Attention: all you "audio snobs" who hate MP3!
Time

My example to put on the table is the CD I did for a DVD release.

Heres the approximate time line for it..

Soundtrack recordings were recorded at 15 ips (as far as i could find out) archival tape in 1981-82. The recordings comprised of both analog and early digital synth equipment and vocals that would have also been recorded to multitrack originally then bounced down ..

generation drop when soundtracks were added to voice and effects (most were stock effects so you have a generation drop there also) this was put on archival again in 81/82

this was then synced to 16mm film and dupes were made, so you have another 2 generation drops

Broadcast masters were then made from the film dupes onto 1" for broadcast so another drop there..

This is basically the end of the line as far as the analog side goes and although I say generation loss its not really the same as when you used to copy cassettes, there is a loss of quality but its not near the same as your standard audio cassette..

at some point after this the original soundtrack masters vanish - some say they were burnt in a studio fire.

D1 was intergrated with broadcasting and broadcasters started to move over to using those, typically archiving the older masters to it.

its at this point you could look at the audio as becoming lossy..

D-1 used PCM audio which was and still is considered modern day lossless.. but of course you instantly lose quality as soon as you convert to digital, its just the way it is.. look at an analog signal compared to a digital.. a 48khz 16bit signal can't get anywhere close to an analog waveform though audibly you wouldnt really be able to tell the difference not even back then with a top end krell and apogee ribbon speakers.. (once considered the pinnacle of audiophilia) except for perhaps the issue of a lack of warmth that the analog audiophiles complained about with the advent of CD and Dat..

These D1 masters were then used in making the various DVD release's around the globe which were typically released with 192 and 256kbps lossy mp2 or ac3 audio

..and then my dumb idea to rebuild the now considered lost soundtracks...

95% of the audio i had to use was taken from these dvds and the rest from a copy of the PCM taken from the D-1's  - reason being i'd done most of the work before being offically envolved and i'd not access to better sources - nor had the dvd company aside form the UK D1 masters..

Even though 95% of the CD was created from hugely lossy material that when you look at it had been through MANY generation losses and conversons It still had to be mastered to CD specs - 44.1khz 16bit.. in the end the audio sounded as good as it could be.. slightly crap..

Amusingly I saw once someone want a copy of the CD after the release had sold out on one of the sites out there - insisting it had to be a lossless copy even though at the end of the day a 256kbps mp3 version wouldnt have really been audibly any different!!..

i think its fair to say that you probably hear lossy audio alot these days without even realising it.. did you know a percentage of tv advert voice overs are recorded and then uploaded to the ad producer as MP3's! this method is accepted now, crazy isnt it? some of the sound effects you hear on Tv and film are from lossy sources..

Some modern day sample heavy music - drum and bass for example use alot of sounds that come from breakbeat libraries - it seems that the "101 breaks collection" seems one of the main popular breakbeat libraries in drum and bass, which in its self is a huge WAV collection but some of the breakbeats were took from Mp3's by the author "101's" own admission...

funnily the more lossy the consumer market gets the less lossy the professional market gets..

bkev, its a matter of cost and rights. companys don't have the same amount of freedom as us fan creators. stuff costs money. EG the clean up cost just over £50000 for the 39 episodes alone, add on all the other costs involved and keep in mind its a cult cartoon with limited audience compared to any hollywood hit etc , you have to sell alot of products to get close to hitting profit.
I guess in an ideal world getting hold of a 16mm print and telecining it would be awesome but think of the cost of over 18 hours of footage. then comes the colour timing etc..
The Japanese version removed alot of esteban daydreaming and was cut to make esteban more the hero than mendoza saving his ass all the time.
I havent had chance to see the nick masters sadly I was basing my opinion on what the dvd director told me about them. I have got the BBC masters pre cleanup though and theres an incredible amount of crap on them - which would have been there when originally broadcast - makes you wonder how badly reels were treated back then..
sorry if my answers seem a little disjointed, kind of in the middle of moving house and using a dodgy gprs connection atm

