Automated color grading and color matching with a Machine Learning Algorithm
Time

Dr. Dre… would you mind showing me how the blu ray would regrade with his style with this shot? This whole scene kills me trying to figure out saturation, gamma, everything about it… I would love to see how NeverarBot pulls it off. Don’t use this image BTW, this is just a reference to get the frame, I don’t have the blu ray handy… I think this is from my horrible attempt at adjusting Towne32’s 2.7.

‘My work here is done’ now has a new meaning 😉

An excellent start in any case. It will be interesting to see how it behaves with more material, especially since it will have to interpret skin tones seen under a variety of locations and lighting conditions. Heck, even I have trouble with that.

Is there any scene that you’ve found challenging? Would actually have some value to you then and all you have to do is show the frame you want predicted.

The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)

BWA HA HA HA!! Forgot about the effects of being on the South side of the equator! Stay warm. Or come visit us in the states. 😃

Good luck with your surgeries bro! A few years back I had my appendix and gall bladder removed 3 months apart. It can take a lot out of you. I enjoyed the jello and pudding though, eats lots of pudding for us. 😃

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

SUGGESTION

Film a 15 minute side story about two wampas that meet and fall in love and have children. But when the Rebel alliance lands on the planet, the ships accidentally cause ice fragments to impale and kill the little ones, and now we have a better understanding for the motive for them attacking Luke on the Taun-Taun and for why they always seem so angry.

Finally, when the last Rebel ship (the Falcon?) leaves Hoth… show the mom and dad, looking up at the sky with a single tear falling from their eye.

Another scene in progress. Just 7 or so minutes of footage left for this film.

(The second comparison is between my correction and Despecialized 2.5)

It looks amazing, but the walls for the frames I have of this scene and look slightly more green, while the lights and top off the walls are a bright teal/blue, and Tarkin’s costume olive green, not unlike the frame you regraded recently in the theatrical colors thread.

Here’s a not so great photo of the frames:

The Senator print photos are actually not far off for the conference room scene:

My new scanner arrived today, so hopefully I will be able to share the scans for this scene, and others soon…

OK, first off… looking at the difference between what’s in Dr. Dre’s hand and Neverargreat’s image… I see more of a cyan push than “green” vs. Neverargreat’s blue wall… I also THINK I see slightly less saturation in his face, but… hard to tell with a frame against blazing sunlight… either way… I like the idea that Neverargreat’s regrade will have more blue in these shots and ***** will have more green in them, and personally hopes he doesn’t change the shot.

To get from A to B with curves, I just have no idea how to do that. Any movement I put into boosting part of the green channel turns his hair green. GIMP has a cool feature though that can break up tint adjustments on a per color basis.

Does that look closer to what you have in your hand Dr. Dre?

"Or that you’re replacing the old ones with solid black bars throughout?"
This. 😃

"will it go to usenet?"
Not from my hands.

"I genuinely liked the green in the Falcon!"
DOH!! Really thought it was sarcasm for some reason. Believe me, it will still be there in certain scenes. Consistency just isn’t my strong suit. If this was the only known version of 35mm Empire, I’d be shipping the prores file to you for your next project!

UPDATE:

Thanks to Neverargreat’s nudging, I’ve desaturated the greens in several places. I need to render out a test video to make sure I didn’t destroy anything on Hoth, where I applied it pretty generally across most of reels 1 and 2, but… I now have the end credits fixed, and I’m now cropping out the black bars and very very slightly adjusted the aspect ratio of the film. I’ve also learned how to put ALL of Harmy’s audio tracks, and chapter breaks with the video, and the video is now being rendered out at “High” level, profile 4.1 for blu ray compliance.

It just doesn’t make sense to me to make an iso, but the mkv will be under 25gigs and you’ll be good to cook your own easily enough.

Bluray ISO format like the original Grindhouse would be marvellous!

Dreamster - you mentioned in your first post that you went back to the raw source: the “Prores” files. Out of interest, were these still red-faded, or had they already been colour-corrected to some extent by Team -1?

Bluto

They had the same corrections as was released in the original Grindhouse.

JawsTDS, I might take you up on your offer to beta test.

Actually, it appears to me that it will not be that simple to keep an audio track in sync, since there are a couple of differences with Despecialized 2.0. Remember Harmy had to delete one frame at the reel change near the end of the movie (between Vader falling down and Luke following him to a circle hatch opening) in order to keep Hairy_Hen’s audio in sync. Also, there was an extra frame in the beginning in DE 2.0 that required a +42 ms offset.

This release may fall out of sync by 1 frame here and there but overall it’s unnoticable. The audio track used for this release was the high rez stereo option from Harmy’s Despecialized.

Nice colors. I especially like the dark green in the Falcon cockpit.

One of the hardest parts about regrading the Grindhouse is knowing when to desaturate the blues, cyans, or greens. It’s weird when looking at Harmy’s Despecialized overlayed in the corner of the shots too (my GOUT sync/color sanity check process), because even though there was a lot of frame matching in the beginning, the frames rarely lined up 100% and it was almost as though the “flavor” of the original print was coming through. That’s umm… my story anyway and I’m sticking to it. In the single pass regrade I did, you can see the interior Vader ship just BLAZING with brilliant blue hues that are almost completely gray every other source I’ve seen. I desaturated that down quite a bit for this version but not completely. It just felt like the flavor was being lost somehow.
