Rian Johnson to Head New Star Wars Trilogy
Time

I just find it hard to get excited about anything Star Wars related these days, when the actual movies that started it all aren’t even available and are being ignored by the copyright owners.
And after seeing the first two Disney-SW movies I would happily trade all of the “Rogue Ones” and “TFAs” in the world for a proper restoration of the OT.

2020 isn’t going to make any difference. Kathleen Kennedy has already said the OOT is never coming.

She said there were no plans to release the original versions. That doesn’t mean it can’t every happen. And she said they wouldn’t further change them. That’s it. That’s all she’s said. So you can stop stating your personal opinionated interpretation as a fact that she definitely said things she didn’t.

Where did she say they had no plans to release them? I’ve heard people say this before, but I haven’t found any evidence that she has ever specifically addressed this question.

Marcia Lucas Speaks!

I’ve always thought it works perfectly. No one in-story has any reason at all to expect it, so neither should we. It’s a genuine surprise to everyone - characters as well as audience.

Plus, there is a sort of set-up (whether Lucas intended it or not). Han is the only one who knows what he’s doing, not even Chewie knows. He may be giving us a hint when he says “I know what I’m doing”. To me, it feels like he may already have it in his mind to consider helping them.

However, true to his character he first secures Chewie, their pay, and their ship. He gets what’s important to him out of harm’s way and then makes the final decision to help from a position of relative safety - off of the target planet & base, away from the notice of the Empire.

No issues with that scene at all for me.

Oh yeah it totally works. I’ve never heard of anyone having a problem with it, and obviously that was one of the moments that received applause from the audience. It sounds like Marcia was just nervous initially about editing that sequence together, and wasn’t sure the audience would buy it without some sort of set up. She was a great editor and I think the editing during the entire death star attack is brilliant.

And Spielberg has re-edited the movie so many damn times, I don’t even know what his preferred cut is anymore.

Well, in fairness to him, he really only re-edited it once, which is his preferred “director’s cut”.
Since the theatrical version had to be rushed into theaters to save Columbia from Bankruptcy, Spielberg didn’t have time to shoot everything and so he requested extra money the next year to finish his cut.

As for the third “special edition” cut with the footage from inside the ship, Spielberg was 100% against it from the beginning, but the studio would not give him money for his cut unless he agreed to do it.

You’ve got it a little backwards. The special edition was second, and the director’s cut was third. All three have gotten proper home video releases of course, showing it’s actually not that hard to include multiple versions of a film in one set (there is however a TV cut I believe that’s basically the theatrical and SE put together that’s never gotten a true release).

I’m personally hoping it’s the director’s cut that goes in theaters as it’s sort of the best of both worlds in terms of theatrical vs. SE (though I’ve still never seen the SE - Spielberg said the Mothership’s interior wasn’t meant to be seen and that sounded about right to me).

Yeah, I know I didnt mean to imply that was the release order, but rather that the special edition was the least significant, since Spielberg never wanted to do it. I agree with him on not showing the inside of the mother ship, and I dont consider that one a legitimate cut of the movie.

I’ll send him a message and see if he knows what it was. I found another guy that was there as well.

Did anything come of this?

Not really. I got a reply back from one guy, who simply said: "The picture and sound quality was of a lower standard that we as a modern cinema audience are used to."
I again asked him if he could specify whether it was an actual 35mm print or something else, but he never replied back.

I’m not sure if it’s the old memory - or just that there’s just so much great Star Wars art out there, but stuff like this…

http://www.iamag.co/features/star-wars-the-art-of-ralph-angus-mcquarrie-100-concept-art/

with pics on there like this below - in which there are great little pieces I don’t recall seeing before - is pretty great…

Very cool.
I dont remember seeing these before either. Mcquarrie obviously did a ton of work over the years.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **

The question is why she hired them in the first place.

A fair question. An article I read said it was Kasdan who chose Lord and Miller and then made a big push for them with Lucasfilm/Disney.
I’m not sure why he or KK thought they would be a good fit, especially since Kennedy stated last year that the movie would have more of a “western” feel. A comedy duo doesn’t seem like the most obvious choice, although I haven’t seen all of their work.
