Oiy mates.... Just because I appreciate the attention to detail from the people on this thread, I was hoping I could get some feedback on a quick scene I'm reworking for AOTC. I've been an editor for about 3 hours now, since I just figured out how to get the files loaded and whatnot. This is my first time ever using "real" editing software and I'd appreciate you guys telling me what you think. Believe me, you'll enjoy it. Especially if you actually want Dooku not to seem like a lame ass.

Just the way the original voice says "dead" is so much more menacing.  I like the mix a lot but I'd bring more of that one word "dead", of the original voice, up in the mix more.  I think that would satisfy almost everyone.  Kiwi accent or not, Morrison had 4 lines to nail and he screwed up every one of them.  Not his fault of course.  Morrison is an excellent actor.  Even bad actors can look and sound good with a proper filmmaker at the helm.  This was the result of people just not caring.

To add to GoodMuscian and my post.....  isn't dack a gunner?  Well dammit... let's see him gun it a little.  I mean granted, he had no approach vector and he wasn't set (whatever the hell that shit means) but maybe just a few pop shots.  Apparently Janson's was all set, so let's see him blasting the hell out of some AT-ST's.  Just because, well, you know Ady, because you are a wizard and can pull all this shit out of your arse.

Actually, I looked better and his face is just as bloody in both shots but its a slightly different angle of his face so scratch that one.

HELP..... I need a little help. I just bought Adobe Premiere Pro this week and I can't get any video to load properly except the .wmv files that goodmuscian posted. I'd like to put together a couple of clips to share but I can't figure out how to rip my DVD (already decrypted and reburned) into a file that Premiere Pro will recognize. Its killing me because I'm dying to edit a few things and can't. Ironically, I'm majoring in video editing in school but I've never taken an editing class yet (gggrrrrrr) and we're on break so I have no one to ask. I know there are a few blessed souls that would help a brother on here. Any help here would be hot....

EDIT: Okay, I've finally figured out that I have to convert to AVI type 2 and then it took forever to find a converter that didn't have problems (we're talking like 3 days here people). But first, I need to know how to get it off my disk, onto my harddrive so I can then put it through the converter.

YEA!!!!! I can post again!!! It's been days.

My two cents on more walkers is what I said earlier about seeing more of the Imperials around Cloud City. MORE!!!!! More More More! The Empire is the ruling military of the ENTIRE galaxy. They bring the Death Star to handle therebel base before and this time they bring what????..... a few walkers that only shoot in one direction and go slower than my grandmother on a Sunday drive???? I think not. Remember people, this isn't just a preservation effort here. This is to give it a little more bang for our buck. Look at what was done in ANH:R to the Death Star battle. That was amped up to the Nth degree and we all wet ourselves like little preschoolers when we first saw it.

Oh, speaking of the walkers Ady, please for the love of all that is holy, make lasers come out of the walkers from all around it. Think of how stupid the strategy is to fly directly at the walkers from the front, if that is where their only weapons are. I've seen the folly in this strategy since I was 8 years old. Its just plain dumb. Plus, those guns shoot so damn slow that it would be nearly impossible to actually hit a speeder going at those speeds. The whole scene has wonderfully intense and exciting music but where is the excitement on screen? "That armor's too strong for blasters." "Wow Luke, really? Luckily there are tow cables on board because otherwise these walkers are the most unstoppable things around....... unless we sneak up behind them and 'cow tip' them". Admit it.... you've thought it sounded like a cow being tipped too when it fell over.

Its all good to point out things that even us rabid diehard fans who've seen the film probably hundreds of times have missed, but if the glaringly obvious things aren't addressed then don't we run the risk of doing just another special edition? We all know that tons of things were fixed and enhanced in 1997 and 2004 but we never had the film perfected. Little and big things alike were messed up or neglected. I've noticed dozens of things in these films that need fixing but I never mentioned them because I keep dwelling on things like the Hoth battle and whatnot. There were little bitty things that weren't fixed in ANH:R that still knaw at me a bit but EVERYTHING that really really really bugged me were fixed and that's saying a lot considering how nitpicky I am.

Keep your eye on the ball people. I couldn't care less what the EU says about Han Solo's pants. What about Chewy??? The wookie has no pants!!! (No offense to whoever posted that)

Oh, and here's my little nitpicky thing of the day. Peace fellow geeks.

Here you can see 4 things: Goggles in different position, scarf in different position, bloodier face, blood on the snow

When you guys get on the technical side of sound and whatnot, I start getting totally lost. So, as vacation from this thread, I was looking around at some stuff elsewhere and stumbled upon a quick 7 response thread from 1992 that I think everyone here might find interesting. Its funny that just now we are discussing the very thing that these guys were dreaming about 16 years ago. This only takes about 2 minutes to read so let me know what you think.

