NJVC Custom Blu-ray Set of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions now available on Mega

Here’s the problem though - random member tinkers, does a poor job, and uploads it. It starts going around the internets and suddenly there’s a subpar product out there that people are downloading with Harmy’s (and maybe njvc’s) name(s) on it.

As the “creator” of content, I wouldn’t want someone doing that.

Also, Blu-ray players are insanely cheap now. Anyone who doesn’t have interest in getting one doesn’t get much sympathy from me anymore.

I get where you are coming from. But rest assured I have no intention of just doing this and then uploading without Harmy and NJVC having the final say. I will first pm them both and see if they are ok with it. If that step is successful then I’ll send the both of them a draft to view themselves and if they arent happy with the final product then thats where it will end. No sub par product floating around the inter webs.

NJVC Custom Blu-ray Set of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions now available on Mega

Hi there. Thanks to you I have aquired these awesome sets of iso files. I was wondering if you think there would be any interest in making the sets smaller in file size. Just the three main 50gb discs obviously. I’m talking about a complete copy/ shrink down to bd-25 size. Ive done this with Star Wars already and am about to try Empire, using a program called BD rebuilder. Because I didn’t want to fork out for more expensive 50gb blu rays. The quality imo is no different. Ive played the 50gb iso file mounted with daemon tools alongside my newly burned 25gb version on my blu Ray player and I honestly cant tell any difference in HD quality or audio.

I want to give something back to the community here and I dont do film restoration but I am pretty good at video encoding so I had this idea. I have a paid for Mega account which I would upload the files to for everyone here to use. Obviously only if enough people show an interest. Mainly I had this idea because some of us dont have great internet so the prospect of downloading 75gb instead of 150 is a little less daunting and people could still get these sweet sets with the exact same motion menus and features etc. Anyway what do you think? Would Any of you here be interested in a lite version of the njvc set?

I’ve said before that, from a purely filmmaking standpoint, this addition is probably the worst in the entire Special Edition.  Yes, there are things that are dumber and more agonizing from a fan standpoint, but, aside from the addition of the Jabba scene, there is no other part of the SE that RUINS THE PACING as much as this.  The Falcon is rushing back to save Luke, the music is pumping, the TIEs are closing in… AND THE FILM JUST FUCKING STOPS SO WE CAN WATCH VADER ARRIVE ON HIS SHIP?!  Whose crack-addled brain came up with that one?!

Yeah, it’s one of the least talked about alterations but it’s really one of the worst changes. It makes you wonder how Lucas was ever successful at all because it demonstrates a complete lack of knowledge over pacing and basic filmmaking in general. The first time I actually watched Empire straight through was after getting the 2004 set and I seem to remember being confused as to why Vaders big ship looked identical to the second Death Star. The film might have well gone to a commercial break. “We interrupt the conclusion of Empire Strikes Back for this paid promotional segment by the Empire.” God I wish Nostalgia Critic would just tear into that.

The music editing is really horrible too, it just abruptly goes back to the music when Vader reveals he’s Luke’s father.

If you have the 1997 version, you can also compare how much blue tinted it was in 2004.

Another Empire edit that bothers me (which no one else points out either). Lando frees Chewbacca who starts choking Lando. Leia says “You think after what you did to Han we’re going to trust you?”

In the 2004 audio mix, Chewbacca’s growl comes in sooner completely drowing out “trust you” from Leia.

“You think after what you did to Han, we’re going to- garrragggaahhh”

Just another reason the 2004 is the worst ever.

There may be more artwork for Harmy’s ROTJ Grindhouse in that thread too - or the http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Harmys-RETURN-OF-THE-JEDI-Grindhouse-35mm-LPP/id/48258 too?

It’s likely worth checking out some of other quality work on here to see what you like, what can easily be cannibalised, or just for ideas and inspiration etc.

Good luck with it - and please post up in here any good stuff you find 😃

Thanks man really appreciate it.

