Info Wanted: anyone done 'The Donny and Marie Show' Star Wars skit...
Time
i've seen the version on Rarities 1, and I think I have a VHS version that beats it out..."think" being the operative word as it's been a while since I watched it on VHS. (I did inflict the Rarities 1 version on a big group of fans this summer during a full saga marathon... )

I'd be happy to send the VHS to a "regular" if they want to take a look at it and see if it's worth another transfer. I actually have a couple things I think might make up a good "random rarities" disc that I haven't seen circulate too much...the tape with the Donnie/Marie special has a talk show clip that I've never seen anywhere (or at least I don't think I have) from some random American daytime talk show around ESB. i also have a few MSNBC specials from around the prequel era that I haven't seen make the rounds...I think they're Headliners & Legends.

anyway, i'd love to see if this stuff is worth circulating, so PM me if you're not an untrustworthy vagabond and would like to check out the tapes. I can mail them to you but of course would love to get them back!

Lucas's filmmaking rut
Time
i actually think the multitude of ship designs is one of the big underdiscussed flaws of the prequels. in the OT, there were X wings and Tie fighters. obviously there were also A wings, B wings, Y wings, etc...but you could look at a battle and tell whose ships were whose. color probably also played a part in that--the ties were dark blue/black, dark colors, and the rebel ships were all light colored for the most part.

in the prequels, i could not tell you for the life of me the name of any ship on either side. maybe a jedi starfighter i could recognize. otherwise, it's a crapshoot. i can kinda tell the good guys from teh bad, but certainly not in a massive space battle like the one in ROTS. in contrast, i could freeze frame any shot in teh ROTJ battle and tell you the ship name and faction.

the space battles would be so much better if there were only a few ship designs per side that remained mostly consistent throughout the prequels with only occasional and slight additions/changes. an x-wing was still an x-wing in all 3 OT films; the jedi have had, what, at least two different ships?

Might start a real life Star Wars club in PA.
Time
back when I lived in chicago, i helped found and was president of Chicago Force, our local SW fan club.

i have to say, doing SW fandom has been nothing but a rewarding blast for me. i've loved every minute. even as a prequel hater, i've made so many great friends and had so many fun conversations.

i'd definitely recommend starting with your area's board at FanForce, as none suggested--there may already be something going on you can participate in, or maybe get involved in planning and helping with events.

have fun and good luck!

Editing Episode II: Is there a great film there?
Time
i am with those who wonder if AOTC is truly fixable at all...i have the magfan edit but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. His BotF edit of TPM made that film much more watchable for me, although it's hard to polish a turd enough to make it truly good.

for me, AOTC is two movies. others have mentioned the groanworthy love story sequences, and I think they suck hardcore. yet there's also this interesting little mystery flick where Obi-Wan becomes an intergalactic gumshoe to track down the mystery of the dart and the Kaminoans and the clones.

what fails miserably is that this mystery is pissed away by a) Yoda basically shrugging and flying off to Kamino to pick up an army THAT THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO ORDERED IT OR WHY, and b) absolutely NO follow-up on who deleted the planet from the Jedi Archives and who Sifo-Dyas was.

(and I get that the info may be in the books, and maybe we're supposed to assume Dooku or Sidious was behind it--but SPELL IT OUT, GEORGE. we're the audience. there are things we like to know, such as the particulars of a freaking story we've paid ten dollars to watch.)

my edit would cut the love story down to the bone and use whatever means possible to expand the mystery stuff--i know AOTC was the only prequel with a co-writer, and my honest theory (supported by nothing but my brain) is that Lucas penned the love sequences, told Jonathan Hales to leave them alone, and Hales largely penned (or at least, heavily influenced) the Obi-Wan sequences. cause to me, it's like two different movies.

but yeah--cutting the pauses, the stiltedness of the whole affair, the wasteful sweeping establishing shots and transitions would help a ton too.

***The "Darth Editous" Episode IV DVD Info and Feedback Thread*** - a partially "de-specialed" DVD
Time
quick update--DarkJedi was already hooked up so I'll be sending copies to:

bwlag
Cyberdave
Yanksno1
ntrprs

it may be a week to 10 days before the copies get out the door--i have family in town and won't have much burning time.

i've offered to send them discs free of charge if they'll pay forward to other OT.com members--i assume this is how paying forward works. so hopefully anyone else who needs a copy will hear from these folks soon via PM or this thread.