Once you read it, imagine their reaction if they had their hands on Ady's edit! This is a testament to how long we've waited for these edits to finally happen and happen correctly. http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.sf.starwars/browse_thread/thread/fd042cb8d6e1583f/2685d028e8b9c349?lnk=st&q=#2685d028e8b9c349

Wow. I can't believe I never noticed that the background plate was exactly the same in those two shots (falcon/slave I). Even the clouds are exact. If that stays in it will bug me forever. Thanks for that.

Oh! Hell I just thought of one of the biggest things that bugs me. In ANH, I can sort of handle the fact that Tarkin and Dodonna pronounce Leia "Lee uh". Begrudgingly, I can even handle Lando saying Han's name like it rhymes with "hand" and then 3PO repeating him because he says "it sounds like Han(d)". The one thing I can't stand though is Leia saying it that way. She says it correctly several times before this scene and then she says it just like Lando and 3PO. That definitely needs to be fixed. The best "Han" she says to match the tone would be "Han, get up here" during the asteroid chase.

Jeez I wish I could do this stuff myself.

Also, you don't have to have much of a dirty mind to get this one. When Yoda tells Luke that he'll take him to "Yoda" he beckons Luke and there needs to be a pause. Just a little longer..... it sounds so gross the way it is. Let's take out the period between the two sentences and this is how it sounds.....

Luke: "You know him?"

Yoda: "Take you to him I will. Yes. Yes. But now let's eat (no pause) come. Good food. Come. Come."

Does anyone else find the sick humor in this or is it just me. Kinda reminds me of the "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought" line.

Here's my 5 cents on the "TIE Fighters at Cloud City" issue:

At first I was excited about the prospect, then I read the good arguments about how that really wouldn't be Vader's MO. Then Darth Stewie turned me back around to liking it as we don't get to see much Imperial oppression against innocents. However, I still don't think it fits due to sequences in the movie.

Lando and Co blast their way out of Cloud City and leave in the Falcon with no problem. Then they turn around and pick up Luke. THEN the TIEs come down on them. I think that's when the "more Imperial troops" are arriving, because if there's already TIEs in the air over Cloud City, how does the Falcon leave, come back, and pick up Luke without being shot at?

I'm all for having various ships leaving after Lando announces the Empire's intentions (and as a fan of "Firefly", you could have Serenity really small in the background), but I'm no for the TIEs.

Okay, here's me trying to swing you back again....... Think of it. Who says that Lando and Co. blast their way out with no problem? IMO, your sequence of events is incorrect. You said "Then they turn around and pick up Luke. THEN the TIEs come down on them." That's not right. That's what we see, but the dialogue says differently. Right when Leia says "we've got to go back" Lando replies "What about those fighters?" Well right there is what we need to justify putting some TIES in. There are apparently TIES after them and the Imperials did what? Give up? That doesn't add up. I mean, are they just sitting around on some landing platform next to their TIES having coffee and a donut when one of the pilots looks to his buddies and says, "Damn. Its a shame they got away. I'm sure Lord Vader will be understanding that we were on a break and couldn't go after them. I mean, Union rules and all.... Hey... What's that in the distance there? Oh shit! Those fools turned around! Hell, I guess we had better get to work and go chase them now. Hey TK469... have you seen my keys?" Granted, this is one possible scenario but I have a different theory. I believe there's a whole squadron there busy with their orders to blast anything out of the sky that moves since at this point the Imperials are aware of Leia's escape and Lando's treachery. It would make everything even more intense knowing that the TIES are everywhere and ships are getting blown to smithereens and yet, after barely escaping on the platform and being just far enough ahead of the pursuing TIES, Leia insists they go back into that hellstorm to rescue Luke. At this point, you have to feel Lando's exasperation when he hears her make the "suggestion" that they turn back. We don't actually know what will happen to our heroes this time because so much bad has happened to them in this film already that they don't seem bulletproof anymore. Plus, only 3 TIE fighters!!! Come on! I don't buy it. After everything the Imperials went through to capture them it would seem that the same guy who said, "Hold your fire. There aren't any lifeforms aboard" is the one giving the orders. Here's the scene,

Officer: "Commander. The rebels that Lord Vader is "force choking" everybody to get his hands on, have just escaped, but they have just taken off and aren't that far ahead. What should we do?"

Commander: "Send 3 fighters to pursue them!"

Officer: "You mean 3 fighter squadrons right?"

Commander: "No. Just 3 Fighters."

Officer: "Sir.... are we paying by the laser now?"

Commander: "You don't make the budget Terry.... I do."

