Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!

I think you nailed it!  How does it look when applying to other scenes?

Also, can you repost the tool.  I went to download it but it is expired.  Thanks!

It looks oke, but the colors in the bluray are very inconsistent, so each shot definitely needs separate regrading.

I'm nearly done with v1.3 of the tool. It should be up by tomorrow, and will allow you to export a LUT for use in programs like Nuke and Resolve.

In my opinion the panels should be more beige, but the stormtroopers were no longer white, so here's a better regrade, where the stormtroopers are white, the panels are beige/mint, Darth Vader is black, the rebel troops have gray pants, and there's contrast, without too much blowout or artifacts:

Here's Harmy's for comparison:

and the other frame...

Finally got a chance to look at these on my calibrated Plasma TV. I see what you mean about the color artifacts.

Just to throw another wrench into the works, on that display I preferred Harmy's grading (the last pic in post 338). At least in terms of luma, his was hands down the best. I did slightly prefer your colors in the last one however, Dre!

I think this is the one for me. I boosted the contrast slightly, without introducing the color artifacts:

I let myself be guided by this reference:

338 makes me feel like I'm seeing projected in a theater, 340 not so much. I understand this is probably to minimize clipping, but 340 feels too neutral to me in terms of dynamic range, and is starting to remind me of the GOUT.

But if you and everyone else like 340 more, whatever. (Maybe it will look better in MPC at 0-255...)

Harmy's regrade made me realize that the increased saturation leads to a lot of color artifacts, where his and my own new regrade hardly have any.

Bluray matched to Senator screening:

I will update the video sample, based on this color correction model.

Here's a quick adjustment of the BD image I did in PS:

I'm now convinced both the Senetor pictures and the IB scans I used were pretty green shifted and this is probably the way I'd go if I did another version.

Since most seem to prefer the grading of post 283, I will use that grading for the video sample.

I will also prepare a video sample using Harmy's grading. Here's what frame 8228 looks like with this grading:

Depends on the goal at this point.  If it's to match the Senator, it's still a touch too green to my eyes.

But if it's to try to counteract some of the known color bias in the Technicolor prints, then it could be made even less green (you can still leave it with a touch of mint).  IMO for similar reasons you could restrain the clipping a bit more too, but I know that's my particular peeve.

The reason it looks more green, is because I reduced the luminosity to reduce the blownout colors, but since it is based on an exact match to the Senator, the colors should be accurate.

The problem is your troopers are also headed to beige, and Darth is browning up.

I'm not at my colourist panel, so this is a very dodgy example, but is closer to the look.

The top is your beige troopers and set, below is closer to how it looks.

I think this correction is a bit too desaturated. I would go with this one:

They actually do have a very slight mint tint, I've seen some of the panels in person, and although faint, it is there.

However the green skintones on the IB Techs are a result of the shitty state of the Technicolor facility by the mid 70s. The tech prints are great because they haven't faded, but the colour isn't quite right on them, it should be a little less green.

What do you think poita? Which is more accurate? Both have a hint of mint, but the first is definitely more green than the second. The second was used to make the video sample.

Not sure if it's my monitor or just my personal preference, but I really don't understand why did you remove the greens. Your changes make it look like a faded print and that's not a good thing IMHO

Well, because the evidence seems to show the greens should not be there. The Senator print, and photographic evidence show that for this sequence the panels are a beige color. According to piota, many Technicolor IB prints had an unintended green shift. The colors are what they are, but they're certainly not faded.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - 35 mm regrade (a WIP)
Time

Here's the video sample for the Raiders of the Lost Ark - 35 mm regrade (available until October 5th, 2015):

I think it looks pretty awesome, very film like. The  shot of Belloq laughing looks very descent, unlike the bluray and WOWOW, where it looks pretty bad, because the contrast was reduced revealing a lot of noise, and such. Anyway, enjoy!
