natedeug’s The Last Jedi Polished Edition

I found The Last Jedi to be a pleasant surprise. It managed to be its own movie, shucking expectations in favor of actually telling a new story while still maintaining the feeling of the originals. The problems I had with it were minor, and now that we have access to the deleted scenes, I decided to see what my personal perfect cut of the movie would look like.

I used Pilusmagnus’s Extended Edition (available over in the FanEdit.org forums) as a base, which included the following additional deleted scenes:
• Luke mourns Han, and Leia feels his pain through the Force. A shot of Leia from later in the film is used for this.
• Poe gives Finn his jacket back and boasts about saving the entire fleet before being slapped by Leia
• BB8 shows Finn a recording of Rey, prompting him to desert the ship and find her
• Additional shots of the Caretakers being angry at Rey
• New Caretaker village sequence
• New infiltration sequence aboard the Supremacy with Ralph Ineson and Tom Hardy cameos

From these additions, I was able to make the following cuts:
• Cut the Poe/Hux exchange at the beginning
• Cut the second doughy eyed porg when Chewie sits down for a meal
• Cut BB-8 spinning around to get Finn’s attention before showing him the recording of Rey
• Cut a bit of Maz’s communication, no more gun stroking and fawning over the codebreaker
• Cut casino character using BB-8 as a slot machine
• Cut BB-8 being tossed out of casino
• Cut BB-8 using coins as bullets
• Cut a few shots of the fathier escape, trimming the time we spend with them in the casino and on the streets
• Cut Rey asking if Ben can put on a cowl or something
• Cut clothes iron “landing scene”, now cuts from mutiny to deleted infiltration scene
• Cut exchange between Stormtrooper and Finn in the elevator
• Holdo says “May the force be with you, always” without the cute back and forth
• Cut Rose taking way too long to duck behind cover
• Cut BB-8 controlled AT-ST running through wreckage
• Cut Finn saying “Oh, they hate that ship!”
• Cut second shot of porg yelling in Millennium Falcon when running through Crait’s caves
• Cut Ben giving order to open fire on speeders and Hux’s overenthusiastic echo
• Cut Luke’s dirt-off-your-shoulder moment
• Movie ends on Falcon in hyperspace
• Moved children telling the legend of Luke Skywalker to after the credits

My edit is not HD; my little laptop can only handle so much. Instead, this edit suits my needs and is of a fair quality. I’m more interested in getting these ideas out there to the community. Perhaps someone else will pick up on the little things I’ve done.

DVD5 & DVD9 iso’s now available.

I would be curious to see this as well! The DVD quality would be fine for me personally since I use that quality for my Plex server … the playback is too choppy for my home setup. I like a lot of the choices you have going on!

this is similar to the type of edit i will be doing (in time) id love to have a look at it.

Well I’ve made the amateur’s mistake of counting my chickens before they hatch. Having problems with encoding (encoder won’t recognize the audio track for some reason) and the export file from lightworks is too big to upload. I’ll have to take another crack at this when I get a chance.

Hey there, I can’t seem to find this edition anywhere. In fact I can’t even find Pilusmagnus at all on fanedit.org.

Is there another keyword I should be searching for? If I look up Jedi in the fanedit.org search it doesn’t have anything beyond 2017.

It’s currently on page 2 of the In the Works section of the forum. If you aren’t registered at the fanedit.org forum yet, you might not be able to access that section.

Thank you for that.

Finished, and now have a DVD9 iso file. I’m pretty happpy with the result.

So far the only real problem I have with it is the audio transition from the fathier stables to the casino, which I’m working on fixing now. But I also realize that it’s not up to the quality of some of the other editors around here.

Nice edits. I did a similar one for the fathier escape (smash-cutting to the teacup), but did it a bit earlier when Rose looks like she’s hatching a plan, so as to remove the children.

I think a lot of people will be using the teacup to shorten the fathier chase.

I was also curious as to how you scored the “Luke Mourning” scene. The existing score in the deleted scene is used verbatim in the Jedi Library scene not long afterward and I want to try and avoid the repetition.

The score for Luke mourning is taken directly from Pilusmagnus’s expanded edition over on fanedit.org.

I would be curios to see your clip.

For this one, which I commented on another thread, there needs to be the addition of the kid looking up and smirking at the Fathier to THEN go to the teacup. From the sounds of it the music/sound timing is the issue … but someone with some skill could probably do that.

I’ll probably upload some of my stuff in the “Ideas” thread at some point.

Yeah, the issue is that the lounge piano (“The Long Goodbye”) cross-fades with audio from the previous shot, so the first note isn’t usable. I just cut in a second later and it still works pretty well, but I’m trying to find a way to restore that first piano note.

I had an idea for the “Stormtrooper in Elevator” scene. If you let it play out a few seconds more, there’s a closeup of Rose, then DJ, then BB8 who makes a funny sound, then you could hard cut to them walking out of the elevator. I think that might play up the humor of the scene a bit more.

Just my two cents.

Also, where in the film are you inserting the “Elevator” scene? I couldn’t figure out a good place to put it.

Here are three more clips:

Revised Canto Bight Escape:
-I feel like I initially took too much out of the chase, and a better transition from stables to casino.

Stormtroopers in elevator:
-I liked the deleted infiltration scene, but that western accent on the stormtrooper (not to mention the slap-ass moment) were too much.

Crait - no ship hating, one less porg shot, no Hux echo:
-Just what it says.

Canto - Looks good to me.

Stormtroopers - I think that should be drawn out more. The reason is that added tension gets lost. I believe it was Hal (I could be wrong) who used the deleted scene and drew it out until the stormtrooper cocked his head and looked at Finn a bit. THEN it transitioned to them getting of the elevator. It adds the drama and seriousness of their mission. It pays off better that way.

Crait - Looked smooth to me!

The thing about the southern Stormtrooper scene is that, with a bit of searching, better dialogue could be inserted easily after removing Tom Hardy’s jokey lines. Since all you need is dialogue that intimidates Finn, you could theoretically have the trooper say anything. It doesn’t have to be recognition, it could be something like “Officer, is there something the matter?” and a single line from Jon Boyega saying “…No.”

With the right music cue and timing it’d work great.

If someone could pull that off, yeah that’d be really excellent.

Were you able to get a decently clean version of that logo somewhere? I tried a while back but settled for my own crappy cutout attempt.