Well, besides the incident with Alderaan, we never see the "oppression" of the Empire. We just know they're bad because of blowing up a planet but besides fighting the Rebellion (and eliminating the Jedi in the PT), what is actually shown about how the Empire actually treats the populace? Everyone cheers at the end of the saga and that shows that the galaxy thinks its a good thing that the Emperor is finished. Everyone runs around screaming when they hear that the Empire has taken control of Cloud City, so that shows that they are very very afraid of the implications of an Imperial occupation. It reminds me of how afraid the denizens of Mos Eisley were when the few troops were moving down the alleyways. So, I'm all for blowing up a few fleeing ships. Shows that they don't F around. Anything to make the Empire more menacing is okay in my book. When I think of how the PT and the Clone Wars makes the stormtroopers so badass, its disappointing to see how inept they become in the OT. I'd like to feel a little afraid for our main heroes and others like we do aboard the Tantive IV. When they blew through that door and started mowing the Alderaanian guard to shreds, you could feel that these folks were about to get slaughtered. But at Hoth, you feel the menace from the walkers but when the snowtroopers come in they get clobbered by one little gun from the Falcon (that seems to be on automatic).

So, my two cents is, the more menace felt from the Empire, the better. But, if people are so against it, at least have a few cloud cars pulled over by a TIE fighter and show him writing the pilot a speeding ticket.

I'm totally against removing the balcony. In fact, I'm totally against removing most of the cloud city additions. Unlike the wampa additions, I think that most of these were great. Just because they were in the special edition doesn't mean that it was bad or even unnecessary. I never liked the claustrophobic feel of cloud city. To me, it always seemed like a compromise of film making for the time. In 97', I went "Ah Ha! They finally fixed that!" when I saw it on screen. We can't be such purists since this series of fan edits are altering the original in a ton of different ways, not just fixing errors.

And by the by, I was thinking last night about whether or not Ady would indeed do his edit for the entire saga and it got me thinking about what that thread would be like for The Phantom Menace. I've noticed that we're all pretty civilized here but that conversation would be a bloodbath I think. I don't even want to think of the JarJar conversations or the debate over midicholorians. I've read some of the other threads that I was not involved in for other edits and those got pretty nasty at times. Since his edits are merely trying to "fix" the saga without necessarily "changing" them like all the other TPM edits, it makes me wonder what road that edit will go down. With Empire, we're pretty much all nice people here and we treat Ady with kid gloves because our fandom is hoping he can pull off the same magic he did again and we're all afraid of something bad happening (don't worry, I have faith but shit happens sometimes). But we're all talking about the "Best" movie in the series, what happens when we talk about the "worst"?

Of course, anything done to TPM will be an improvement. I've seen a couple of the edits but really, all those do is cut stuff and maybe add poorly done alien languages over Jar Jar and the Nemoidians. I can cut a movie and I'm a total amateur. I don't want a new cut, I want the movie to be "fixed". Don't ask what that means. You either know what I mean or you don't.

Ahh, I better stop. Its starting to go off on a tangent.

Here's a little tidbit. The very next cut after we see leia, lando & company take off, we see a high shot of the thing vader and luke were fighting inside of. look at the window (i know, its hard to see on these pics cuz i don't have a good print on my computer) in both pics. they are different sizes and in different places.

Ady, look here man, I know you got skrills and all so hopefully you'll finally do something about the ewok poop on the wookie's foot. That's just really bugged me for years and the smell is awful. IMDB seems to be the only source on this, as no one I've seen in other threads can produce the evidence or video that the fleet ever went into hyperspace. I need to see if my dad still has the original CBS-FOX VHS copies of ESB and RotJ and see if this is true. I grew up on those copies though, and I don't remember that.

I just had to check, because I remembered the jump too.
On my copy from the Definitive Collection, the scene ends in a radial wipe to end credits. On my OOT-tape (recorded from TV, my THX tape was lost to a hungry VCR), it is a straight cut. The wipe sure reminds of a hyperspace jump, and I guess that it was the intended effect.

You know what? I think you were right. I would have bet the farm that the fleet went into hyperspace but I just went back to my CBS/FOX set and sure enough, it ALMOST seems like they jump. In fact though, its the very very quick iris in wipe that threw me. I was so certain but its been a few years since I've even put those in the VCR. I humbly stand corrected.

