Most states prohibit discrimination based on sex (/“gender”) for any “public accommodation,” which is typically defined so as to expressly include “movie houses,” or something equivalent.
Assuming this screening was at Austin’s Alamo, however, it would not be a “civil rights violation,” not because Finkly was flip and snarky, but only because Texas is one of just five states that does not outright prohibit discrimination by a private party based on gender. In 45 states, though, this practice would unquestionably be deemed a civil rights violation.
(The damages, however, would be so low that no lawyer other than a selfless crusader would take the case, which he would do on principle.)

Why did I watch this today? I don’t know, honestly. Maybe I hoped that it wouldn’t be as bad as I remembered, maybe I was bored and grabbed it without thinking, I don’t know. Somehow even worse than I remembered. As I wrote in my long chain of tweets while watching, this movie has no connective tissue, everything just… happens. This is the cinematic equivilant of buying a bag of chips that turns out to be mostly air.
And then two putrid, poison chips. Those are the “Jar Jar” and “Lil Orphan Ani” chips.

It’s not that Disney doesn’t want to share any profits at all with Fox. It’s that they don’t want to share the sudden spike in profits that would come with a 4k/OOT release.
That doesn’t make any sense though. If that were the case, that wouldn’t stop them from working on such a release at the present time, which they aren’t. It can take years for a restoration on this scale to be finished, and if they aren’t going to sell it until 2020 anyway, there’s no reason for them not to get a head start on it now if that was there intent.

Even if they didn’t start working on it until 2018, two years seems like a long enough time.
Whatever they DO do, IF they do anything, it’ll be quiet and on the quick-and-semi-cheap anyway. Hopefully not as bad as the GOUT, but I wouldn’t expect much more. It won’t be treated like some big flagship project—it’ll just be a limited staff preparing what will essentially be a special feature.
