Well said. Mark Hamill’s performance was great, and all the imagery of Luke as a bitter recluse was really cool, but it never struck me as true to his character. People are so infatuated with the idea of prequel Jedi sucking that they forget we’re supposed to like the Jedi.

Everyone justifies hobo Luke by saying “he just hasn’t learned from the failure of the peetee jedi!!!”.

The PT Jedi protected the galaxy for like 10,000 years and were sitting on a millennium of peace. They failed because they BROKE their own rules (which were supposedly so flawed) and trained a creepy nine year old.

Most of you probably don’t even care for the PT, so that’s cool. But I keep hearing people talking about the Jedi Order like it was the worst thing ever, and its annoying.

Faster, more intense. -George Lucas

There’s nothing wrong with making things a little more intense than in earlier movies. TESB has some scenes that are more “intense” and dramatic than the action scenes from SW, like the Falcon nearly succeeding into letting three Star Destroyers to crash with each others or Luke’s rescue from the bottom of Cloud City. That may have been something amazing in 1980, but now it’s rather mundane compared with the crap you have in the prequels, for example. At some points things become too big, too epic and too dramatic, and these movies crossed my personal line a long time ago.

I sort of agree. I’ll watch a CGI “dense” movie like Avatar and enjoy it. Same with the Marvel movies and whatever else.
But there’s something about a movie that is slow-paced, and works on building a sense of wonder, instead of forcing it on you with spectacle.
I wouldn’t even argue that the OT fits the definition of that kind of movie. But because it flirted with those aspects, that’s why it has staying power, it least for me. Maybe others are different.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

Okay, I’ve finally exited the honeymoon phase from TLJ and am prepared to give my rankings. The last time I saw them is listed:

  1. A New Hope (2015)
  2. Return of the Jedi (2015)
  3. The Empire Strikes Back (2015)
  4. Rogue One (2017)
  5. The Phantom Menace (2014)
  6. The Force Awakens (2015)
  7. Revenge of the Sith (2014, 2018 fanedited)
  8. The Last Jedi (2017)

As far as AOTC goes, I disliked it so much that I wouldn’t even rewatch it. I last saw it 2013ish.

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

My rating for TLJ has now fallen to a 3/5 to a 2.5/5.
The only thing I liked in this movie was Rey and Kylo Ren. That was literally it.
I sort of dislike Rian Johnson’s style. He just seems like some egoist that thinks he needed to ‘bend genres’ and ‘break tropes’ and ‘be shocking and Avant-garde’ to prove how Nolanesque he is or something. Not someone who’s suited to make a blockbuster movie.
Every bad decision in this film is being defended as if the filmmakers were shackled to the story and the thing just wrote itself (“that’s what’s realistic”). Sorry, but as someone who’s a film major, that’s not how the force works.
I’m glad some of you got joy out of this movie, but if Luke can turn his back on his sister and friends, I can turn my back on Star Wars. Solo is probably the last one I’ll see, as I’m actually looking forward to that one.

EDIT: Apologies for originally saying I hate Rian Johnson 😉. Hating a director you don’t know is silly. His filmmaking just rubbed me wrong, personally.

The Cloak of Evil. (Clips available) (Part-Finished project)
Time

Here are my thoughts on the clips you’ve shared:
THE BRIDGE
-You’ve done this really well. Personally, I LOVE how this crawl has different music than the other one. Having the Star Wars theme playing in the middle of the movie feels unorthodox and like we just hit a reset button. This way, however, it just feels like a transition.

OBI-WAN TAKES A DRINK
-Basically Attack of the Clones, faster, more intense. Love it!

MIDI-CHLORIANS RE-IMAGINED
-I don’t remember TPM well enough to remember what’s changed, but it seemed good to me. I also love the voice-over sequence.

ANAKIN INTRODUCTION
-Pretty well done. I think some of the other posters are right about some of the transitions being too abrupt in this clip. However, you are on the right track with this faster pace.

EDIT: I also really liked Qui-Gon Jinn talking to Yoda, and am interested to see what else comes of that.

MY Thoughts on The Various Changes
Time

I think updating an old film’s sfx for new generations is a pretty awesome idea. Things like removing matte lines is awesome. Unfortunately, some of the changes are so bad they practically ruin it for me.