Hi guys, does anyone have a list of suggested names for each chapter break in the de’s of sw,esb and jedi? I have looked around but cant find anything. I can happily insert my own chosen names into AVCHD i just wondered if anyone had made some up. Thanks.

alexp120 has done this for most releases i think. Either find a way to summon him, or else try a google site search “site:originaltrilogy.com alexp120 chapter break”

Thanks for such a quick reply

Thanks for confirming that. Is that cleaned up track available anywhere for remuxing into the SSE? Planning to watch this soon and wanted to make sure I had the best audio option. If it’s too much of a bother, please don’t worry about it.

I just downloaded v1.6 and it’s a 39gig ISO file. The file name is “Star Wars 1977 TN1 v1.6 BR” This obviously won’t rip to a BR, unless I don’t know something. Anybody got any tips/hints?

Like has been said a dual layer 50gb bd-r is the way to go. Make sure to use a decent branded one like sony or Panasonic and burn at the lowest speed possible your drive will allow. Thats option one.

Alternatively you can go with option two like I have. Being too tight to buy 50gb bds I used daemon tools to mount the iso image and then you can use either BdRebuilder or Bdtoavchd ( google these ) to shrink the iso down to the size of a standard 25gb bd-r.

Some here might say 50gb is the only option they would trust but I cant see any quality issues with my 25gb disc even though it’s a shrinking in size of 35% it still looks incredible to me.

Hi guys I’m new here and I dont know where to post this. ( no its not an invite request bet thats what you thought. )

There seems to be a guy on eBay with a listing right now for the star wars despecialized trilogy probably with the iso types with menus and hes also including tn1 and harmys 35mm scans as well.

He is claiming that the content is free and that there is an honor system that he abides by. This guy is a joke. He claims that the 200 bucks hes charging is just for the cost of the materials and the time it took him to create the set and edit it together.

When really hea probably done very little editing if hes used nvjcs isos . Also printing to discs and printing out disc inserts isnt too expensive or time consuming.

I estimate what hes done costing him no more than about 40 to 50 dollars not the 200 asking price.

Whichever way he describes it hes selling what he shouldnt be selling. Just a heads up and I have reported him.

I went ahead and made myself a set. It has cost me about 125+ to make with professional printing, buying criterion cases, the blank blu-rays, etc… I asked ronwlim here on the site to see if he could make the same box set that he has produced and he quoted me $200. So to ask for $200 isn’t that unreasonable.

I think you are overestimating his costs. What the listing that Captain_Danielsan mentioned talks about is not a “box set” but just a set of blu-ray/DVD cases with burned/printed discs.

I have completed five copies of my box set and my total costs per set (excluding the box) at this point are as follows:

BD50 x 4 = $8.00
BD25 x 6 = $6.00
DVD9 x 1 = $1.00
Criterion Blu-Ray Cases x 4 = $4.00
Paper = $2.00
Ink = $1.00

Total = $22.00

The materials cost of my slipacase box is probably another $3.00 - 4.00 per set so even if I included that the total would be under $30.00

That is a LOT of markup to get to $190.00 - $200.00 per set on eBay.

However - even if it was just a few dollars of markup that would be too much when the expressed wishes of the fans who created them are that they would be shared for free and never sold for profit.

I don’t know where you are getting your stuff printed, but most places around me that are willing to print them, which most aren’t due to copyright reasons, have a $25 minimum order and I have to go to a specialty place to get the discs printed on and that put me back $40. And the blu-ray cases are not $4.00, after shipping on casetopia.com I paid $22. The discs after shipping cost more than your total. I know these people on eBay are making a profit. But for some it is just easier to have them make it. I did not have a blu-ray burner I went and bought one so I could do so. There is a demand for them and if you can’t figure out the myspleen invite system, it is very hard to find an invite, so I get why people are paying the premium to get these. I almost caved and did so myself. It took me about a month between paychecks to finally finalize one set. I do understand that people here are getting their stuff taken and made a profit on, that sucks, but when you make it so difficult to get the source material people are going to cave and go the easy way and pay money to get it now.

I’m not trying to get in a big fight here, but my pricing is what I paid per set.

I did get some economies of scale because I knew I wanted to make at least 5 sets for myself and to give as gifts.

