Okay, this has been bugging me for a while. A Hong Kong film about a ‘renegade’ Hong Kong cop, on the trail of either a drug lord or a gang lord. He’s about to catch him when the bad guy goes over the border to China. This requires the cop to go over and abide by the rules of the mainland. He is partnered with a Chinese cop who does things ‘by the book’. All I remember is a scene of the cop sleeping over night in the station, on one of those uncomfortable looking benches, and it was made in the 90’s.

Sounds like Supercop with Jackie Chan. The original HK title is Police Story 3.

No. Although, watching the trailer has reminded me (er… don’t know how) that the lead wore a leather jacket, I think he also had a goatee. Also, the movie was played as part of a Hong Kong movie season which featured the Police Story movies. I believe Supercop had it’s British T.V. debut during the same season.

Definitely Independence Day. Not 'cause it’ll be good, in fact I’m hoping it sucks as much as the first one. Jeff looks to be fully Goldblumming, and young Will Smith is looking and sounding ‘fresh’. Also the President is back, as is Data, even though he died in the first one. The more I think about it, the more I think I’m gonna like it. Devlin and Emmerich for the win!

We follow standard imperial procedure for infiltrating potentially hostile planets.

  1. First we send in the real nerds, the Forlorn hope, in a scouting mission.
  2. If they do not come back, we can assume they all fell asleep and the movie is awful
  3. If they do come back, we read and listen to their reports.
  4. If it is good, we go in full force.
  5. If it is bad, we spend the next twenty years sniping at George Lucas and J.J. Abrams from the rooftops and the forums.

I’d rather nuke first and ask questions later.

I think that decision is Corporal Hicks’. Since, you know, this is a Military operation.

Oooh, speeder with no aliasing on the sides. I have to say, very impressive work here guys. I have never seen the Pal stuff look that good. Question; when you go for a release, would it be possible to preserve the 'full experience,' with logos and trailers at the beginning of each capture? I wish to create a custom set, and these would be very handy.

buffy's hd airing looks terrible
Time

As far as I'm concerned, the HD presentation of Buffy is appalling. Extras, boom mikes, unused props leaking into the edges. Even worse, there are some iconic shots you can never reframe to the broadcast version, because they've zoomed and cropped and the information isn't there any more. But who lets shots past that have been framed with members of the crew in them? Serious, the people responsible have to be complete idiots. It's the only explanation I can think of.

Yeah, still don't see it, though. I agree that on face value he's a jobbing director and really hasn't done anything effects heavy that would cry out Star Trek director, but that argument could be applied to Nicholas Meyer. Thing is, looking at his resume, and knowing that his best stuff is workshopped with the actors to find character in a scene, fills me with more hope than if, say, Michael Bay were announced as sitting in the chair. It might turn out that he really is just another director for hire, and does exactly what the studio heads want and then screws it up. Likewise, he might just pull a rabbit out of the hat and make the bestest thing ever. I just think he's being judged on aspects of his career which don't matter.

Erm, Lin's not actually just an action director, you know? After Tokyo Drift, I honestly didn't think I'd ever feel the need to defend him, but he is exceptionally good at his job when on form. Modern Warfare, Interpretive Dance and Introduction To Statistics are three of the finest things I have ever seen. Sure, one of those is based on action conventions, but still. The other two most definately are not. I agree with Silverwook, bit off beat, but interesting, and I think he could do alright.

And since when was the director so important? I remember a time when all that mattered was that Kirk was in it with his crew. And then Picard with his crew. And they were doing cool things. IN SPACE! (Athough in reality, Picard and his crew never really showed up. Just some angry old man with some familiar looking guys that did stuff for him).

The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Yeah, I thought it was good. This is the first year i've allowed myself to see spoilers for the MCU, so the ending wasn't much of a surprise. I kind of robbed myself of that, but think it was a double edged sword anyway. I've never read the comic books they're basing this stuff on, and even having read about it, i'm still unsure the exact implications of it all. Basically, the ending meant nothing to me. Loved everything else though, especially 'The Doctor'.

Ooooh, I've never heard of these Cannes scenes of which you speak (and I thought I already knew too much about this film. More research needed). And I would love, love, love to be able to get a remastered US cut. Honestly, I think your previous releases of this movie are excellent, and watch each one several times per year. In fact, scarily, I'd wager I've now seen the sequel more than the first one.
