene where he decides not to shoot Galen unbelievable.

I think merging a lot of scenes in the movie especially in the beginning would make the movie flow better. Everything leading up to Yavin seemed kind of disorienting and messy to me.

I would definitely cut the mind reading monster from the movie, and much of Saw as well. I would leave him to be a bit more mysterious. I also didn’t like the voice that Forest Witicker used, it seemed over the top to me, so cutting a lot of his lines would help. Especially the “Save the Rebellion, save the dream” line. If maybe there was a way to restore his blue eyes, that would be kinda neat to see.

As awesome as it was to see Mustafar and Vader in the bacta tank, I thought the conversation between Krenic and Vader was unnecessary, and I’m not sure if I like the force choke pun. Also possibly pitch shifting Vader’s voice to sound more like ANH Vader would be nice if left in. I think the only time I personally would show Vader is the final scene.

The flashback on Coruscant, the R2 and 3p0, and the Ponda Boba and Evazan cameos were not needed as well. As much as I liked Baze and Chirrut characters I think their intro could be toned down a bit. Finally I would change Cassians decision to not shoot Galen and instead just have him get distracted by seeing Jyn on the platform.

After watching it a few more times I may have more cuts.

Just my 2 cents

As someone who artistically re-purposes old things into new things almost daily, I know what you’re getting at. But the “trash” has to have some value in it to redeem. The PT doesn’t have that.
Besides, like I said the PT is crap, not trash. And nobody’s turning poop into anything people wanna see. Frink has turned the poop into a joke, so there’s that. But turning poop into a good movie? Not possible.
You can add the purest and cleanest water to mud, but all you’ll get is more mud. You can also take the sicks and rocks out, but it’s still mud.

Custom Crawl Creator: Revisited v3.0 [UPDATED] 3/4/21
Time

A while ago Adywan posted this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F51kdD6raUc

This video highlighted what the crawls for his Revisited saga would look like and how they were all going to follow the same timing and correcting the problems After Effects had with antialiasing on the crawl once it got too far away in the distance. This got me to thinking “I want my crawls to match Ady’s”. So with some scouring the internet I found that our own DigiModification had done some work in Blender, and came up with a project file that can be freely downloaded and used to create your own custom crawl. However, this project came with some limitations and would only output the crawl itself and the crawl that it made was not in line with Adywan’s. So, I took it upon myself to recreated what Ady had done using Blender instead of 3DSMax.

With my project the output is not only very close in timing, but this project also outputs everything from the “A long time ago…” text and the “Star Wars” logo. As of right now this project is not available, however I will be releasing it as soon as I have the guide finished.

But as a way to hold you over here is a quick comparison video I made of the original video Ady posted and my project showing how close I have been able to get. Ganted, its not perfect, but i think it is as close as you can get.

hope you all like it

*Jedit
This project is now available. PM me for a link.

*JEDIT 2
Version 3 now available; works with current versions of Blender in both Cycles and Eevee!

I asked this question earlier and I think it kind of got glossed over, but I was wondering if the 3ds max project could/would be made available so as to create custom crawls that will fit in with the revisited series? I would really appreciate it. Thanx

That’s up to our 3D guy Andreas. I’m sure it’ll show up eventually.

is there a way to get ahold of said “3D guy Andreas”?

or if not that at least could you tell me the fonts you used for the crawls so that i might be able to recreated the technique myself?

I’d love to see a full list of changes.

The VFX did look a bit gamey when up close, but I couldn’t tell a difference with the wide angle shot.

i may put out a full list of changes in the future, but as of now i have no plans for such. my process for doing this scene is a little antiquated, but as i said in the first post, it gets the point across. i have plans to do TPM, and with that i am playing around with the idea of adding Dooku to TPM by replacing Sidious with him. I have a few ideas that may correct the “gamey” look. if my tests pan out i will eventually replace the scene in this edit with this new technique. thanks for downloading and taking a look at it.

Out of curiosity, do you know what method Andreas used to make the crawls? I only ask because I just made one for Andreas not too long ago, assuming we are talking about the same Andreas.

It was created in 3DSMax. The ESB crawl was made a few years ago , but just recently decided to render the ANH & ROTJ crawls as these will be unchanged in their text. I doubt it’s the same Andreas as he would have already had the project template to make his own crawl if he needed to

I can make the Turkish subtitles. What should I do if I am to do this?

That would be cool as i haven’t got anyone working on Turkish subs. Drop me a PM and we can sort out the details

Ady, I just wanna say that the crawls look great! Is there any chance the 3dsMax template could be made available for those of us that would like to use it?

Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Republic
Time

This is my very first edit that aims to improve the much debated Star Wars Prequels. Why start in the middle of the trilogy you may ask? Well, in my opinion Attack of the Clones is the worst of the 3 prequel movies. The problem with this film has been talked about since its release; wooden acting, disingenuous love scenes, difficult to follow plot, ect. and like every prequel editor before me, I try to remedy the major faults with this movie. But what makes this edit different from the others?

