Superman II and Superman III extended (Released)

OK I know this is off topic but I was wondering. I have a copy of the extended Superman II and Superman III movies and I was wondering if someone would like to put these to DVD. I could do it myself but I don’t have the time or expertise to do it well. So if anyone is interested, Email me at:

jayburks@hotmail.com

I also have a copy of Superman 1 that is a “composite” of the the laserdisk along with all the scenes from various extended sources but a friend of mine has it and I need to get it back.

All I want in return is a couple of copies on DVD of these. You can keep the tapes.

I know there's the "Restored International Cut" of Superman II that I believe Rikter is going to torrent eventually, but I never knew that extended versions of Superman I and especially Superman III existed. I'd be interested in seeing them, alas I cannot help with transferring to DVD. Good luck in your quest.

The extended Supes I is the one of the DVD I believe.

There was a time in the UK, that the only version of Superman 3 shown on TV was the extented version.

Last time I saw it on TV, I'm sure they cut out the line "...or a hairdryer?" after the supposedly dumb blonde recognises the circuit diagram as a computer. Anyone else remember that line or am I imagining it?

There is a LOT more footage to Supes I than even was released in the Director's Cut. I remember it used to be a four-hour movie on TV. I remember staying up until something crazy like 3 a.m. catching it on the late show with my folks back when I was in college. If you know how old and fuddy my parents are, you'd be amazed.

Anyway, a LOT of stuff was in there. I'd love to see it again.

I'm sure most of us know the story about what happened to these films. Especially 1 and 2. From what I hear, the Brando footage from Supes 2 is being used in this new Superman movie, as this is supposed to be the LEGIT Superman 3.

I wish they would piece Richard Donner's version of Superman II back together than use the footage of Brando for the new one. IIRC, the making of documentary gives a glimpse of the only scene Reeve and Brando had together being shot.
How good is the video quality of the Superman extended cut? I have a first generation of it on Beta, but it refuses to track properly (must have been recorded on some off brand/mutant betamax!) and I've hit a dead end with it.

There are major legal issues of a Donner Superman 2 cut, because to do it, they would have to remove ALL footage he did not shoot. The DGA does not allow for their to be two directors on a film.

I do plan on posting as these DVD's as torrents over the next 2-6 months -

Most of these are VHS to DVD transfers and they are NOT the best in quality and I will do my best to post some VOB samples (NOT screen captures - unless you watch the movie frame by frame ) over the next week or some before I post the first release which will most likely be Superman (1978) - "The KCOP Television" Version.

QUESTION for Superman fans > Is the KCOP television a composite with both widescreen and fullscreen segments? I ask as the copy that I got has both and it was marked KCOP disc 1 and 2 when the trade came in.

For the Angrysun Releases marked BLAKRYPTO - I did not capture these but I've added matching menus and DVD-rom folders to each disc - most of these were sourced from VHS with a Set-top DVD recorder and they have no known creators as they are generational VHS copies (in some cases 4th maybe 5th gen copies)

Superman (1978) - "The Theatrical Television" Version
- Angrysun Release BLAKRYPTO-01
- 2 DVDr
- Fan Preservation
- Source - TiVo Series 2 to DVD extraction of AMC Satellite broadcast
- Widescreen

Superman (1978) - "The KCOP Television" Version
- Angrysun Release BLAKRYPTO-02 A/B
- 2 DVDr
- Fan Preservation
- Source - 3rd or 4th generation VHS recording of OTA broadcast OR Fan composite
- Basic Menu
- Fullscreen/Widescreen composite

Superman II (1980) - "Restored International Cut"
- 2 DVDr
- Fan Preservation
- Source - VHS recording of OTA broadcasts, Official NTSC and PAL VHS tapes
- Interactive Menus
- Fullscreen

Superman III (1983) - "The Extended Television" Version
- Angrysun Release BLAKRYPTO-03
- 1 DVDr
- Fan Preservation
- Source - 2nd or 3rd generation VHS recording of OTA broadcast
- Basic Menu
- Fullscreen