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE
-I can accept the wide shots of Mos Eisley, and other added stuff, but the things like the Dinosaur that walks in front of the speeder are so bad they actually ruin the entire movie for me.
-Basically, I’m fine with stuff that you wouldn’t notice. So I’m fine with them adding a CGI dinosaur in the background, but having one walk in front of the camera, or having CGI slapstick droids front and center, is dumb. It doesn’t improve the quality of the movie, it changes the way the movie is. I think that’s most people’s problems with the SE.
-CGI Jabba is horrible. And completely ruins Jabba. If you were seeing that scene for the first time, you’d think, “oh, Han Solo doesn’t need to worry about Jabba–he’s silly! He even let’s Han step on his tail!”
-Basically everything else is very well done. The Biggs scene was great.

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
-Continuity is overrated, IMO. But I guess it makes sense to put in Ian McDiarmind (spelling, sorry). But what was the point of changing the Emperor’s dialogue? The old lines were fine.
-Yoda looks too green. This is actually really distracting to me for some reason.
-“Prepare my shuttle”–just a dumb chance for Lucas to show us CGI-scapes.
-I’m fine with basically everything else.

RETURN OF THE JEDI
-Rancor scene stands out as the best change ever.
-I also like the Sarlaac’s beak. As a kid watching the '95 versions I didn’t think some hole in the ground was that scary.
-The new musical number is horrible. I would have just cut this scene entirely, I mean it’s not like the movie is short or anything.
-The whole CGI-scape celebration feels out of place in a movie that’s mostly filmed in a very real location (redwood forest) and makes the ST’s reversal of the happy ending make less sense (if you care about that).
-The new music is fine, though. While “Yub Nub” is also good, there was a weird emotional quality to having that melancholy William’s tune playing over a muted celebration. I know that sounds cheesy, but hey that’s how I felt.
-Again, Continuity is EXTREMELY overrated. Hayden Christensen was a decent Anakin in III (not in II though!) but he doesn’t belong in this movie. Having Anakin’s ghost be from years ago makes it seem like Ben Kenobi was right and Anakin really did “die” back in Episode III. Having an older Anakin, however, gives us a more powerful redemption message: now that he has ‘repented’, he looks the way he would have looked as if he had never done bad things.

THE PHANTOM MENACE
-The theatrical is much better than the extended version which was made for DVD and Blu-Ray. There’s no reason to make a long movie even longer with stuff that’s unnecessary.
-Was there any reason George couldn’t have toned down Jar Jar’s more embarrassing moments?

ATTACK OF THE CLONES
-Not really a great movie no matter what way you spin it, so this is one that actually could have benefitted from George’s tinkering. No one would have cared, because no one liked it.(at least in the time between it’s theatrical release and the DVD/VHS release)
-So they should have replaced many of the current love scenes, with the scenes where Anakin meets Padme’s family. Which aren’t superb scenes are anything, but they aren’t awkward and cringe-inducing.
-The scene where Obi-wan goes to the Jedi archives was much better than the Dex Jexter scene and contained the same info.
-Corny moments needed to be cut from the end.

REVENGE OF THE SITH & SEQEUL TRILOGY & ROGUE ONE
Some people really liked these and others really didn’t. Either way, there shouldn’t be changes to these, except for fx updates if Disney ever cared to do that.

2018 HAN SOLO

2020 OBI WAN MOVIE
EARLY 2020s: “NEW REPUBLIC” TV SHOW (ANIMATED), ON DISNEY XD
EARLY 2020S: LIVE ACTION TV SHOW, EXCLUSIVE ON DISNEY’S ANTI-NETFLIX STREAMING PLATFORM
LATE 2020S: RIAN JOHNSON TRILOGY
EARLY 2030S: SEQUEL SEQUEL TRILOGY

There’s no way it’ll be that long before Johnson’s trilogy comes out. It’s already been announced, meaning it’s probably in pre-production. I expect it it’ll take over the saga film’s role of being the big movies releasing every two years, with the spinoffs releasing during this trilogy’s off years.

Since this isn’t a saga trilogy, though, I really think not making it three parts would be nice. It would help it feel more unique. Might I suggest four parts? It could be the last SW before the franchise goes on hiatus, eventually leading to the…uh…Post-Sequel Trilogy? Second Sequel Trilogy? It’s just gonna be called the Fourth Trilogy isn’t it. sigh Anyways, Episode X would release around 2030.

I think my way is the better business plan, but what do I know? SW doesn’t have the story diversity that Marvel movies have. For better or worse all of them kind of have the same stuff, even more than Marvel. To drum up GA excitement they will need to starve people for a while (5 years minimum). For the uber-nerds who will never get tired of SW, they can make TV shows.