BD50 printable 25disc spindle was $49.95 = $2.00/disc

BD25 printable 50disc spindle was $21.00 = $0.42/disc

DVD9 printable 50disc spindle was $27.00 = $0.54/disc

Casetopia Criterion BD cases… my total order for enough cases to do at least 6 sets was $41.00 shipped (20 3 disc cases and 10 2 disc cases) = $1.37/case

Ink $18.95 for 4 sets of ink for my printer - I used less than two full sets of ink cartridges for 5+ sets, including lots of experimental printing = about $1.00 per set for ink

Paper - I used very high quality HP double sided glossy brochure paper $39.99 for 150 sheets. Each set as the eBay poster has advertised would take 4 to 5 sheets of paper total: About $1.25

All of these are still the prices you can purchase these items for today. Yes, it would be expensive on a per-set basis if you just purchased enough to make one set, but that is not what the ebay sellers are doing. They are probably buying in more bulk than I did for my project.

Just because you chose to/needed to go with a more expensive route for the production of your set, doesn’t mean that it has to cost that much - and I certainly would expect that the ebayer is not having the printed materials professionally printed. He even talks about the cost of ink in his product description. He’s not getting them professionally printed.

I understand that some people don’t have the expertise, equipment or time needed to produce a set on their own, but for someone who is interested, you don’t have to spend anything like $125 - $200 to get a set for yourself.

Heck, with all of the above costs, I didn’t include the one piece of equipment I did have to purchase to do this project: a new Canon MX922 printer to print the discs and high-quality inkjet prints for the inserts/brochures. That printer cost me $80.00 (and included enough ink for at least one full set), so even if I added that to the out of pocket cost for the first set, I still came in under $110.00

It took me a while to get an invitation to MySpleen in order to download the torrents so I could burn my disc… in the interim while I was waiting, I was posting here, exploring what I wanted my box set to look like, etc.

I was treating this like what it was meant to be… a hobby and a community based around a beloved movie from when I was a kid.

The people who are willing to pay $200 on ebay for a set are the smaller part of the problem. The vast majority of them were never going to come here (or other similar sites online) and seek out these discs.

But it is disingenuous to try to give the ebayers a pass because they are only charging a “reasonable” markup for their efforts. They are selling to an audience that doesn’t know or care about this place and by selling it at all… especially at the profit margins they are making… they are risking waking the sleeping bear of Disney/LucasFilm who have so far not taken any action against these fan projects that definitely violate copyright law.

This. And I’m pretty sure I can make my own set for around £30. That will be a 6 disc set including the de and the 35mms with labels, inserts and a custom made box ive learned how to do ( tutorials rule ) not bothering with slipcovers for my personal taste. I mentioned dollars earlier for the sake of the listing I’m in the UK . I’m really going to enjoy making it to sit on my shelf and view at my pleasure. Then when people are round and say…hey whats this this looks cool! I’ll tell them about all the awesome people here and about All the hard work they have done. What a legacy.

It’s really quite upsetting to see these sets selling on Ebay. I put in so many hours creating it, happy to share it freely with fellow fans, but to see guys making big bucks off it… Really quite depressing. And I feel like this exposes me to risk of Disney’s wrath in a way I had not feared before.

I have no answer to this, just sharing the feels.

I dont know what else to suggest I mean truthfully we can all report them but eBay probably wont do anything because if these people are making bank then they are too. It would take Disney as you said to step into the room for eBay to care.

I think the only answer to stop this kind of thing would be being more careful letting knew members in perhaps? Maybe making the forums or certain parts of it private before a certain post count? Or maybe even some kind of loyalty thing like a reccomendation system from an experienced member. Like you have to have a recommendation before you can ask for anything?

Edit…I’m not assuming all the stuff sold comes from here I know these are out there now. But certainly some of the listings seem to have your menus etc…sw2.7 …etc

I’m just thinking out loud here any other ideas people? All I suggest is more hoops for folks to jump through before getting the goods…I know its hard enough as it is. But Disney could cast a large shadow if they wanted to.

Captain, out.
