Do you think George Lucas will correct the colors for the blu-ray release?
Time
adywan said:

Well apparently they are coming to Blu-Ray, but only the PT for now, with TPM slated for a 2010 release.

For the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back we get...Phantom menace?! What bizarro world am I stuck in?

Seriously, please George, just follow the Lord of the Rings and Star Trek example and put out the theatrical versions now so you can sell different versions down the line. I promise you'll make money!

Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist

Is it feasible to keep Shaw, but "youthify" him a little like the opening of Xmen 3 (Darken his hair, smooth his jowls a little?).
Choosing either end song will always be a big annoying controversy, I suggest a "neutral" choice. There are many familiar Star Wars themes that would work well for the end, Leia's theme, Luke/Leia's theme, the extended throne room, something everybody already knows and likes?
About Boba Fett's death, maybe its possible to "steal" the later shot of Han throwing the bag at the officer in the bunker, (the guy whos says "freeze") and alter it to be Han deliberately swinging the pole at Boba Fett. In other words we need three shots to kill Fett on purpose:
1. Han's blurry POV of Fett preparing to fire at Luke (that shot is there, it just needs to be made blurry to imply it's Han's POV)
2.Han "attacks" using the aforementioned shot, it would need to be flipped, Han's vest erased, and the background changed to desert. The bag needs to be altered to be the pole that Han jabs with (it sounds impractical but that recut of Superman 2 on youtube has similar stuff)
3.Fett's backpack is struck, but with Han cropped out so you can't see he was facing the other way.
Maybe the subsequent shots of Fett flying through the air, his legs could be on fire from the burning jet fuel. He hits the barge raining flames.

George Lucas to host showing of Star Wars "1977" for AFI's 40th anniversary.
Time
I'd be more likely to give up and move on if the original 1977 version wasn't currently sitting in every store in the country. So, it's hardly being repressed, it's readily available, it just looks like total shit. That just proved there was nothing involving artisitc integrity keeping the original versions from being released. If the demand is still there (i.e. us pissing and moaning) it'll happen. Now with 5 different hidef versions of Blade Runner and 3 of Close Encounters coming out, the whole thing seems dumber than ever.

George Lucas to host showing of Star Wars "1977" for AFI's 40th anniversary.
Time
I emailed AFI and asked which version of Star Wars they are showing.
The response was "STAR WARS EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE (1977)"
I guess the guy thought I was asking which of the six movies was showing and probably has no idea there is more than one version. It's a good thing he doesn't work for some kind of film institute.

George Lucas jealous of Irvin Kershner's Star Wars?
Time
It's a mistake to look at SW with today's compulsive, anal desire for all movies in a series to be consistent with each other above all other things. Empire, like Aliens , Wrath of Khan and Godfather 2, is different because sequels SHOULD be different, otherwise what's the point? Even Return of the Jedi forces ALL the characters to end up in a different place from where they started, and aims for a new tone that mixes the heavy (Empire) and the light (Star Wars). I don't even care that it didn't totally work. I'll take that any day over something like entire decades of James Bond and Star Trek, two series that amounted to a continuous circle jerk. In other words, that mix of Lucas/Kershner/Kasdan/Marquand is one of my favorite things about the OT.

Who got their membership pkg and "letter" from George Lucas?
Time
I have a feeling everybody was kind of waiting on how the x0 project and the 30th anniversary panned out.
But yeah, that weird letter isn't an indicator of anything really. I'm still holding out hope that the one-two punch of Blade Runner and Close Encounters will shame LFL into putting out a higher quality product. Star Wars sure has kind of a desperate, tacky feel about it these days. (Weirdly, my hyperspace membership still works. I haven't renewed it in a REALLY long time. I don't think I've received the magazine since Revenge came out.)

I say forget the OOT on DVD, lets target HD-DVD/Blue Ray Now
Time
It's just tough to get a read on Lucasfilm, and if they are really being diabolically calculating about all this, or just lame. The "we only present George's vision" thing seemed absolute for awhile, and was understandable, if frustrating. But now, they ARE available everywhere, and in the most unflattering presentation possible at that. So all that went out the window.
It WOULD be so simple to put individual BluRay versions out now, acknowlegde that the original versions are now a separate thing and then be done with them forever. They would just be three more basic Bluray discs of 80s movies, sitting next to Dune and Lethal Weapon in the store. Why does everything have to be such a fucking "event"? (And then "ultimate Saga sets" starting in 09 for the rest of time). Just have your cake an eat it too, LFL!

The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread
Time
Just my opinion, maybe the Ranch should be scaled back to focus all the big changes on 2 movies: Episode 2 and Return of the Jedi. They seem to be the ones that could stand to benefit the most, and the heavy lifting on 2 seems to be already done . I think the other 4 movies will be very tough to get a clear consensus on what the "mission" would even be. Maybe just make a few token changes to those (pick 5-10 popular, do-able, subtle changes from a list and call it a day)

In that vein, maybe adding endor and the early superstructure of Death Star 2 to the shot in Star Wars when the cruiser first arrives for the conference. (In other words, implying that there were always 2 death stars in various stages of construction at Endor, so that it doesn't come out of left field in Jedi.)
So, we could have say, "Phantom Menace voting week"-for a week everybody can list one-sentence changes. Starting with number 1. Then a poll to pick the top ten. Democracy in action.

A New Direction For The Petition
Time
Fine, but let's just keep things simple. Point is, a Bluray version will force the creation of a new transfer, that will then trickle down everywhere else. Right now, you can go into Target and buy a Bluray disc of Flatliners or the Terminator, so it's a perfectly reasonable thing to petition for.
As for the people who don't know the difference between HD, BD, blah blah, who cares? They're the ones saying "The original version of Star Wars? You GOT that! It came out last year! Aren't you people ever happy?"

So, um... no new DVD's announced this year?
Time
Any petition now would be smaller than the original outcry for the originals, which would look real bad. An increasingly big chunk of fans actively DON'T want or care about anything but the current versions and the "complete saga", which they'll get forever anyway. Which means the same 6 movies as shown on HBO all the time, but with a few new changes every 4 years for the rest of time. And if you're REAL good, some deleted scenes you can see for free already on youtube, and a new documentary on the genius of it all. All coming in 2009!
