Is version 3 going to be created using scans of 35mm prints? Or is it derived from the official blu-ray like previous versions?

This project will always have a blu-ray (or highest quality available) backbone.

Ah. So version 3 will have fairly similar colour timing to the previous versions?

THX on 35mm Tech IB preservation - HELP NEEDED (work in progress)

They don’t have the benefit of knowing all the differences we’ve uncovered beginning with the Italian tv recording. The Laserdisc is probably the 1978 reissue version.

The (widely available) pan & scan VHS is the same cut of the film as the letterboxed laserdisc and VHS. Except the letterboxed version has an anachronistic Warner logo and altered colour timing. You don’t need to be a member of Original Trilogy to know that laserdisc isn’t the original version of the film.

Well, my plan is to mostly just clean the print shots and intercut them with the DC where necessary.

Hey, Harmy, glad you’re tackling this one! I guess you’ve already seen Movie Censorship’s detailed comparison between LD and DC, but just in case, here it is https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=541751

That comparison is wrong! It claims that the letterboxed laser disc is the original version, but it ain’t. The colour timing on that laser disc is completely wrong, for example, the opening credits were not originally white, they were green. The 2004 version’s colour timing is actually much closer to the original. Also, the gold Warner Bros logo wasn’t used originally. The 2004 version restored the correct Warner Bros logo. I have a copy of an earlier pan and scan VHS, which predates the letterboxed release. On the pan and scan VHS, the opening titles are green and the Warner Bros logo is the red one. Also, the colour timing is much warmer.

I’ll send him a message and see if he knows what it was. I found another guy that was there as well.

Did anything come of this?

Not really. I got a reply back from one guy, who simply said: "The picture and sound quality was of a lower standard that we as a modern cinema audience are used to."
I again asked him if he could specify whether it was an actual 35mm print or something else, but he never replied back.

Lol, that sounds like something the Lucas apologist trolls on theforce.net would say.

Max_Rebo's '97 SE superset' preservation (* unfinished project *)

Hi everybody,

yes this project is still ongoing although I haven’t done anything in a while.

Current status:

ESB is almost complete I just need to finish syncing the 5.1 track

ANH video is edited but it requires colour correction to match the different sources (new avisynth filter required so I need to brush up on my C++)

ROTJ is just a mess the sources are both crap in different ways so it’s not as simple as cutting between them, one source is really soft and noisey and the other is sharp but has been filtered in such a way that a lot of small details, like sparks and blaster bolts, have been lost, basically it’s anything that’s small and moves really fast, whatever filtering has been done has obviously interpreted it as dirt and removed it.

here are some examples, TB(soft and noisy) at the top, GKAR (sharp and filtered) at the bottom, in the middle is the difference between them:

If you compare the images you can see that each black blob on the middle image corresponds to a bit of debris from the explosion in the top image that is not present on the bottom image.

I don’t think this one needs any explanation.

So what I am going to do is use the GKAR as a base and then Re-composite all these missing bits back in where they should be from the TB, which sounds really difficult, but I’ve done some tests and if I’m careful I should be able to automate the process by using the middle image to generate a mask which can be used in the overlay. I’m confident this will produce good results but I need to do a few more tests first.

I will keep you posted, but don’t expect a release in the near future as I want to complete all three and release them at the same time (in case I realise something when doing ROTJ which could make ESB better)

this ‘project’ is taking forever - started over a year ago!

Many thanks for your ‘useful’ comment - you have keen powers of observation!

Did this project ever see the light of day? I for one would love to see the results.

After this, will you move on to ROPUT (Rise of the Prequel Unaltered Trilogy).

Ep 1: laserdisc
Ep 2: Centropy bootleg
Ep 3: screener

And perhaps you should release Star Wars first, that way you can get any feedback before encoding/ releasing ESB/RotJ

Tempting, very tempting. Only time will tell – I would love to at least preserve TPM though!

Good idea, I’ll start with ANH first, paired with the '93 LD audio in LPCM.

I would love it if you could do a preservation of the Phantom Menace laser disc.

I can forgive him for the prequels, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forgive him for taking the theatrical cuts out of circulation and replacing them with versions graded by Stevie Wonder.

That’s very offensive. Stevie Wonder does a much better job of color grading.

Mr Wonder certainly couldn’t do any worse. He would at least entertain the opinions of others.

Its so sad that when I see Lucas I think “For fucks sake” rather than “Yay! Creator of the thing I like!”

Indeed. He should be my hero. Instead I think he is a tool. 😦

I can forgive him for the prequels, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forgive him for taking the theatrical cuts out of circulation and replacing them with versions graded by Stevie Wonder.

Fuck it. I’m so tempted to buy the burned Despecialized Blu-Rays off ebay. I’m beyond sick of this. Fuck you Lucas you old bastard. No one likes your Prequels no matter how hard you whore them.

Mate, just download them from myspleen - please don’t give money to the pricks on ebay profiting off Harmy and everyone who contributed to making the DeSepecialised Editions happen.

The problem is the Despecialized editions simply aren’t good enough. The colour timing is way way off. In the case of A New Hope it’s dire. Silver Screen edition is great, but for the sequels all we have is the grindhouse versions.

I’d love a series about the fall of Ben Solo, it’d definitely be more dramatic than a book about it.

As for the Celebration surprise(s), someone mentioned earlier the possibility of it being a Lucas appearance. That would be fitting, and I don’t think anyone said the surprise would be any kind of announcement. If anything, the big surprise being merchandise of any kind, including a new home media release, would probably get an underwhelming “making the fans buy the same movies again” response, OOT or not. That doesn’t sound like a fitting enough surprise for such a huge panel.

It will probably be Ford and Lucas. But neither of those is really a big deal. Short of the OOT or Carrie back from the dead, there’s very little they can do to “surprise” us.

Marcia Lucas?
