Who here studies a martial art, and which one(s) do you study.

I study Kendo and Iaido (Japanese Swords for those that dont know of them). Anyone else here study these?

I SPENT TEN YEARS STUDYING NINJUTSU AND I ALSO STUDIED JUJITSU WHEN I WAS IN POLICE ACADEMY. I STOPPED NINJUTSU, BECAUSE I CAME EXTREMELY CLOSE TO KILLING THREE PEOPLE JUST OUT OF REFLEX ONE OF THEM BEING MY FATHER. NOW I TEACH SWORD PLAY TO MY DAUGHTER, SON, AND THIER FRIENDS. MY SON, WHO IS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD, HAS ALREADY SHOWN GREAT TALENT WITH A SWORD. HE RIVALS MY SEVEN YEAR OLD GIRL. I'M ALSO TEACHING MY LITTLE GIRL JUJITSU.

I studied Kenpo for a few years, but had to give it up when I moved to the Midwest (there are no Kenpo dojos here that I've seen). Haven't picked up on any martial arts since then. But have wanted to.

I'VE BEEN READING "THE ZEN TEACHING OF HUANG PO ON THE TRANSMISSION OF THE MIND." IT WAS LAST PUBLISHED IN 1958, SO IT'S A LITTLE HARD TO COME BY THESE DAYS. THE TEACHINGS COME FROM HUANG PO CH'UAN HSIN FA YAO DURING THE NINTH CENTURY. OUT OF ALL OF THE BOOKS IN MY PERSONAL LIBRARY THIS ONE IS THE MOST REQUESTED FOR LOAN-OUTS.

I took Tae Kwon Do for about 5 years, but stopped after reaching black belt. I just sort of lost interest, I guess

My friend has tought me a bit of fencing, enough to lay the smackdown on most newbies at least.

But I don't think that is considered a Martial Art.

Never trained in any fighting technique...well, in 8th grade I enrolled in an after-school wrestling program put on my the assistant principal, but we had one class, then something came up (don't know what) and we never continued.

If I were to get into a fight, I'd use anything and everything at my disposal. To quote, of all things, the movie The Happiest Millionaire:

I practice kung fu for some time now. I did some wushu, but now I focus on north shaolin style and sanshou. I'm in the process of moving to another town, but I'll keep doing it over there, as soon as I get things in order and settle down.

An ad came up on the bottom of the page for Elasticsteel.com "achieve full splits, high kicks, flexibility and elasticity."

Good to know those google ads do work.

I did a lot of reading on Bruce Lee and Jeet Kun Do, and also have "The Tao of Jeet Kun Do". I've never studied formally, but have always been a believer in the art of "whatever works best". If you lock yourself into a particular style someone with adequate knowledge can eat you alive.

Also, in this day and age, in actual fights, outside of a dojo, people have a tendency to not play by the rules. Too many people carry weapons, and Lee said it best, "...against somebody with a weapon, you are at a disadvantage". Best defense is to not get into a fight, at all costs.

Yeah, and as I was looking at the Google ads, right between "Martial Arts Training" and "Martial Arts Insurance" was "Darth Vader Lightsaber". What good martial artist would ever be without his lightsaber?

THE MOST PRACTICLE FORM OF MARTIAL ARTS IN MY OPINION IS JUDO WHICH IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE "WRESTLING" FORM OF MARTIAL ARTS. THIS IS WHAT IS TAUGHT AT POLICE ACADEMIES.

I took nine years of TaeKwonDo until finally a combination of leaving for college/losing interest/running out of money caused me to quit.

The most PRATICAL form of martial art is the Krav Maga. It's straight to the point, and is also taught in many police academies around the world. You won't get good phisical results with it and you won't be able to demonstrate it or use it in competitions, but it gets the job done. The most COMPLETE form of martial arts is the shaolin-derived traditional kung fu form, as you'll get to "improve" your mind, your energy flow, your concentration, your phisical shape, your strenght, flexibility, everything.

All forms become moot against someone with a weapon capable of killing quickly, ie: firearms, knives, etc.
