The only SW film my 4-year-old has seen is ROTS, but that's only because I wanted her and my son (1 year in April) to see an SW film in a theater. (She didn't like it, thought it was too scary.)

It's been a looooooooooooooong time since I've actually sat down and just watched SW, either on LD or one of the fan-made DVDs. Unless she asks otherwise, the films she will see first will be the OT, simply because there's no way I'm ever going sit and play the PT for myself.

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

dont let him watch the prequels or special editions, that is all i would suggest

Let the kids watch the films in order. If you don't like the PT, don't watch, just let them. And just because you may have had a certain experience, doesn't mean the kids have to. Show the series 1-6 for the new generation.

Millions of people did perfectly fine watching them out of order for 30 years. George's "vision" is not definitive or final. Sorry,

Well, even if I would love the PT as much as the OT, I would still prefer to show newcomers the OT first - the PT spoils far too many surprises (the only thing that isn't spoiled is the "hyperspace jump cockpitview" woohoo!).

AWK, the same rational can be used to justify the other way to watch the films (OT and then PT). How would you feel about it, when some person would demand that your kids are to watch it in the order you do not prefer? That decision is entirely up to sikkbones, I'd say.

sikkbones, I honestly do not know at what age you should introduce starwars (in whatever order you choose) to him. It depends a lot on the kid and if it's interested in non-cartoony films already. I remember hating almost all things that weren't a cartoon or muppet thing - StarWars changed that of course.

And many have done fine being introduced to the saga through episode I. Sorry.

BUT, it gives all of those events that it spoils, an ENTIRELY new feel, and a greater emotional impact.

For the OTs, 12 years old. They should be old enough to understand everything and not miss a thing.

For the PTs, I wouldn't care, but I belive watching it before the OTs is not such a good idea. Although the once suggested order of 4-5-1-2-3-6 is interesting.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Not a bad idea after all, perhaps I'll try that sometime.

As someone who is about to be a first time parent this will be a consideration that I'll have to face as well... that said the original question here was AT WHAT AGE to introduce kids to SW and not WHICH MOVIES to choose to watch. The latter is the choice of the parent(s) just as it is with every other type of media or entertainment choice.

So... I don't see anything in the OT that is potentially harmful to a child's mind from about age 4 and up. Then again I think that might be a bit too early to get the full impact of the adventure one is seeing. I saw 'SW' on my 6th birthday and (as evidenced by my presence here) I got hooked. And the *gasp* 'slower' pacing of the OT might help kids who aren't just looking for video game-ish loud flashy images and actually want to get a feel for characters. 'Phantom Menace' would be the best, imho, of the PT for a younger child (4-6) to see. 'AOTC' and 'ROTS' probably have moments a bit too dark but then again Luke decapitating Vader in 'ESB' is a bit dark too.

So I guess stick with the more kid-friendly films like 'SW', 'ROTJ' and 'PM' to start with... baby steps into a bigger world.

New? Yes. Greater? That's your opinion, and since you've only experienced it for the first time in one particular manner, you can't say one way or the other with any authority. Sorry.

Can you? I don't understand what you mean. You originally experienced it in one particular manner as well. And over time, we've both seen it both ways, I'm sure. And the level of emotional impact is your opinion as well.

let me ask you a question.

how in the name of Jesus Christ is a 4 year old supposed to know about taxation problems, midiclhrions, bullshit complex story points in order to watch a film. my 8 year old cousin did not have a singly clue what ep1 was about, darth maul probably was the only thing he thought was cool. over all he hated ep1 and ep2. he did like ep3

If you have just watched the most complex story in the first film of a saga, how in god's name are you supposed to understand the rest?

but however he understood quite a lot of what happened in star wars, empire and jedi. knew about the force, blah blah and Empire is his favourie of the lot.

Hmmm, so you're admitting that TPM was not made for kids?

My son is one years old and has already seen most of the SW films. Not by choice mind, he's made too by his big ol daddy

Also he now does a pretty good impression of a lighsaber when holding his little toy version. He's seen me with my ForceFX, so now impersonates me with a "wiiiishhhhhh, whooooooshh" which I think is just classic. Good ol' boy

So in answer to your question, they're never too young to watch Star Wars.

Of course my opinions are not valid to anyone else. Only their opinions are valid in that case.

SLAP!

Snap out of it! How many frakking times does this same arguement have to go on in here! Get over it, Adam and MeBe. You're doing nobody any good by Finking each other.

Yes, it's just your opinion on a messageboard, Adam, but you seem to think that if people would just watch the films in order, they'd have the same opinion as you. You DON'T know any better than these parents what order they should show the movies to their kids.

MeBe, while I may agree with you, I don't always agree with your tactics. That is all.
