Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread
Time

They really mined the early concepts for the OT in this movie. For example, Chirrut being connected to the Whills and saying “May the Force of Others be with you” as in the first draft of Star Wars. I had no idea we’d be seeing Vader’s lava castle from the first draft of TESB either.

Also, is it just me or did the melody for Jyn’s theme remind anyone else of the Star Crash main title?

Wow, these are pretty awesome.

(That Marvel adaptation must have been a pretty big deal back in the day. It’s interesting that they reprinted the American comics. I was under the impression that the Japanese preferred to make their own version of American characters when it came to comics/manga?)

Also I wasn’t aware that Ohrai had done more than just the ESB poster.

In Japan there have been both manga-style reinterpretations as well as just straight forward translations of American comics. For example in the '70s Kobunsha published Japanese translations of several Marvel comics as trade paperbacks including Thor, The Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man, and I know that nowadays a lot of Marvel and DC’s trade paperbacks of recent storylines get Japanese translated editions (for example Civil War).

In the '90s there were some manga adaptations of the Star Wars trilogy, which were later released in the US in English, but the first Star Wars comic in Japan was actually the Marvel one. They didn’t even flip the pages! When you get to the part of the magazine with the Star Wars comic you have to jump forward several pages to get to the beginning of the story, and then start reading left-to-right instead of the usual Japanese right-to-left.

The Marvel adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back was also released in Japan, in book form, although I don’t know if it was serialized in a magazine like Star Wars was:

A Japanese translation of the Marvel adaptation of Star Wars was serialized in a few issues of Shonen Magazine in 1978, and in the first issue (1978 #18) they included some original artwork.

A spread featuring most of the main characters, along with “Jabba” from the Marvel comic and Garindan, who’s named “Goggles” in this magazine:

A painting of Ben and Vader (captioned “Duel to the Death between Good and Evil!”) by Noriyoshi Ohrai, who also did some other famous Star Wars promo images in Japan:

Some pointless issues:

Why after the opening crawl, and panning down to Jakku in the background, WHY do the troop transports fly towards the CAMERA, i.e. IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION

I remember the planet in the opening shot looking blueish. Was it actually Jakku? (I can’t remember what Jakku looked like when the Falcon flew away from it)

Have you noticed any differences in various screenings of TFA? [SPOILERS!]

1st viewing: During Rey’s vision, I heard what sounded like Luke screaming (either “Noooo!” from ESB in the Vader confrontation, or him screaming in pain as the Emperor tortures him with lightning in ROTJ. Can’t remember which).

2nd and 3rd viewing: When this scene came on, I was specifically listening for Luke again, but could not hear him.

You can hear Luke yelling “No! No!” from Empire as Rey ends up in the Knights of Ren flashback after the Cloud City hallway crumbles apart.

It was by far the weakest and confused as Rey had her own theme and Luke’s, it’s been said that JJ interfered with JW’s magic making and tbh a lot of it doesn’t appear to be his work?

If you’re talking about the use of “Burning Homestead,” that’s not Luke’s theme. Luke’s motif is actually the same as the opening crawl. If you watch ANH, you’ll notice this theme plays when Luke first appears (when Beru yells “Luke! Luke!”), when Luke gets up from the table and leaves (Beru says “he has too much of his father in him”), the shot of Luke walking inside the Lars homestead right after Binary sunset, when Luke is shooting at the Stormtroopers on the Death Star (Wilhelm scream) and gets out his grappling hook, and when Luke is the last one left in the Death Star trench after Wedge leaves (switching on his targeting computer).

Burning Homestead and Binary Sunset use the Force’s motif, which can also be heard when Ben first explains to Luke about the Force (“Vader was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force.” “The Force?”), when Ben gets that look on his face when he decides to sacrifice himself, and when his voice tells Luke to “use the Force” during the trench run, before switching to Luke’s motif when he switches off the targeting computer.

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)
Time

I have the previous version so I don’t know if this has been fixed in version 9.0. You said you fixed a typo in the Japanese subs for Star Wars, but there’s two I noticed.

At (0:28:27), it says バンさ when it should say バンサ (Bantha). At (1:53:26) it says です・スター (is Star) when it should say デス・スター (Death Star).

An OT “junky” who referred to Obi’s hut as a cave? Interesting.

It is never named in the film. So for a purist cave, hut or house is all the same. I actually like cave. It is kinda romantic. 😃

In the film…

Regardless of whether or not it’s named within the film, in both the OUT and the SE it’s clearly an artificial structure, not a cave.

Ffs the cave comment was beacuse the inside resembles a cave, not because he lives in one.

My post was in response to imperialscum. Calm down.

Digitally change the lightsaber to make it Luke’s Lightsaber. The green one.

Why? Ren wants the saber because it was originally Vader’s. If it was Luke’s saber from Jedi why would he want it at all?

 1. The crawl also was a bit too “personal” with the use of “Luke” and “Leia” so frequently.

-ORIGINAL:
Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

With the support of the REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE. She is desperate to find her brother Luke and gain his help in restoring peace and justice to the galaxy.

Leia has sent her most daring pilot on a secret mission to Jakku, where an old ally has discovered a clue to Luke’s whereabouts….

-MY SUGGESTION:

Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last of the fabled Jedi Knights, has been destroyed. Fear once again grips the galaxy.

To combat the growing threat, the NEW REPUBLIC has enlisted the help of Skywalker’s twin, General Leia Organa, to lead a brave new RESISTANCE. In a desperate attempt to find her brother and gain his help in the conflict, General Organa has dispatched her most daring pilot on a secret mission to the desert planet of Jakku. There, an old ally waits, claiming to have at last discovered the key to finding Luke, and with him the salvation of them all…

I agree with substituting the names, but I don’t think the sentences need to be changed that much. They don’t have to be longer to be better. I also think the crawl should stay as three paragraphs because they’re timed to the music.

Harrison’s lines were chopped up in a way that didn’t quite have impact or make sense.

I think it’s because the trailer was edited with the Japanese subtitles in mind, rather than the dialog from the audio. To a Japanese audience, Han’s line is “The Force is real. It’s all real.” instead of “The Force. It’s true. All of it.”

VHS Preservation - How to Get Best Quality?

Moth3r said:

Start with your deck.

Best results can be obtained from a decent S-VHS player. JVC and Panasonic are the most reputable, with the Panasonic AG-1980P being a particular favourite.

What's your budget?

Thanks for the link.

I don't really have a budget. Just whatever I can afford at the moment. There's no rush, so I'll just have to accumulate the equipment and such over time. It's worth the wait if it's for a better end product.

I checked amazon for JVC Super VHS players, but all I could find were the crap ones (3900 and 5900) and the "pro" ones that are super expensive (around $2000).

What kind of TBC do you recommend?
