That may have been less Lucas “trying to convince” Spielberg to re-do Jaws and more of him idly musing about that being a possibility with the advances in CGI that were happening. That anecdote is third-hand, after all.

True, it is a third hand anecdote. But after all, we all know what happened in 2002 with “some other” Spielberg movie…

So maybe there is a small amount of truth in that story 😉

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

I discovered a small interesting anecdote, while i was browsing around another website. I don’t know if the story really happened that way, so take it with a grain of salt:

[…] Years ago, when I was up North at the Lucas Ranch, getting approval on a bunch of toy sculpture prototypes, I was invited to a party that night. I was staying the night anyway and flying back the next day, so I went… At this party, I met some of the designers and concept artists that worked on the prequels. One of them (who shall remain nameless), whom I’d met before actually, told me that Spielberg had come up to visit George while they were in pre-production on Episode 1. He continued to say that while there, he overheard a conversation between Lucas and Spielberg in which Lucas was trying to convince Spielberg to re-do all of the shark sequences in “Jaws” with a CG shark, then re-release the film…[…]

Exactly. He’s always ripped off older stuff. Now I guess he believes his own legend and thinks SW and Raiders are ideas he imagined from nothing. What a guy.

What else comes to it, when you are surrounded by yes-men for years and years, you might become somewhat inexperienced to accept a simple answer like NO.

I must ask, why do some claim “The Last Jedi is one the worst films ever”? I’m not attacking this opinion by any measure… but I don’t understand it at all. As someone more negative than positive towards TLJ, I must admit it creates a fun, cohesive narrative with masterful visuals. Are you that angry about Luke? Because you might argue the same has happened to Obi-Wan and Yoda, two legends who were reduced to a life of shit. I think some moments are flat-out “bad” (Luke trying to kill Ben, etc) but are those moments really worse than Jar Jar stepping in poop?

It ignores everything that TFA set up, deliberately subverts reasonable expectations without being original while doing so, introduces very unlikable characters (imo) out of nowhere who make terrible decisions but are presented as heroes, has no world building or explanation of TFA’s world building, the main villains are turned into a giant goofy joke, highly illogical and boring main plotline, illogical character behavior, an entire illogical side plot that ultimately adds nothing to the story, no character arcs worth caring for […].

Perfect summary of my thoughts on TLJ.

Oh, and lets not forget the icing on the cake:

I feel that “saved in the edit” is indeed a phrase that carries certain anti-GL-credit connotations.

Not necessarily. It depends on the context and how a person use that term to support his argument.

What i remind from the ROTS Making of (“Within a minute” i guess) Lucas emphasized himself that he likes to shape a movie in the editing and post-production phase. His specific quote was something like “Most directors shot the movie. I shot AROUND the movie.” So he knows that he can balance out certain shortcomings he wasn’t aware during prinicipal photography in the editing process hence SAVE the movie.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

I actually like the “Han-gets-his-name” scene because of one aspect: the imperial officer shows a small amount of compassion to Han. Out of pity he gave Han a family name.

During his service on Corellia the imperial officer must have met a lot of miserable people. And maybe because of that he did not became a callousness soldier of the empire, but rather a tender-hearted officer that has to deal with a lot of desperate people who want to join the army of the empire.

IMO that scene adds to the atmosphere and world-bulding of Corellia. It expands the Star Wars universe just with a small dialogue.

Phantom Menace Trailer
Time

As i mentioned in the [Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **] me and my friends watched the TPM teaser trailer, which i recorded on VHS from the German TV channel Pro7. We watched it multiple times in a row and each one us was very exycited that a new Star Wars movie will be released in theatres.

One my friends saw the “Darth-Maul-ignites-his-double-bladed-light-saber” scene and he asked immediately:

“Is that supposed to be the guy from Shadows of the Empire, Prince Xizor?”

I remember debunking his question by mentioning that this movie will be set decades before the first Star Wars movie so it can’t be Prince Xizor. We were aware of Shadows of the Empire at that time because i had the novel and another friend had a Nintendo 64 along with the SOTE game.

Back then one of my initial thoughts about the TPM teaser trailer was: Anakin Skywalker is way too young. I never changed my opinion on that matter.

I don’t think Xizor has the recognition Maul has with casual fans and the general public though.

OMG, i remember an incident that happened over 20 years ago!

The Worst Scene/Sequence in Any Star Wars Film

Worst shot for me would have to be this:

Yeah George, let’s put a closeup CGI cow’s ass slowly walk past the frame and block the story which we already have filmed. This adds so much realism.

I always wondered if the texture from the CG Ronto is an exact copy & paste from JP’s Brachiosaurus CG model. Are there any side-by-side comparisions?

Lucas: “Just copy and paste the skin from Stevens film. I asked him. He was worried but i assured him no one will notice. Looks good to me.”