Info & Help: looking for... other ld-rips to dvd movies ex. blade runner int cut, songs of the south, frighteners dir cut - and much much more...
Time
that stinks elias.

should we rally the troops and try to get a transfer project together along the lines of the Frighteners project? we can take a collection via paypal, "donate" a fee to some brave & kind soul willing to do the transfer on their snazzy LD player, and then get menus and all that crap.

say the word...i'm definitely in for some scratch on this one regardless.

Could live action SW TV show look like BSG??
Time
honestly, being an absolute novice when it comes to filming technology, the one thing i DO trust Lucas pretty implicitly on is the tech end of things. so if he says he's got a way to shoot a weekly TV series that looks and feels great visually on a camcorder, more power to him.

and NOTHING could ruin star wars for me. i've got my OOT dvds, i'm good to go until they pry them from my cold, dead hands.

Help Wanted: Project To Collect All Star Wars Documentaries
Time
i THINK I can help with the NBC doc--that sounds like Time and Again, a series that used to be on MSNBC where they'd take old clips from the NBC archives and string them together around topical releases.

I'm guessing that's from the TPM-era because I think I have it on tape too. i'll try to look through my archives tonight and see if I can't get more precise details.

What do you use to master your DVD's?
Time
i "acquired" DVD Lab Pro a few weekends ago to play with and decided to test it by making some DVDs of crappy Star Trek: The Animated Series avi files. (not good quality for TV viewing by any means, but watchable, and keeps me from sitting in my uncomfy computer chair too long.)

it was SO damn easy to use--had a custom static menu with music in no time. nothing fancy but absolutely customizable and fun.

so for this technologically-retarded user, a big thumbs up for DVD Lab Pro.

Star Wars TV Update
Time
naw, i hear ya, i hear ya. loud and clear. i get more excited about what could happen than about what I know will happen, which is your ultimate point, that it probably can't help but be something that hurts star wars more than it helps it.

i'm in favor of ending the canon now too; hell, i wish they'd never written a word of the EU, even though I've read plenty of it. to me, star wars is modern myth, and if you add stories about random folk to expand the "universe," you just reduce the scope of the central story. it was never meant to be an ongoing episodic story; it was just the one story (well, now the two stories). unlike star trek, which IS episodic, and so reading a bazillion books makes sense.

at least we don't have to watch it if we don't want to...though i probably wil, at least once, just to make sure it's as bad as I suspect it will be.

Star Wars TV Update
Time
i get what you're saying, gaffer, but I don't necessarily agree. to me, it's all about the quality of the work and the sense in which lucas or whoever or lucas AND whoever are able to capture the spirit of star wars on a weekly basis.

think about it: star wars was originally envisioned as part movie serial. what current entertainment format imitates the serial format more than any other? a weekly TV series.

it'll never happen, mark my words, but if they can capture that serial feel--the adventure and swashbuckle and sexy excitement of the best Star Wars--every week, i don't care who stars in it, or whose story they tell. to me, star wars is as much about how the story is told as it is about the story itself--something lucas never seemed to understand on the prequels.

Star Wars TV Update
Time
the best thing lucas could do with the TV show would be to act as an exec producer along with an incredibly talented and excited show runner/exec producer witih loads of experience. i personally would be partial to any buffy/angel vet as i think those shows set the new standard for immersive, emotional, funny, exciting genre TV, but I'm told the new battlestar kicks mucho ass, so i bet that show will spawn some really talented sci-fi TV people.

hell, what abour ron moore himself? that'd be rocking.

anyway, it'll never happen. but that's my dream. and hey--there has been a fair amount of conflicting info out there about the series so maybe lucas will go this route or something similar. it's not that i don't think he should be involved at all--i just don't think he should be the only one in charge.

So, not meaning to reply to my own post like this, but any new updates on the Godfather set?

My apologies folks. I have the set, just bought a new MiniDV camera, and am in the process of testing the quality difference between transferring LD to MiniDV, and LD to DVD-VR. I just have had NO time whatsoever. Damn pregnant wives can be sooo needy....... j/k

I'll keep in touch better.

no worries pal--thanks so much for doing this! i can't wait to check this out...nor can I wait to see how much my own computer fun time is reduced when my wife becomes preggers.
