The star destroyer is looking good. Tatooine has a bit better color in DL’s.

Yeah, I agree. And this is why I leave color correction to others… the planet looks quite blue in my browser (on monitor #2) but it looks fine on monitor #1 in After Effects… How it looks to you and everybody else, is probably different again. (Two of my three monitors are supposed to be well calibrated, but who knows?)

If you can get me the video of the cleaned up version in something other than an mt2s file (preferably something like an MP4) I can see if I can replicate my photoshop results in After Effects.

While yes, there may be a bit too much yellow (in the star destroyer, mostly), I think this might be about the best attempt yet.

I have FINALLY been able to buy some dual layer Blu-ray discs (I had no clue that you can’t walk into a shop and buy some), I burned it and I’m watching it right now.

A few comments (some of them were maybe addressed already, I’m sorry if I missed them) :

  • the crawl selection comes too soon, logically it would belong after selecting the “Play movie” option
  • the main menu is beautiful
  • not enough bonus features, I was surprised you didn’t include at least the stuff which came with the first mkv version. I don’t like empty space on expensive discs 😃
  • the left and right spaceship buttons should react automatically
  • do you have a raw unprocessed version of the mono mix somewhere? Whoever did the noise reduction was BRUTAL on it. Many of the voices sound very “limited”, like a horrible mp3, the same goes for a lot of sound effects. Some of the effects (e.g. Aunt Beru’s “machine” in the “Have you seen Luke this morning?” scene) are missing completely, probably it was considered to be noise. The music is heavily deformed too, mainly in the higher frequency range. Is there a chance that you still have a “raw” recording somewhere?
  • during the droid in the desert scene the video freezes for a few seconds (Cyberlink PowerDVD) and then plays like 1fps during the next few seconds

Now something positive - the video looks beautiful. I love your colour choices so far (I’m watching the Leia hologram scene right now), I love the grain, even the gentle flicker and weave are actually making the thing look like a 1977 film. There are some problems, but they’re so minor that they’re not worth mentioning and I think I was way too critical 😃

Thank you very much for your hard work (that goes to all people involved), I still can’t believe that within 13 years I went from trying to find a replacement for my crappy 4:3 VHS to having a wonderful 1080p scan of a theatrical print. Thanks again.

Thanks Pittrek, we appreciate the feedback! Glad you are enjoying it.

To address your specific observations:

  • I looked at a few retail seamless branching discs and noted that they all made the user select the branch as soon as the disc was loaded. For example Aliens Theatrical vs Special Edition pops up almost immediately, and Star Wars invites you to pick the language before proceeding to the main menu. So that was my reason for putting the choice there. Also, I had prepared 2 versions of the main menu and this gave me a way to use both. Another option I toyed with was to randomly choose a menu background.

  • I was fortunate to have some help creating the menu backgrounds - while I added the Star Wars montage and the menu functionality, the actual backgrounds behind them were created entirely by Donny Versiga (http://rigel7studios.blogspot.com/).

  • I would have liked to add a bunch of new Bonus features but I didn’t have any handy, and I really didn’t feel like creating any more menu pages. Plus, you are only allowed 16 MB of memory for the menu, and I was already using 14 MB so adding another page may have pushed it over the limit. (Originally I had only 5 chapter images per page, for a total of 10 scene selection pages, but that used 23 MB and the project would not build. It took weeks to re-do it all! Weeks that might have been spent working on new Special Features. Don’t worry, though, when Team Blu gets around to doing the next version of Star Wars, there will be a bunch of new Special Features to share.)

  • You might be right about the space ship buttons.

  • Ironically I only have a 128 kb/s MP3 version of the pre-noise Reduction mono mix capture, so I went with the WAV which had already had the NR applied. As I’ve said before, I’m not an audiophile but as far as I could tell the only difference was the background hiss… If you would like to hear the pre-noise reduction MP3 you can download it from here:

https://mega.nz/#!N5h3xTib!kZSkEIXAtybQ7b8lUdGKsowky1ARMu607RGmZgPdUvA

I should point out that the MP3 is not GOUT sync’d…

  • I did not experience any issues with the droids in the Desert, did anyone else have that issue? You said you are using PowerDVD, perhaps your PC was just busy doing something else for a few seconds at that point?

Thanks for the replies.
So, the mono mix sounds like a low bitrate mp3 because it was source from an mp3? 😃 Thanks for the link, I’ll get it asap.
There is a very strange thing with the “We seem to be made to suffer” shot - I tried it 3 times, and 3 times it behaved the same as I wrote. I closed PowerDVD and re-opened it. I played it again and the scene now plays correctly. Weird, but it was definitely a problem on my side.

So, after watching the whole Blu-ray I have to again say THANKS ! I loved it, I was actually excited during the trench battle sequence and DS destruction, which I found hard by watching the DVD/official BD versions

No, I was given a lossless WAV file which had already had Noise Reduction applied, and the “Raw” MP3. I don’t believe for a second that it was captured as an MP3 at 128 KB/s. I’m sure it was captured as PCM, and if I had asked for it I could have used that instead, but all I would have done would be apply a noise reduction using Adobe Audition by sampling the hiss, which probably would have been worse, so I just went with what they gave me.

It’s a shame that you weren’t given the raw audio as PCM. It would be useful for future work on the mono mix. I’m sure that someone will want to work on it, and I’ve read a few comments suggesting that the noise reduction might have had some negative effects.

I don’t think that there’s any getting away from the yellow in the star destroyer without making Tatooine too blue, unfortunately.

Unless one were to mask around the elements to adjust the colors independent of each other, which is commonly done in situations like this in professional restorations, but may go against the spirit of this project.

I don’t think it is against the spirit of the project. Recompositing elements from the bluray would be, but here we are just talking about isolating elements and color correcting them independently.

I mean I can certainly do that in after effects if you’d like. It would definitely produce something more pleasing to the eye. I just figured you’d prefer the whole frame corrected together for the sake of purity or something haha.

After gathering a bunch of references, it looks as if the earliest examples of the film have a greenish tint to them. I actually had to reduce the green of the bootleg to balance the colors somewhat:
Comparison
And here’s the attempt with a single set of adjustments:
Green and pink
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/176880
And with slightly less yellow:
Less Yellow

Finally one that has less green in the shadows:
Less Green

I have no idea which one is more correct.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
