Anakin killing little Jedi kids is so cheap and stupid

Cheap? Yes. Stupid? No…if you’re going to kill all of the Jedi it’s reasonable to kill the kids too just in case one of them comes across a holocron. It’s called a contingency for God’s sake.

I find Anakin killing the children stupid, any clone could have shot the children, instead we’re shown the clones fighting older lightsaber-weilding Jedi, while Anakin goes to kill the baby Jedi. Not a great start for the “awesome” Darth Vader.

It’s a nonsense scene to get the “Anakin is evil” reaction. There’s really no reason for Anakin to start killing children at that point, and if it was done to prevent them becoming Jedi in the future, it should have happened off-screen in between episodes.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time
  1. Star Wars. Nothing beats the original, there’s a sense of innocence, amazement and just plain fun that I feel none of the other movies have. It’s such a simple basic story if you manage to forget all the baggage that comes with the sequels and prequels.

  2. The Empire Strikes Back. May be the best one. It was such a clever and bold move to make something so different from the first movie when it was so easy to just repeat the formula (As the Force Awakens proves). Probably the most interesting one in terms of characters.

  3. Return Of The Jedi. Without a doubt the weakest of the original trilogy, but my favorite for many years, it was the first movie I ever watched. Lucas often claims that Star Wars movies are for children to defend the awful prequels, while I don’t think that argument works for the prequels (and it’s not true anyway), Return Of The Jedi is a wonderful movie for kids, it had everything, huge monsters, tons of new spaceships, the ewoks, jabba, and I loved it all. (And yes, I loved the ewok scenes, like when they’re going to cook our heroes, when I was a child). Luke’s story keeps me entertained as an adult.

  4. The Force Awakens. A very entertaining movie but I feel it’s too reliant on the OT (and basically a remake of Star Wars) to be considered any higher. It’s also too soon and we have to see how it holds up once the “OMG it’s the falcon!!!” nostalgia wears off. Still, I really enjoyed the new characters, they stand well with the classic ones and that bodes well for the future.

Way, way below are the prequels:

  1. The Phantom Menace. Universally regarded as the worst one, I think it’s actually the least awful prequel. At least they used some locations and sets so it still looks like a movie. It has a few nice moments and I quite like some of the designs and the score, but the problems are evident right from the beginning (boring characters, boring plot, no stakes, OT contradictions, terrible story decisions, bad direction, editing, etc.)

  2. Revenge Of The Sith. Why so many people consider this a good movie (or better than ROTJ) is really baffling to me. There’s really not a lot of difference with Clones, but I guess the (merciful) lack of love scenes puts Sith ahead. People like it cause it’s dark, but it’s so forced and nonsensical (Anakin killing little Jedi kids is so cheap and stupid) and the whole resolution so rushed, it really shows how wasted Episodes I and II really were.

  3. Attack Of The Clones. What a mess this is: boring characters, awful choices, the love plot doesn’t make any sense, the clone army plot doesn’t make any sense, the assassination plot doesn’t make any sense, terrible performances and it looks like a videogame.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Saw it yesterday for the second time, now in IMAX 3D and I still enjoyed it a lot, though the movie does have its problems. Some assorted thoughts after a second viewing:

  • It’s interesting that it would seem they didn’t try to put as many things to turn into toys as they could in a movie that exists solely to restart a billion dollar business (enjoyable as the movie is). The Resistance only uses x-wings and that other ship where Leia arrives, the First order only uses Ties, the transports and Ren’s shuttle.

  • Anyone else noticed how many times they say “Han Solo” in the movie? When the Falcon arrives at Starkiller base, Ren says “Han Solo”, when they meet at the bridge, again “Han Solo”, when the saber duel is about to begin “Han Solo can no longer protect you”. Even 3PO calls him “Han Solo”. It’s as if Vader had said “Obi Wan Kenobi has taught you well” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi can no longer help him” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi never told you what happened to your father”. I found it strange.

  • The cgi characters don’t work, specially Snoke, I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t be practical effects

  • While it’s a shame we didn’t get another scene with Han, Luke and Leia together, watching Carrie Fisher again, I don’t think she could handle a bigger role.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

So, went to the midnight screening yesterday here in Mexico and I really, really enjoyed it, had a lot of fun.

I think it will probably, like the prequels, split the fan base (maybe a bit less than the prequels), since it is very close to a remake of Star Wars, with quite a bit of Empire too, and I can see why that’ll bother people, and the Starkiller is kinda dumb.

