Almost makes me a little sad that the whole movie isn't being filmguarded. But I realise from a practical standpoint that'd be insane.

Well it looks great regardless, and it's nice that it's been "proven" you can make a really good scan out of 3rd generation prints, so Georgie is full of sh*** about not being able to. (rather he doesn't want to like some people said)

the heads and tails were the only parts on the LPP that

really needed working on..

as far as the red print i have, yeah, the whole thing would be

helped. but that was just a backup in case we needed it.

there could be a future project down the road with this,

but it's not being planned right now. we don't want to get

bogged down at this stage. and the need to get something

done and out is a lot more motivation.

Negative1, I've been thinking about your comments a while back regarding the limited dynamic range in your main print due to fading. If the red print has better dynamic range you could set up luma difference mattes for keying (one each for shadows and highlights) for each print and have the red print luma replace the other print in instances where it has better (more) information. That is, darker shadows and lighter highlights. This would eliminate the need for expanding the luma range in your main print which will introduce banding (gaps in your histogram). This approach is non-destructive but would require the black and white points and gamma to first be adjusted correctly in the red print.

Edit: Would you prefer this comment reposted in your other thread?

yeah, anything technical should go over there.

thanks for the thoughts. i'll pass it on.

i can see people are going to have a lot fun playing

around with this release once it's done.. there's quite

a bit of leeway to alter it..

negative1, a little offtopic request: do you have clean film cells which only contains grain and nothing more? There are some commercial projects regarding transfering film grain to digital and then use them as filters for digitally recorded videos. It would be amazing if you can provide us with some small samples (those official products costs hundreds of dollars).

no we do not have those types of samples.

i know what you're talking about, but we

don't use those.

Well, I mean something like http://cinegrain.com/, which can be used with digital videos to make them look like films. These are supposed to be real film grain scans, not a filter or tool which emulate it.

But don't worry, the main point of this thread is the restoration you guys are doing =)

I guess you'll have some seconds of just grain between the opening title cards (if the grain in the blacks hasn't been removed by the color correction). Of course having it on a mid-grey would be even better, since it would contain both dark and bright dirt.

actually, thinking about it now..

there are frames like that...in the raw scans.

so i guess we do have some after all, just didn't

think about how they could be used in another way.

(again, more technical things like this should be discussed

in the Technical forum, or in the general 35mm thread please)..

thanks

And, probably, archive.org :-D

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Wow, looks great negative1! And this is just a recording of the tv, and the cleanup and restoration are not even done yet. The colors are so much better than the home video versions, lush and deep, just excellent. Real 35mm film rules... :) It makes the colors of the home video versions seem like skim milk, compared to velvety rich and smooth organic whole milk, just no comparison. :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Wow, it's gonna be great to see the laser fire from that opening sequence look like it used to.  Can't wait for a screening on my projector.  YES, planning a get together with cousins when this is complete.  My son is turning 4...this is what I'll use to show him STAR WARS for the first time.

Wow. Even from these captures you can tell there's a difference from what were used too. The colours look great.

So I showed some friends. Got alot of "why not just upload the video directly?"

I said I'd ask. (did you answer this already?  My memory can be kinda weird like that)

edit: and somehow I managed to pick the wrong thread. I don't know what it is with me lately.
