Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas thread...
Time

I loved the movie, just loved it. One thing I might change is the dialogue between the director and Vader on Mustafar. I would simply cut vader’s line about chocking on one’s ambitions, (he’s a sith for Chrissakes! Ambition is all he knows.)

-I would put some low audio of Padme’s dying (from the dreams in III) when Vader is coming out of the bacta tank. I would then have director Krenick saying “Am I still in command? etc.” while in a low volume I’d have audio of the Mustafar duel "this is the end for you my master…I hate you… or just Anakin’s agony) suddenly Vader is just choking him because…rage!

I got chills at seeing Vader’s castle and I thought “wow the Emperor really is an asshole.”

“Hey Vader…so…here is a Lava front property in the one place where you lost everything.”

If only we could just have summary scenes of the clone wars, this could be the only prequel you would ever need.

I was thinking it would be really cool to try and give captain Phasma a more vital role in the film in a small way. I thought it would be interesting if she was someone who had a hidden launch key for SKB on her person or something. Imagine if Chewie tackles Phasma, and then she lowers the shield (while hiding her key,) (hux is giving his speech at this point,) she says “my men will storm the block and kill you, etc.” resistance fighters show up to surprise the first order troops, and then BAM she presses the “button” (I’m sure we could mock something up) as hux is mid speech.

(I figured we could use some footage from Alien V predator of the predator’s big bomb timer. Han could say “do you have a garbage chute? Trash Compactor?” We would think "she’s out of the way for the good guys, and then…BANG!

This would make phasma less of a throwaway character (Brienne of Tarth deserved better,) and would also split up the action a bit between all the recent edit suggestions like moving the hosnian destruction and Han’s big scene.

If Hux was caught off guard mid speech by SKB either initiating its launch procedure or straight up firing, it would show his character as the Tarkin wannabe he really is, just like Kylo is portrayed as the Vader fanboy.

I’m absolutely loving these right now man, thank you. I have wanted to do this myself, but didn’t have the software. I have Star Wars and Empire already in cases, gonna finish Jedi tomorrow. 😃

The Collider commentaries would be cool, and as special features go, my personal list of hopes and dreams was as follows.

A New Hope
-Collider Commentary
-Star Wars Begins Documentary
-Star Wars A Bad Lip Reading
-Star Wars: The Holiday Special
-and everything you already have on there.

Empire Striles Back
-Same material as above, but the ones for Empire.
-The Tie Fighter Anime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN_CP4SuoTU

Return of the Jedi
-Same as above for Jedi

Help Wanted: Star Wars The Force Awakens: 1986 Edition

I love the idea of this edit. I have been toying around in GIMP trying to give a hand drawn matte feel to certain shots, and to add texture to the few bland CGI characters (Like Maz Kanata.) I have a really bad mockup image for Maz, does anyone know how to upload it?

I’ve tried to give her more of a ET puppet texture. (hard to explain.)

I wish I had the hardware and software to undertake this, sadly I do not. I’m sure that Emanswfan would be a great help with this idea.

The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)

Poita, you might want to consider GTX 1070s if you are looking at new video cards. G5x ram on 1080 V GDDR5 on 1070 probably wont give much of a benefit to card performance, (as HBM1 doesn’t on the Fury cards.) Price per performance I’m betting the 1070s will be great. I’m hoping to get a new rig soon with a pair of GPUs, so, I’ll let you know, maybe I can help you with some rendering.

I actually really like the shot the way you have it. Its great work.

You might also be able to get Dooku mentioned earlier in the film by using the audio from the deleted scene in episode II where Obi-Wan asks the Jedi librarian why Dooku left the order. If it were me, I would put the audio for that line intercut somehow with “don’t center on you anxieties Obi-Wan Keep your concentration here and now where it belongs.”

The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas
Time

Here is my ideal crawl. Its a bit long, but adds some background, and a sense of urgency.

The light of the force is waning, Luke Skywalker the last Jedi has vanished. The remnant’s shadow, the radicalized FIRST ORDER has seized the opportunity, and will not rest until Skywalker, the soul of a now stagnate republic, is destroyed.

General, Leia Organa, leads a brave RESISTANCE in the wake of indifference and fear. She is desperate to find her brother Luke and gain his help in restoring peace and justice to the galaxy.

Leia has sent her most daring pilot on a secret mission to Jakku, where an old ally has discovered a clue to Luke’s whereabouts….

First of all, I loved the movie and I only had a few gripes. Finn helping Poe (and Poe accepting his help) seemed to happen too fast. Why does Poe trust this storm trooper all of a sudden? How does Finn go from a brainwashed imperial trooper to a skiddish but likable guy at the tip of a hat? Seeing Finn’s change of behavior, I remembered a clip from Star Trek Voyager where a Borg implant was inside seven of nine’s brain and gets deactivated, and I thought hey… that clip could be used to explain a very quick change in Finn’s behavior. For an added layer of depth to the character, what if Finn was simply a spy planted by the resistance to help Poe? Just ditch the idea that he was a real storm trooper outright, say he was a plant.

I can't say enough how happy I am that a 4k version of this film is now preserved for posterity, it doesn't even matter to me if we won't see it. just knowing it exists puts the historian in me at peace.