Since I first started planning my edit of AOTC, the first thing I wanted to do was give this Star Wars movie a villain. Now I know what you are saying “Count Dooku is the villain”, and you are right. But we don’t find out or even see our main protagonist until the last 20 minutes or so of the movie. Therefore “Attack of the Republic” attempts to give Dooku a proper introduction and subsequently sprinkle him throughout the film. This was achieved through original Special FX and newly recorded dialogue written by me and recorded by voice actor Michael Picher. TBH the new SFX are a bit video gamey, but the SFX in AOTC aren’t that great to begin with, so I think it fits in fairly well and gets the point across.

I also tried to insert hyperspace back into this film. One of the things that made Star Wars so cool was seeing the space ships jump into hyperspace and travel through hyperspace. It was one of the things that gave Star Wars its feel and look. Therefore I have, with original special effects, added scenes of hyperspace in 2 places. The first is at the end of a reinserted deleted scene when Obi leaves to find Kamino, and the second is when the transporter carrying Ani and Padme to Naboo flies by the screen.

Another big change is the the color of Mace Windu’s lightsaber. From the first time I saw AOTC the purple lightsaber never set well with me. Then I learned the origin of the purple lightsaber. Apparently SLJ just wanted a purple lightsaber because purple is his favorite color and he wanted to know what scenes he was in. So I changed it to fit with what I believe GL originally intended Mace Windu to have (I mean, even the first Mace Windu action figure had a blue lightsaber). IMHO lightsabers should only be red, green, or blue, plain and simple.

I have also used a CGI rendering made by Hunsdorfex and replaced the Death Star in the geonosian war room with General Grievous. I did this because I feel that the addition of the Death Star was unnecessary and silly. Now instead we see Grievous where the spinning Death Star was. I have also changed the subtitles for Poggle to give the impression that the geonosians designed the Grievous suit and that it would be instrumental in defeating the Jedi and thus gaining control in the war they had just started. This is also more plausible that they would have designed the suit because the only thing we see them producing is battle droids and super battle droids. Therefore, we can be lead to believe that the geonosians design and produce robot soldiers and Grievous is just an evolution of that.

For the most part though, this edit of AOTC is similar to, and borrows ideas from Hal9000 and L8rtr’s edits. I stand on the shoulders of giants. Get it on the spleen now!

DVD9 Authoring/Burning using DVDLab Pro and Imgburn (Layer Break Help)
Time

So I have finally completed my first edit and have finished the construction of the DVD. Now my next step is to compile, and burn the DVD. this is my first DVD9 project that I have authored and I am running into a bit of a problem. I recently compiled the DVD and tried to burn it with ImgBurn. I wanted my edit to have the highest quality that it could get on a DVD so the main movie is the largest video on the disc. However, Imgburn prompted me to set a Layer break point for my project and i was not sure what to do. All of the suggested layer break points are grey stars (I guess that they are average?) and I dont have any green stars. I dont want to pick the wrong thing and have to trash a DVD (These things are kind expensive). I also dont want there to be a big “jump” or hesitation when watching the DVD. I have noticed that i can set a break point in DVDLab as a “pre-master” but even when I choose a point in DVDLab i am still prompted to choose a point in Imgburn. I would also like to be able to create an ISO of this project with the layer break pre-set so that others that want to burn this dvd can without having to go through the same headache i am going through.

Anyone up for a workprint viewing? I’m pretty happy with how this has shaped up, and the only things that we know are still necessary are:
FX shot to remove Hux walking away during fist shot of (new) first Snoke scene
Finished FX shots of TIEs coming in towards Maz’s castle
FX shot to insert Kylo Ren’s face over his mask as he and Hux talk with Snoke

I hope there are a few small things that workprint viewers can find to make this even better, but I’m pretty excited about where it stands now. With those three bits of FX material incorporated, I think we’ve got something pretty solid.

i am getting ready to do the work on 1, and 3 actually! i am a little confused as to what you would like done about 2 though. what finishing would you like for me to do on it?

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

I hope I’m not overstepping my bounds here, but I just saw this update to the Facebook page explaining why things have taken so long. Some of this is already known by many here, but I thought it would be nice to place it here since Ady can’t/won’t here:

