Info Wanted: Wisdom (1986) - has anyone done a preservation project?
Time

Just wondering if there are any other fans out there of the 1986 Emelio Estevez movie Wisdom? It seems a shame to me that this is the only EE movie not available on DVD. Does anyone know if this has ever aired on any HD channel or if there are any current preservation projects for this film. It holds a place in my heart with 80’s films like Howard the Duck and Night of the Creeps which have both been swept under the rug but saved by the members of this forum. The HD2DVD converts of Howard and Creeps are fantastic, what about trying to do something with Wisdom?

I'm pretty sure that anytime you blow up or stretch an image you are going to get aliasing but here is a clip from my conversion of the few frames around that image you posted. The only filter used was the LanczosResize in order reduce loss of detail. If you used a filter like LimitedSharpen, Deen or Undot then you might reduce the aliasing slightly but you are also going to lose some of the detail in the transfer. The clip was saved in Huffyuv lossless format so that you see exactly what I see when I watch this clip. If you don't have Huffyuv installed then you'll have to download it and install it before Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic will recognize this clip.

I really need an example of the exact frame that you are looking for because if mine doesn't have the aliasing you're talking about then I won't be able to see it. If you can post an example screenshot or two of the frames your want me to post then I will be happy to do so.

Yeah, you could skip this step I just wanted TMPGEnc Plus to only have to deal with the re-encoding part of the process so I allowed VirtualDubMod to handle the resizing for the job. Also, my thoughts were that this would be a great experience for SamS to learn about frameserving as you can use it in many other instances as well. But yes, I do agree 100% that you could skip step 4 and load your .AVS file directly into TMPGEnc to reduce the complications of the process.

No problem. Sometimes simple step by step guides can be hard to locate on the vastness that is the WWW.

My step by step how to.

Tools needed: DVD Decrypter, DGIndex, AviSynth 2.5, VirtualDubMod, TMPGEnc Plus 2.5

Optional/Recommended Tools: SubRip, DVD-lab PRO

1. Use DVD Decrypter to demux the video and audio streams from your DVD. Make sure to use IFO mode, set file splitting to 'none' and select the stream processing tab. This will allow you to pick the video and audio streams that you want to demux from your DVD title. Make sure your hard drive is partitioned in the NTFS format for this because your .M2V video file could exceed the 4GB FAT32 limit.

2. Open your demuxed .M2V file with DGIndex and under the 'Video' menu set the 'Field Operation' to 'Forced Film'. Then save your project with your title of choice, STARWARS.D2V for example, and this will give you a 23.976p .D2V output file for use in step 3.

3. Create an .AVS file with Notepad like the following example.

LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\DGIndex\DGDecode.dll")
mpeg2source("C:\temp\STARWARS.D2V")
LanczosResize(720,480,0,60,720,360)

'C:\Program Files\DGIndex\DGDecode.dll' is used to decode the MPEG2 DVD source, make sure your path is correct for your PC. 'C:\temp\STARWARS.D2V' is the path to the file you created with DGIndex in step 2. Save this text file that you've created in Notepad as STARWARS.AVS.

4. Using the 'Open Video File..' command in VirtualDubMod load the STARWARS.AVS file that you created in step 3. Now you want to 'Start Frame Server...', read this excellent guide to using frameserver from VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod. My only suggestion not mentioned there is to save your file not as STARWARS.VDR but instead as STARWARS.VDR.avi so that your can then open that file in your MPEG2 encoder of choice, TMPGEnc Plus in my case. * THE FRAMESERVER MUST REMAIN OPEN AND RUNNING DURING YOUR ENCODE FOR THIS PROCESS TO WORK! *

5. Open TMPGEnc Plus and select a 'NTSC (16:9)' from the Project Wizard. You can then encode your file in TMPGEnc Plus for 16:9 enhancement. VirtualDubMod will frameserve the cropped and resized file directly to TMPGEnc in the proper 720x480 pixel size and TMPGEnc will encode for 16:9 enhancement and reduction in size to DVD5.

6. Use SubRip to extract any subtitles from your DVD if necessary.

7. Use the DVD authoring program of your choice to join your anamorphic video and audio (demuxed in step 1) as well as the optional subtitle files created in step 6 if needed. I recommend DVD-lab PRO but you probably have your own preferred DVD authoring title.

Thats the Reader's Digest version but through some reading and a little trial and error you should be able to fill in the blanks as I have given you the recipe.

Good luck.

How Lucas can satisfy the fans.
Time
For years this forum has been built upon the basis of preserving, and distributing (as much as its swept under the rug), the OOT and now that GL has given us the best available release of the OOT out there are we thanking him? No. We are slapping him in the face and accusing him of hate mongering his own product. Many members of this forum have put in long hours and received many pats on the back for releasing quality sets that, to be honest, just don't hold up anymore. In fact now seeing the sets we were all so high on in a side by side comparison with the new set shows you just how blurry and washed out many of them actually looked. None of the sets from Moth3r, Dr Gonzo, Citizen, the EditDroid group, Cowclops, DarkJedi or anyone else approaches the level of detail, sharpness or color quality that we are seeing in this new set. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not putting down any of these individuals for their work, they all did the very best they could with what was available to them and are to be commended for their efforts but their efforts have now been surpassed. I won't be throwing away my different fan editions of the OOT, such as TR47, Cowclops v2, Moth3r, ocpmovie's Classic Editions, Editdroid, DarkJedi's various releases and more, but I just don't see myself watching them anymore now that I have the definitive release to this point in terms of audio and video quality available from a retail source. That said I am still awaiting the XØ Project and look forward to something that is sure to become the defacto standard for the OOT upon its release. And it may take the release of the XØ set to get GL to release the set that everyone seems to want but I think we've done well with this one. I mean afterall, its mission accomplished, the OOT is on DVD.