For me though, while it rehashes a lot of scenes from Star Wars (the cantina bit being the worst and most unneeded offender), it wasn’t such a big deal. I felt this movie was more about the characters than the story. One of my biggest problems with the prequels is not so much the cgi or jar-jar, but that the characters are awful, Qui-Gon is boring, Obi-Wan is boring, Padme is… well I don’t know if there’s an english word for beyond boring and Anakin is a very unlikeable character. On TFA I found the characters quite interesting, fun and with emotions, you can see their friendship ( they don’t have to tell you they’re friends)

It’s a movie with heart and humor and I loved it, and I guess I’m a sucker for nostalgia, which this movie has tons. I loved when Rey and Finn are running and Finn asks about “that ship” and Rey says it’s garbage, the ship of course turns out to be the Falcon.

I also have to say I was pleasantly surprised by Harrison Ford, this is not old, bored Ford, it’s Han Solo from Star Wars and Empire. It is a shame though, we’ll never see Luke, Han and Leia together on screen again, the ewok celebration will forever remain the last time we see them together.

Help Wanted: Looking for people who speak German, French, Spanish, or Brazilian Portuguese
Time

It works, although right out of the box it doesn't show the lenght of each line which is important, I'll mess with it later to see if it's an option or something.

After a quick look at Star Wars, it seems the subtitles are from Spain, so some parts sound a bit off to me. For example, in Mexico we call computers "computadoras" but in Spain they call them "ordenadores", the subtitles use "ordenadores" so I'll probably change that.

A curious thing about spanish is that we have two different forms of the second person in singular "You", we use "Usted" which implies more respect or that you're talking to a superior or even for a not very close relationship and "Tú" which is more friendly or among equals. It is interesting that in these subtitles Vader uses "Tú" when talking to Tarkin, but I'm pretty sure in a dubbed version I once watched Vader used "Usted" when talking to Tarkin. Leia also used "Usted" when talking to Han. So I'll have to think about what's more appropiate between different characters.

Feeling very down about the current state of Star Wars
Time
I don't know about the "current" part, things have been the same for OOT fans for a looooooong time. I mean, I've said it before but I'm surprised at the "anger" and "depression" (if you can call it that) over the blu-rays. What did people expect? He fricking put Hayden's head on Anakin's body last time. Yes it sucks, but we knew this was coming. Actually it seems this time it was rather mild compared to other revisions, we only got the NOOOO!!!, Obi's "Little Richard getting his balls burned" impression, blinking ewoks, some rocks and Sebulba.

If the SE & BR versions were never rereleased...
Time
I wouldn't care about them but I'm sure someone would, especially the SE, I don't know about the BR, it seems quite a few people think he crossed a line with the BR. A lot of people don't mind some of the changes, probably the "universally" hated changes are Greedo shooting, Jedi Rocks, Hayden's ghost and now the NOOOOOO!!!!! Other very objectable changes would be Mos Eisley with its cartoon dinasours and the shuttle scene in Empire, but I don't think everyone hates them.

Why do you think he does it?
Time

I don't think there's a single reason. The changes are different in its intentions.

For some, like putting Hayden as Anakin in ROTJ, it's obviously to connect the two trilogies. In an ideal world, he would have made the prequels more like the OT, but he didn't, and know to try to connect them he puts prequel shit in the OT. If you watch ROTS and Star Wars back to back you can see they really don't work at all, Lucas probably notices this and adds more and more crap. Also he probably thinks the prequels were good movies and sees nothing wrong with adding more stuff from them.

The NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! in Jedi was probably Lucas feeling pretentious (like when he goes on and on about themes and myths instead of telling the truth that he started with the intention of basically making a comic book movie) and he came up with more "poetry" and "rhymes" and "mirrors. Whatever.

And seriously I wouldn't be surprised if some stuff like the rocks covering R2 is some jerk who works at Lucasfilm who says "You know George, it's very stupid that the Sandpeople don't notice R2, we should cover him with rocks! I can make it in an hour". And Lucas, who judging by the awful color timing he approved, doesn't care anymore and just goes "OK". It doesn't matter to him anymore that R2 couldn't get in and out of those rocks, just like when he was presented the design for the Jedi fighter and R2 could fit in there with a little bit of cheating. He doesn't care and has surrounded himself with a lot of idiots.