Its amazing though that we're all nitpicking the color corrections and what-not. I grew up watching the CBS/FOX versions and remember thinking how clear Jedi looked compared to ANH (which of course was just STAR WARS back then). When the THX versions came out, I was so broke I couldn't afford them and I caught about 20 minutes of it at a friend of a friend's house. I was STUNNED at how much better they looked. I was obsessed with finding the money to buy them. But today, it hurts my eyes to even look at a VCR tape. I have a 50' Plazma 1080 and have become so accustomed to high quality that even ANH:R bugs me cause I don't have it in Full HD. How spoiled my son will be. He actually knows a little bit about the differences of ANH:R and keeps asking me "When is that man going to make the new Empire Strikes back?" He's only 6 and he's becoming a Star Wars geek just like his dear ol' dad. I was only 5 when ESB came out and I've been hooked ever since. Its weird to think that he'll never know what it was like all those years just imagining what the prequels would be like and when they would ever come. He'll always know the prequels, clone wars, live action show, comics, books, etc etc. There was a time that all we really had were 6 hours of the same movies over and over. Sure, there were the old Marvel comics and the Han Solo books but that wasn't enough and were sub-par at best. I remember the dry spell of the late 80's and early 90's. That was terrible for Star Wars Fandom. ANY speck of new things was examined and reexamined because there was nothing else. AND THEN.... Timothy Zahn. I'm not a huge huge fan of the books but they ushered in a new era. They were okay in my opinion but the fact that there were 3 big books and the series was taken very serious made them golden in my eyes. Then Darkhorse made their adaptations and it just snowballed from there.

This rant was brought about by watching my old tape. I just love these movies because they remind me of different times in my life that I'd love to hold onto forever. I don't understand exactly why I love them so much and may never have a good answer. I do know, that the work being done here means a lot to me and to every member of this board. We're not jealous of Ady because he has the skills to do what most of us do not, we're enthralled that our Fandom has someone in it with the same affection for this as we do but has the skills to do what we all daydream about. I'm not going to give you any more kudos because I've done it in the past, but I will say that if you somehow decide to follow through with your cruel (oh so cruel) April's Fool's charade or maybe keel over dead, or get hit by a herd of jackalopes, or maybe get married to a Trekkie who has you P-whipped and makes you try and do "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home : Revisited" instead of doing this project, then I will learn very quickly how to do this shit myself. This NEEDS to be done. "ImperialFighter" cracks me up because he's so damn detail oriented that he makes me seem almost like an amateur Star Wars enthusiast. HE needs this. I need this. We all need this.

I hate the internet sometimes but never when I come here.

Peace

Just a couple things from IMDB that I myself noticed too and they bug me. Many of the little details don't, but these do... maybe its something for you to consider.....

1. The original version has the Rebel fleet hyperspace out immediately before the end credits. Follow-up versions (THX re-release, Special Edition and DVD) all cut to the end credits before the hyperspace jump.

2. As they are are walking through cloud city, Leia is between Han and Lando. As they come around a corner, Han and Lando have switched places.

3. In the updated special edition TESB, as Han, Leia, Lando and Chewy are walking to the trap Vader has set, they walk past one of the new "visualizations" with a lift going up and a view of Bespin. Yet in the following shot, when you see Han holding his gun, the original browny white background is back in its place.

4. During the Battle for Hoth, several rebel soldiers fall down without being hit.

5. (This one REALLY bugs me) Several times, during the escape from Cloud City, stormtroopers are shot, but no blast marks are left on their armor. In addition, the intensity of the guns' blasters against the stormtroopers progressively decreases and increases during the episode.

6. (This one REALLY REALLY bugs the living hell out of me throughout the entire saga) The sounds for lasers and lightsabers change throughout the movie, even with the same weapon being used more than once in a scene. A good example is Han's blaster in the asteroid cave, which makes at least two completely different noises when firing. (Or lightsabers..... if each lightsaber sounds different, I can accept that. But when they clash, they should all sound the same. The lack of big clash noise ruined every lightsaber battle for me, and the fact that each battle sounded completely different from one another sucked, especially the Dooku scenes. But don't get me started on those cause i could go on for hours)

Just a couple for tonight. Just me being nitpicky.

Bobby Jay, actually its the exact same shot but from two different vantage points. It is meant to be the same landing. It backtracks slightly through time to show Luke's witnessing of it. I've always disliked that aspect since Star Wars has always been linear. But beyond that, I prefer the probe rising AFTER Luke gets bitch slapped.

Hey everyone. A few weeks back, I mentioned rearranging these very two minutes of the movie. I'm putting a link here to show the arrangement. This to me represents a stronger opening sequence. No more seeing the probe land twice and its reveal is pushed to the very end of the sequence instead at the middle. Its better watched with the sound down because all I did was rearrange stuff. I didn't fix the sound or anything to go with it.

I have no editing software worth a damn and for some reason Windows MovieMaker is making half the screen green. I don't know how to fix it. The point isn't how it looks but the edit itself. Let me know what you think.... especially you Adywan.
