And it’s not the wonderful London Symphony Orchestra that we’re used to. It’s weird. I think the whole score sounds great, and the orchestra performs brilliantly. But whereas (for example) the jump from LSO with Raiders Of The Lost Ark to an American studio orchestra for Temple Of Doom didn’t feel like a step down in quality, the Main Title in TFA sounds like a slightly naff warm up take. Shame. And a bit off topic. Sorry 😃

Are you saying there is a bigger difference between today’s LSO and the orchestra from TFA than the difference between the 1977 LSO and the 2005 LSO?

The LSO of today is a poor rehash of the 1977 LSO.

I don’t know if I’d go that far, but I’m also not entirely sure of the last time I heard them play. But if we look back to 1999 and TPM recordings there were some of the same musicians playing as in 1977. Those recording sessions gave Williams what he considered to be the definitive recording of the main theme, hence it’s re-use in Clones and Sith. One of the biggest losses was when Maurice Murphy died. That man was a trumpet powerhouse. He made those opening blasts sound so good on the other films, and made Indy and Superman sound so ridiculously good.

I don’t think Dudamel’s conducting would have much to do with the problem. He’s awesome as well, and the end credits which I believe he also conducted sound great. There’s a depth missing, which is probably just a mixing decision which doesn’t work for my ears. But hey. It’s new Star Wars.

Yeah, but I thought the rule was the the FYC must represent the music as heard in the film, and I’m fairly certain the resistance march went on longer in the cinema. So I’m assuming that’s how it was theatrically compared to the album.

I’ve just had another quick listen, and there’s about an extra 1.30 of Rey’s theme to what I heard in the cinema, and another 1.40 ish of Scherzo for X-Wings between that and the moody secondary motif for Kylo. Admittedly I can’t be absolutely sure that the Scherzo section wasn’t there in the cinema, but I do know that Rey’s theme was shorter as the last time I went to see it I remember making a mental note to edit some of the concert arrangement into the end titles to lengthen that section as I thought it was a shame it wasn’t longer. Very interesting!

Having listened the the soundtrack album almost constantly since December, I watched the bluray end credits for the first time last night and couldn’t believe the amount of extra music in there. Very strange… certainly not what was on the album, and certainly not what happened in the cinema. (Although that I believe was also slightly longer than the album. The FYC site had the longer credits on there, with more of the resistance march) So there’s the album end credits (obviously just an edit for listening purposes) then the cinema end credits, and then the bluray end credits! No idea what extra info is in there though to necessitate the extra run time.

Info Wanted: Isolated Scores with film audio in un-scored scenes for Despecialized?

Fantastic idea! Thanks. To be honest, my mind was racing ahead of me when I was thinking of the editing task… of course I’d forgotten someone’s already done the hard bit and gone to the effort of making the isolated score with all the micro edits necessary. To duck in and out of that track and the original film audio wouldn’t be such a daunting task, but I may just check this audacity feature. Many thanks!

Info Wanted: Isolated Scores with film audio in un-scored scenes for Despecialized?

Hi guys,

Firstly apologies if I’m not asking in the right place… but my question relates directly to Harmy’s de-specialised trilogy.

In Star Wars v2.0 there was an audio track option for the Isolated Score, but with LD audio filling in the scenes where there was no music. I found this to be a fantastic way to watch the film, being a huge fan of John Williams. It was actually the music to the films that brought me to Star Wars, and it remains my favourite aspect of the saga.

By version 2.5 this track wasn’t included, instead just the isolated score with no dialogue at all remained. (Which is still awesome of course, just a shame when it comes to the un-scored scenes) This is the same for ESB, but I don’t know if a version existed earlier like the one I mention for Star Wars.

Does anyone here know if these edits exist for Empire and Jedi? It’s an editing project I really wouldn’t mind doing myself, but I’m realistic about how much time it would take! If someone has already done the work I would love to be able to have them and sync them up to Harmy’s video.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