Mr. Verta this is great work. I don't presently have access to a PC but I'm intrigued by the process you mention of staking sources. I gather that someone could use gimp to align/register images, what do you do to account for the distortion this stacking causes, (ie how do you erase duplicate information but build up more detail?)

Guys, this work is absolutely incredible. Props to you.

I know you aren't planning on making your 4k files available, but is there any chance we could see a 1440p release for those of us with UHD TVs?

Also, I know the forum rules prohibit asking for links, how does one go about getting on my spleen? Can't seem to get on, it wants something?

Help Wanted: Is here some CG artist with some free time?
Time

Hey Guys, I'm loving this clip change. The Death star should never have been in episode 3. :)

I've been working on my own edit, but I have zero effects skills. I've been trying to raise a sense of oppressive ambiance in the film. We are always hearing about all the power grabbing that the future emperor is doing, but we don't ever see any real world manifestation. (People are going to the opera? WTF?) I was thinking it would be worth it to add some probe droids and clone troopers to some scenes among the general populace (such as when Anakin is going to the opera) and some of the background shots to add a sense of immanent threat, somewhat in the vein of metropolis. I've always remembered the imperial city from the Tie Fighter game looking super gothic and threatening. If someone could do a scene like that, it would be awesome!

I am amazed at the amount of skill you guys have, to be able to scan and then restore these films. It is truly awesome that we can see 35mm prints. Well done. I just wish it were easier to get access to these things when they are released. I've never used any newsgroups or anything.

I wish I had more skill, so I could help you guys out lol.

I think the biggest reason I chose Valorum as a possible reveal is that its totally unexpected. Sidious doesn't need a reveal. We know its him from the get go. Even if you've never seen the original movies, by episode II when palpatine's all grey and nosforatu creepy, you know he isnt a good guy. :)

P.S. sorry for the large font on the previous post, computer was acting weird.

That was another issue I saw with the prequels. Everyone is concerned about the use of clones because of escalation into war. There are no ethical qualms about creating a disposable soldier caste. I'm guessing reefer either played a huge role in writing the script, or an insufficient one lol. It would be interesting to suggest that cloning could only be done by force sensitive beings. This would help explain why everyone is so quick to blame the Jedi for the war and ultimately for Palpatine's manufactured rebellion in episode 3. The idea that sidious could just manipulate thousands of senators with the dark side into submission is so weak if hes working with his own minions. Yet another reason to say that plagueis commissioned or created the clones (everyone thinks the Jedi are for the war, but its the Sith.) If cloning was so easy Vader and grievous wouldn't need robot suits or parts. They could have new organs grown. If only one who is force sensitive could manipulate the force to create life, it would explain the lack of ethical dilemma at killing all these clones, and hostility towards the Jedi. The alien separatists could be anti clone (against philosophy of the force) hence they use droids, while the republic "supports" the use of clones. Sidious can't replicate his masters work, so he uses the war machine established before him, while he is confined to more conventional tech to create Vader. Magnoliafan had something like this in his opening crawl to episode 1. An issue over labor as opposed to taxes. Mechanical vs biological alien v human. :) seems like Adywan could use some of this for his prequels huh? Lol

@ Brimforge: The idea that a Jedi chancellor who is actually a sith is against Jedi teaching is precisely the point behind this edit idea. What use is a savior figure if the group he's meant to save doesn't need saving? This idea has a manifold effect. It gives the Jedi a darker bent making Anakin into an actual hero of sorts, as opposed to some whining Emo. It gives palatine more of an arc because he's not just "super bad guy," he even has an inverse of the yoda as sage moment. When palpatine speaks to Anakin about plagueis he should be telling the truth not only about his plans, but the Jedi. It puts the audience into the proper frame to watch the original films. When Yoda speaks to Luke in empire, he speaks from experience, not abstract philosophy. The idea that only the force can make life grow, shows the true evil of the empire, and shows the Jedi as victims later on. I considered this idea because it gives us a platform and meaning that is sorely lacking in the prequels. I would probably reshoot the whole thing :) never kill off Darth Maul, have Obi-Wan go to tatooine and actually leave the ship, etc. I like the qui gon dooku dynamic you suggest :) its cool.

@ brimforge: Yeah, I get what your saying about mixing 3 persona being over the top, I agree. It just seemed like a way to take what we were given and add some background, a suspenseful backdrop to seemingly purposeless plot points. The reason I thought Valorum would be good as Plagueis is his name. Finis Valorum (according to Wookiepedia) Lit. End of virtue, good name for a closet Sith lord. ;)It seemed a good way to give the prequels what the originals had, a back story. The backdrop for the original movies was the clone wars, the prequels had none.

@ bingowings" You're definitely right about the ridiculousness of the Jedi as the security force for all the various star systems, and its implied that each system has its own security (like Naboo). The thought process behind having Valorum be the Jedi sifo Dyas was that the republic could be like ancient Rome. Members of the praetorian Guard (imperial security) would often set up one of their own as a potential Caesar, or a regiment would declare their captain. The Jedi in this scenario would be like the guard preferring one of their own in power. Seciors had a great thing going in his TPM edit cutting all of the sidious scenes, there was much more of a phantom feel in that version. :) When I saw sith in theaters, it was like there was a train going by. Every car was where it had to be, but without anything substantial behind it.
