Info: Interesting notes on Lucas' DVDs
Time
I believe that happened after the print/negatives were cleaned. You do notice lack of grain on the new DVD's, and it's wrong. Honestly. Watch Terminator, some scenes have quite a bit of grain, but that's okay. It's not a huge amount and it isn't anything to worry about. There are some scratches here and there that could have been removed, but gain removal??? If you can clean the film roll enough to reduce the grain, go for gold. Heck, even some level of digital grain removal might be considered acceptable, but trust Lucas to over-do it.

The law simply prevents innocent men from being punished for crimes they don't commit. Just because your twin-brother is attached to you doesn't mean he helped you or encouraged you in your murder. In fact he was probably the key witness. Unless he was sleeping, intoxicated or deaf and blind.

No, I am not entitled to own a backup without express permission from the copyright holder. However the MPAA has no jurisdiction over me, so they can go and rot in America. In Canada file-swapping is legal.

.: The Zion DVD Project :. (Released)
Time
It would be my strongest suggestion to Zion that he makes a DVD-5 version for torrents and people who want to pay a cheaper rate to have them burnt (and the peace of mind that DVD-R is a solid format accepted by almost every machine, whereas DL media may cause some problems). I would suggest making a DL version only for those who want the highest quality. So yes, I think it should come in both flavours.

Then for anyone who distributes them it should be standard to post the DVD-R version, and to offer the DL version along with it for those interested in higher quality (I would strongly suggest everyone who distributes to always include the single-layer version with the dual-layer version). Those are my personal feelings on the matter. The other thing, is that people who want the highest quality won't want to get re-compressed editions of your set, Zion, which means if you don't personally release a DVD-5 version, someone - or many people will recompress it. Even I probably would. They'll do it if they downloaded an 8.5Gig torrent and they only have a single-layer burner. They'll do it if they distribute and there's demand for a DVD-5 version as opposed to a DL version.

Hey, I didn't invent the riddle. MeBe is right. As it would mean sentencing an innocent man, the guilty man can't be sentenced. I guess it his turn, unless sean wookie wants to have his go now (well, I did skip him - but only because the thread was idle for a week)...

No, that is not the answer. To quote the last part of my question:

Why wasn't he sentenced to life-imprisonment?

If he was already in gaol and found guilty of murder he would still be sentenced to life-imprisonment (or possibly a lesser duration) to be served concurrently with his current sentence.

Also to quote the first sentence in my question:

A man is put on trial for murder.

He is a man, not a child. Age isn't truly important to the answer, except that he is older than 18. You've all come up with imaginative and inventive answers, the creativity is certainly there - but not the answer I'm looking for, nor anything really close to it. There is no trick question, however because of whatever legal reasons he couldn't be sentenced to gaol. This is a solid reason, and if a case ever happened like it you would expect the man to walk free. Except that it wouldn't be a riddle to figure out why he went free, it'd be bleedingly obvious.

Now complete this sentence and you'll work out the answer in a matter of minutes:

They would not convict a guilty man if it meant sentencing an ....

Nup, still not there. Start by finishing the sentence I gave you and you'll get the answer. The man has no special legal privileges which interferes with the law sentencing him, just like you or I don't - however his situation prohibits it because of what sentencing him would mean...

I also was really stoked to get these DVD's but they were even a bigger let down then the Official DVD's so I've even removed them from my list.
You built your expectations up far too much Rik, you were excited to see the new set, but expected it to offer something the previous ones didn't. It's one of the reasons I'm happy to sit with what I have for the time being. TR-47's may not be fantastic quality but it is certainly watchable quality, and enjoyable. I remember someone on eBay who bought (for far too much) a SW set he was really disappointed in. I told him I'd trade it for TR-47's set (free) - and he was really happy with the quality after that. I was interested in seeing different transfers, especially because this one was not from the DE or Faces LD's and from an older release.

No pardons. Okay, I'll help you out by stating legal doctrine:

They would not convict a man if it meant sentencing an ....

From there you should be able to complete the above sentence and hence work out the reason this man couldn't be put away behind bars. No, completing the sentence is not enough, but it is a means to an end.

You're all wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. No double-jeopardy, no killings in gaol (he hasn't even been in gaol before), the victim was human, the offender is human and not insane, he's not the executioner on account that he wasn't facing execution, an out-dated form of punishment, he was facing life imprisonment - and is not only guilty as charged, but even pleaded guilty! Meaning he was indeed alive for the trial - and we can assume has gone on living quite happily after the trial. There is no war. The murder was not (ruled as) assisted suicide, self-defence, automatism, insanity or manslaughter. The murder was premeditated. He killed his victim in cold blood. He pleaded guilty to this, and he was found to have acted alone in the murder (meaning no one else has been convicted for the murder, and no one else was put on trial for the murder). He was convicted of murder, but will never be punished for the crime.

And no, it was not a mistrial! No come on, THINK...

-erm did I say 1 per customer, cause I meant the limit is 1 customer.

Do they even exist anymore? (the unaltered theatrical version of the Original Trilogy)
Time
As I understand it, the original negatives have been preserved and they were the ones cleaned - the negatives that were actually shot out of the cameras on-set, not copies. While Lucas may no longer have a complete reel of the original editions, he still has all the material required to re-build it.

Some of the film that included effects shots (like the ones with Light Sabres) won't be the film that the live on-set action was actually shot on, I understand that.

A man is put on trial for murder. He pleads guilty to first-degree murder. However he is not sentenced, and is allowed to go on living his life in the community. You can assume this man is not insane - he was found guilty of murder. Why wasn't he sentenced to life-imprisonment?