I see we have the usual posts lately complaining about how long this has taken to complete. So maybe i should fill you all in on what has happened since i started this project…
Why is it taking so long? Well real life gets in the way at times. Not long after i started this project i had to put it to the sideline when my elderly Mum became ill. Dad was too old to properly care for her so i stepped in. Luckily they lived a couple of minutes walk from where i lived at the time. So i would work on the project when i had the chance, which wasn’t too often. I could work on little bits and post the occasional progress video or still image, but thats about it. She progressively got worse and sadly passed in 2010. As you can understand the last thing on my mind was working on an edit. Then, just a couple of months after her funeral, my Father was diagnosed with cancer. I was the only one in the family that was able to care for him as he went through treatment. Sadly, a year after my Mum passed, i lost my Father too. So then i had to go through sorting out the funeral, the estate and the subsequent sale of my parents house, dealing with money hungry solicitors and other stuff. This took over a year to sort out. All the stuff i was working on was being done at my parents house; the miniatures etc , as i was, at the time, living in a small 1 bedroom flat so it was impossible to do any of the work i wanted to do.
With the upcoming sale of the house i was instructed by the solicitor to remove all items belonging to me. Everything had to go into storage. So work on that side of things had to stop.
By this time the Blu-Rays were released. A better quality source to work from. So i had to redo all that i had done up to this point, this time using the blu-ray files. Luckily all project files were saved so it was mostly a case of re-rendering everything out, but that still took a lot of time and effort. Then there were computer problems and hard drive failures in which i lost a lot of work already done.
The sale of the house took until mid 2012. At this point i was able to start looking at buying a house. Anybody thats ever moved house or purchased their own will know just what an upheaval that can cause and just how long it takes to settle in. I was moving to another county entirely here in the UK. The house needed some work but it would be worth it to have much more room and a place our own. So, in August 2012 i moved into the new house. I needed a workroom so that took until after Christmas to do so i had to get that set up and build the desks, materials storage etc. Unpacking all the stuff brought up problems. mainly how damaged the miniatures/ sculpts i had been working on were. So all that had to be redone. And i could finally start on some of the bigger things i needed to make. In October 2012 my daughter went into premature labour , 2 months early. So i was back and forth to visit them and that was a round trip of over 70 miles each time until my grandson and daughter were well enough to come out. The last thing on my mind again was the edit.
So work never properly started until early 2013. That will only really have been 3 years . And i have a personal life that is more important to me than any edit. I’m really not prepared to spend every minute of spare time i have working on Empire, even though i have done just that to get many scenes and other things completed. This is not my job, it’s just a hobby. A hobby i don’t want to stop enjoying doing. But it’s almost complete. A few more things left to do and its going to be done and then i can move on to the next film.
Another hold up has been through people letting me down. People offering their help for shots i was unable to do by myself. Then leaving you hanging on for months, giving you small samples of how far they have got with a shot, only to stop contact leaving me high and dry. So then i had to find someone else to help me . And that happened on more than a few occasions.
Some think i have gone overboard by building miniatures, filming live action etc but it’s been necessary. I have things planned for ROTJ and especially the prequels that can’t be accomplished my mere editing and effects work alone. Empire has given me the opportunity to see what I can and can’t achieve. Learn new skills needed for the following edits. If it turned out it would be impossible for me to do something, then i would have to redo all my plans. Luckily things are still on track.
So now you know why things are taking so long.

I was thinking more along the lines of a single large explosion taking up perhaps 1/8th of the sky. For that to work it really does need an establishing shot of a ship leaving Maz’s castle, then cutting to Finn boarding the transport as the explosion happens, then he turns and sees the debris in the sky, with the star destroyer just entering the frame from the right.

One thing that I didn’t consider was that Finn asks ‘Where’s Rey?’, and in this sequence of events it might imply that Finn feared that she was on the destroyed ship.

yeah, i understand. however, there is no way i could do an establishing shot that would look good enough to fit in with the rest of the film. i think that if i did, it would come off as to “Prequelly” you know. this is really just a compromise. you still get to see the ties fire on some unsuspecting ships which gives an explanation as to why Finn says “It’s the first order, they’ve done it”.

as far as the star destroyer moving in from the right, this could be done. but with it being so far away and also very large, i think it would make it look as though the star destroyer was moving at break-neck speed in the atmosphere. idk, just my thoughts on it.

Viewing this again, it looks to me like the ships arrive from the other side of the forest, which is why they’re skimming the trees where Rey is hiding. I’d suggest giving some more movement to the Star Destroyer, as it is entering the frame from right to left. There’s no need to show the individual fighters and landing craft, since they are all shown later to be traveling fairly horizontally over the forest to the castle, presumably to be a surprise. If everyone saw TIEs and landing craft approaching the castle, there would be immediate pandemonium, but with just the distant Star Destroyer, it’s a bit more believable that there would be a few moments of relative calm beforehand.

In my opinion, the continuity is this: The Star Destroyer enters the system and launches attack crafts before it becomes visible to the castle, and only appears overhead moments before the attack group as a safeguard against escape.

JEDIT: In my ideal version, Finn looks up to see an escaping ship destroyed with lasers, but the source of the lasers is hidden behind the clouds. Then we just start to see the ship come out of the haze and cloud (and possibly the smoke of the explosion) as Finn says that ‘It’s the First Order, they’ve done it!’

so how about somthing like this

to do this you would almost have to show a ship leaving as finn is packing up and then an explosion sound then cut to finn looking up and seeing the explosion and through the smoke the ties and the transports heading towards the castle, then cut to Han seeing the last bit of the explosion and the ties a bit closer.
i believe a bit of suspended disbelief is involved with this sort of edit