I can understand the pickyness (sp?) Its known in mcog circles that the UK showings of MCoG has a few small of scenes missing or cut down, some of which is to do with violence. none of us could ever understand the Godshot from episode one being removed though.
I think FF could only get hold of the BBC masters. The nicklodeon masters were in terrible shape even more so than the BBC's which were at times shocking before the clean up process.
Dont worry I wont take your comments personally bkev, FF did the best they could with the stuff they had access too. for me being involved in the official set it was a blast and although I was involved i'm a fan more so and totally get what your saying.. theres not a lot I can say about the US release at the moment though..

Well it actually varies between the german release (which I used as a base for my version) and BBC masters as used on FF's set throughout, sometimes yes the german video is better and sometimes its certainly not.
A confession now the official set is out is that after I did my set - I ended up being involved in fabulous films official release.
if you could see the differences pre and post clean up of the video masters you'd be amazed. Yes there are sometimes issues with shimmer, colour and missing bits (the edited broadcast masters were used - its the only masters the bbc had)
I'm glad its finally out officially though. I 'm really proud of it - :)

Hai Thar!
Things are just thsimply thsuper with me thanks The Griff.
I'm basically 58 minutes into the audio and I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel, as See No Evil said it just takes a long time (and it is indeed painstaking in places) however things are changing...
Soon I may/may not be still working on it, thanks to one of my other projects some stuff has happened in recent weeks that may/may not allow me to continue with dotd. It may/may not be that I will have to pass it on to my twin brother of XiDAR Fan Projects to finish or something...if.. you.. follow.. me... I don't really know *just* yet...

Info: Halloween (2007) - workprint leaked
Time
It also shows from a technical standpoint some of the stages a film goes through before a final audience sees it, in this case alot of temp sound effect and music layers and some shot pacing (and altered shots as mentioned in the article).. as you say Moth3r very interesting but at the same time disappointing that some people in the industry leak things that perhaps they shouldn't.

RELEASED: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version)"
Time

i enjoyed the HD2DVD of the theatrical version so i am interested in seeing your version of the theatrical cut with the real theatrical sound mix. the HD version i beleive has a 5.1 which is not the theatrical version but is strangely similar yet different to the directors cut.

Really? I didnt realise the sound mix wasn't the original. Had I known I'd have done my best to fix that, oh well.

Really looking forward to this project FanFiltration, good luck with it

Feedback Wanted: Calling all people with good hearing and some knowledge in audio editing/restoration
Time
Theres digital clipping on both but theres slightly more on the 2nd track, theres a gentle 60hz hum on both tracks. I think you may have tried to boost the top end slightly with either EQ or enhancement but can't really tell much.

Suggestions

1.Flac is I assume the untouched version?, you find that its levels take a nose dive around 6khz which doesn't give you much room for sparkle,
I'd suggest instead of EQ use a very little enchancement to fake a top end with harmonics,
Notch out the 60Hz hum, this will give a clearer overall sound.
Find out if that clipping is on the source material, if it is regain to at least -6db it wont sound so nasty on peoples high quality speakers as much..
Add Sugar
Stir.

Its a tough one really, theres not quite enough there to pull a great fix but saying that - it doesn't sound too bad now through a TV speaker considering the source, personally I wouldnt go mad on the processing.

Maybe this should be moved to the technical forum, you might get more interest there?

If you can read French - If not, basically with regard to MCoG (they talk about MCoG2 funding too) they are saying the original creators now have the full rights back for the show and are working on both English and French AV remastered versions for release.
Even though it shows up on play as coming soon, they have also listed the episodes - which would have come with the release schedule, this means that somewhere something is going on. It will show on other retailers soon I'd expect.

A few options about who's releasing, Sony Music and AK video did the french releases, the BBC have their sticky beak in MCoG2 funding along with Canal +, could be the BBC I do know that at one point in the past about 3 or so years ago Contender Entertainment were looking into it but it was gonna cost too much down the food chain to be viable.