Superman IV (1987) - "The International" Version
- Angrysun Release BLAKRYPTO-04
- 1 DVDr
- Fan Preservation
- Source - 2nd or 3rd generation VHS recording of OTA broadcast
- Basic Menu
- Fullscreen

Now - I'm waiting for these to come in in trade... BUT I really don't think that they are coming anymore as it seems to be a trade gone bad... (so If you got em' let's trade )

Superman (1978) - "The International Salkind" Version
Superman II (1980) - "The International Salkind" Version
Superman II (1980) - "Green Cut" Version

The quality is OK but it's a few gens old. I have 2 betatape players I could try on mine if interested. I could at least get it captured. I'm no good at cleaning up video that's why I've asked outside sources. If interested, Let me know.

I'm pretty sure my copy was taped off an ABC station when the movie first aired on "free tv" in the early 80's. Anybody out there with an industrial strength betamax who wants to take a shot at getting it to play properly?

Rikter,
Any possible way I could get some copies of these dvds off of you? I'd love to check them out and see if my quality is any better. Would be happy to trade you for some other dvds. (I have hundreds of RARE DVDs) Let me know.

Thanks,
Jay

I highly recommend the restored international cut DVD of Superman II. I have a copy of it, and it has the soundtrack, making of, and subtitles that can pop up onscreen noting who shot what.

Superman II (1980) - "Restored International Cut"
Running Time: 146 min - This project began as a fan edit - The hope was to recut the film to make it feel more like Donner's "Superman the Movie." Before work could seriously begin, the extended TV broadcasts needed to be acquired to include some of those great Donner moments that didn't make it into the theatrical cut.

There would always be those hard-core fans that would want to see everything. So with the support of fans and friends from around the globe, the fan edit was put aside, and the business of restoring the entire film began. It took about 2 years to acquire the footage, and make it watchable, but the results were less than satisfying. The word once again went out for extended broadcasts, and both Bill Williams and Jonathan Hoyle answered the call. The choice wasn't easy, but after a lot of scrutiny, Bill's footage was the actual source chosen to improve RIC. But special thanks to Jonathan for sending his original master as well.

It's been said many times, this film will never win any quality awards. The footage supplied came from home recordings. So anyone expecting amazing detail and clarity will be sorely disappointed. But if you've seen any version of the extended broadcasts, you'll probably appreciate the way it's presented here. Great care has been taken to make the film as watchable as possible, no commercials, no subtitles, no station ID's. Thanks to the generous help of a very talented individual, even the audio got a polishing as well.

The final two disc RIC DVD set contains:

- The complete two hour, twenty-six minute version of the film.
- On-screen commentary track, detailing what footage Donner shot, and other RIC trivia.
- Long out of print documentary "The Making of Superman II."
- Long out of print "Superman II Soundtrack."
- "Lost Scene Gallery" - features pictures of Donner's unreleased work on Superman II.
- "Restoration Demonstration" - features before and after footage samples.
- Complete RIC artwork folder with printable Cover and Disc art in TIFF file format.

- 2 DVDr
- Fan Preservation
- Source - VHS recording of OTA broadcasts, Official NTSC and PAL VHS tapes
- Interactive Menus
- Fullscreen

I'm not informed when it comes to the specs of the Superman DVD releases. I'm told that the "Making of" for Superman II isn't on the official releases, but I'm not sure about Superman I. Is that "Making of" available on the DVD at all?

I have the Making of Superman I & II, hosted by Christopher Reeve on NTSC DVD.

I also have the Making of Superman III (60 minutes) which was never released on video I guess. I have it on a PAL DVD. The source is a good PAL Beta SP.

Maybe it will interest some of you that I post it on Myspleen.

Please post the Making of 3 at least (I think the Making ofs for 1 and 2 will be on the DVDs Rikter uploads). It sounds like a rare find.

a few months ago, I saw some rare behind the scenes footage of Superman IV, especially for what become a deleted fight scene between the first nuclear man and Superman. But the footage has never been edited in a documentary form. Only the dailies exist today.

I have the making of specials of 1 and 2 on separate discs for the best quality possible. I'd be more than happy to post those. Unfortunately, I don't have the making of 3.

I also have the international cuts of 1 and 2 as well. 2 discs each.