** The above forum entry was not in any way intended as an attack on any of the individual members of this forum that have put in the 100's and 1000's of hours preserving the OOT. And should anyone feel offended by my remarks then please accept my apologies in advance. I respect and thank you for your efforts and hope that this new release only inspires you to loftier heights and greater acheivements. **

I agree except that I believe that we already have a good release, what we don't have is a great release. This current release met almost all my expectations other than the anamorphic video issue. The audio, picture, menus and artwork are all first rate as far as I'm concerned. Consider the fact that this came from a 10+ year old magnetic tape and that it was pretty much a straight transfer and I think we're lucky it turned out as good as it did. Do I wish it had received the Indiana Jones style cleanup and audio remastering it deserved, sure I do, but I can accept that I now have the OOT on DVD. It is made all the better considering the fact that for the last 10 years GL has told everyone that the OOT would never be available again for sale in any format, yet he relented and gave the fans what they asked for, the OOT on DVD. Did we put conditions on our request, not that I recall. We simply asked for the OOT on the digital DVD format so that it could be preserved for future generations and that is what we got. I for one am pleased and thankful to have this version that GL has released for the fans and should he see fit to ever re-release the OOT in a superior remastered edition then he'll get my money then too. I hope everyone here would join me in extending to everyone at Lucasfilm involved in bringing the OOT to DVD a heartfelt thank you. Maybe if we show a little gratitude GL will reward us the the great release the OOT deserves, until then I'll happily watch and enjoy the good release that we now have and were told we never would have.

I took a second look and at first I randomly checked shots and thought that maybe my eyes were playing tricks on my when I was doing the captures but upon going through them shot by shot here are the shots where the NTSC version shows superior PQ to the PAL version. Now this is likely only visible on still shots and in a video sequence would likely never show up but non the less the NTSC screen captures do show better contrast levels, blacks and noise/grain levels compared to the PAL shots. Here are some specific areas where I could see the difference.

- Flesh tones in the face in shot 4.
- Leia's flesh tones in shot 7.
- Black level of uniform in shot 10.
- Blacks around the eyes in shot 12.
- Blues on the two droids in shot 13.
- The hologram, no other single screenshot from any release shows the scanlines that the PAL shot shows in shot 14.
- Noisy blacks on Vader in shot 18.
- Noisy blacks in the space between Tarkin and Vader in shot 23.
- Overall black and detail level as well as noise level around the lightsaber in shot 24.
- Black levels on the droid and noise on middle of 3 wall pilars on left hand side of shot 25.
- Noisy blacks in upper left of shot 27.
- Noise level on Chewie's left bicep (dark fur area) in shot 32.
- Noisy blacks in shot 33.
- Noisy blacks in shot 35.

I stand by my statement that the NTSC provides better PQ when compared to the PAL release screenshots.

Here are all 36 comparison screen shots from the NTSC GOUT release. I used VirtualDubMod to capture the frames and saved directly to PNG format from VirtualDubMod. I took a lot of care to make sure that I got the correct frame in each case.

http://rapidshare.de/files/33161021/NTSC_GOUT_Screenshots.zip.html

Looking at these screen captures and comparing them closely to the PAL screen caps that Zion has already posted on his frame comparison page it is clear to me that the NTSC release is sharper and contains less noise than the PAL release.

I agree with this statement 100%. Now we need NTSC screenshots to find out if the increased grain/noise in the PAL release screenshots is simply from the 480 -> 576 vertical resolution upscaling. Overall though this looks like the definitive release thus far of the OOT. A nice warts and all release. I would have loved an anamorphic transfer but I am not going to complain about getting what I asked for, the OOT on DVD, FINALLY! I'll be picking up this set today, hopefully Best Buy will have some of the exclusive tin sets still available at my local store.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
I would think that asking for "extras" such as deleted scenes, bonus material and multiple audio tracks for the OUT release at this point is going to fall on deaf ears due to time constraints. The real sticking point for many of us fans is the fact that this new release will not be anamorphic but letterboxed. The demand from the fan base should be simple, we want the OUT in anamorphic widescreen, period. I, for one, am fine with the limited clean-up anouncement for the films as well as the stereo sound but I find it hard to stomach owning another release of the OUT in non-anamorphic format.

'Backstroke of the West' with retail DVD quality : FINISHED & RELEASED
Time
For those of you having trouble with RapidShare I've uploaded the how-to kit with the fixed VIDEO_TS files already in the proper folder as well as the custom cover by Erik and Ell. You can get it from MegaUpload now.

Backstroke.rar

I hope that this makes things a little easier for people trying to download the kit. For those of you still downloading from RapidShare make sure that you download the VIDEO_TS.zip file first and then the Backstroke.zip file otherwise RapidShare will make you wait 80 minutes to download the VIDEO_TS.zip file.