Who knows, maybe Lucas actually restrains some of the "computer people" at Lucasfilm, perhaps someone has already suggested to replace Yoda with CGI, only to be hold off by Lucas.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time
From what I've seen, TPM looks fantastic, Star Wars looks about the same as the DVD (well a bit better since it's a blu ray) although I'd say the blacks might be even worse. Jedi looks awful, I don't know if anyone has mentioned (this topic has become too long to keep track of everything) but there's a part in Endor that looks particularly bad, like it's blurry or something.

The blu rays are already being sold here in Mexico, a friend of mine bought it. After watching the deleted scenes and parts of Star Wars and Jedi, I can say that the set really blows.

For those planning to buy the set just for the deleted scenes, you should reconsider, it's really not worth it. Check them out on youtube first or something. My feeling is that most will be dissapointed by the deleted scenes.

Also, Wicket's eyes are truly terrifying.

I can't help but think they are still holding some deleted scenes back. Unless there are easter eggs yet to be found...

Well, the only ones I can think that are not included are on the BR set:

From Star Wars I believe there's some more footage of Luke, Han, Chewie and the princess wandering around the Death Star. Of course you could say that the whole Lost Cut is an alternate scene.

From Empire there's 3PO and R2 discussing the Wampas (not included in the Wampa deleted scenes on this set). There's also Lando rescuing Luke.

From Jedi, there must be some extra footage from the Rancor (the musical cue on the CD is longer than the film).

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

It's a common practice in Mexico, there's a really just one chain of stores that sells CDs, DVDs and Blu Rays (although stores like Wal Mart and the like also have a smaller selection) called Mixup which is in pretty much every mexican mall.

Anyway Mixup stores put  stuff out whenever they get it, last month they had some Superman Blu rays that were supposed to come out a week later, and there are tons of examples like that. I went to two different Mixup stores and both had it, several copies and actually one had Episode I playing. The official release is the 14th I think. I guess they don't care since they're a monopoly, and the stores are owned by the richest man in the world (Carlos Slim).

If GL changed his mind about releasing OUT, but with a few tweaks.....
Time
I would buy that and probably be happy with it. But it's not acceptable, people will always have different opinions about what is an acceptable change and what is not. Is the redone Rancor in Jedi acceptable, for me it is, for others probably not, the blue R2 in all the X-wing shots? I don't like it, I like the original black R2 even if it's "wrong" but some people do like that change. Just release the original as it is and be done with it.

Let's all say something nice about George Lucas. No insults allowed.
Time
I've always thought that if Episode I had been better received critically, II and III would have been very different, I really get the feeling that whatever he had planned changed after Episode I. Would they be better movies? I don't know, but at least on Episode I he tried some new things and some new designs. It's like he said "Oh, they didn't like it, whatever, let's just put Boba Fett, Stormtroopers, Star Destroyers, asteroid fields, ships that look like X-Wings, walkers, speeder bikes, ships that look like TIEs and the Emperor's Throne Room from Jedi in the next two movies". And I do think that Episode I, as bad as some parts are, is by far the best of the prequels. Probably because he shot it at locations and real sets for the most part.

Someone hold me back from jumping out a window.  I dare you to check out the official SW Facebook page.  Here's one post:

Why are some of you guys mad about the original trilogy being editted? I mean, it's not like they were so awesome or anything... I personally prefer the new trilogy, since they're newer and have more action in them, and i'd like the originals to be reeditted and made just as awesome. I've watched the uneditted versions of the originals, and frankly i didn't like them at all, but maybe that's cuz my generation don't like movies that were made in the 70s.

They're not joking. -_-

Yeah, the prequels are awesome, and it's not like all that awesome action in the prequels, like a chase in an asteroid field, Obi-Wan cutting someone's arm at a bar, the star destroyers, the set were Dooku is holding Palpatine in ROTS, the speeder bikes, etc, were all ripped off the OT... Oh... wait...

On another subject, I'm kinda amused by the reaction to the blu-rays, while the NOOOOOOOO!!! is indeed a horrible change and ruins the scene (and I swear it has to be George giving us the finger, why else would he add the most ridiculised moment of the prequels?), the movie was ruined long ago, it's no worse than Hayden's ghost. Or Boba's voice in Empire. It's strange that for some reason this is the last straw for some people.

I did not plan to buy the blu-ray set before I knew of rocky R2, blinking Wicket and yelling Vader. Not sure why anyone can be surprised the movies have been ruined some more. As I said in another post I'm surprised there aren't more changes and also a bit surprised at what he did change.
