Editing Notes From Cowclops:

Hooked up the s-video out on a Pioneer Elite CLD-59 Laserdisc player to a Sony Digital8 camcorder with analog in. Recorded the video to DV format by way of the camcorder, and used firewire to digitally transfer the video into the computer. From there, used several rograms to filter out the noise from the laserdisc. Then, encoded the video to DVD format with CinemaCraft Encoder SP. Finally, authored the DVD with DVDit PE and wrote it to a Ritek 2x DVD-R with a Pioneer DVR-104 drive using Nero.

Glitches/Errors/Oddities/Nuked:

  • ESB has 4 seconds of blank screen before Leia welding footage (At 50m 31s), ROTJ - on some DVD players there MAY be a slight stutter when a speeder bike explodes due to a bitrate jump.

  • Randomly selected Chapter Stops/Markers that do not match the original LD chapters

Editing Notes From Cowclops:

ON FILTERS: I realized that there is no way to really eliminate the noise without trading it off for smearing in the moving scenes or loss of detail everywhere, so on the new set I used noise reduction that is actually stronger (because it searches more frames at a time to decide what the noise free version is) but it is applied in full strength less often. What this means is that in the most still scenes, you get near perfect noise reduction, but as soon as you get any movement the entire frame basically reverts to the sharp, but noisy image. What it really means is that you don’t get anywhere near as much smearing because no real noise reduction is being applied to the moving scene, PLUS since its moving you’re less likely to be able to focus on any noise ANYWAY. This goes back to the whole reason some still frames may not look that great… if you freeze frame something that isn’t perfectly still, you’ll see the noise and it won’t look that pretty, but in motion your eyes won’t be able to follow it anyway.

Mind you, I didn’t manually do this on a scene by scene basis, just decided on an overall setting once and used it for all 3 movies. When I say its “applied less often” it means that the algorithm that decides whether to apply noise reduction or not to any individual portion of a frame kicks in less frequently.

ON SUBTITLES: Basically, heres what I did. The subtitles are in the black bars in the laserdisc version of the movies. When I cropped some of the black bars off to turn it into an anamorphic ratio DVD, I didn’t lose any of the subtitles, and I wanted to leave the originals in so as to stick with the “Definitive Collection LD-on-DVD” motif. Since they are still fully there on the disc, you can see them just fine on any 4:3 display and probably all 16:9 digital projectors or most specifically anything that doesn’t overscan the video. CRT-based 16:9 sets (projection or not) still have some overscan, however. Sooo, on these TVs you may not be able to see the subtitles at all, because erasing some of the black moved the subtitles out of the “safe-title” area as they call it. To compensate for that, I made it so you can turn on dvd-software subtitles of the same lines that will not appear in the overscan area, and in most DVDs should actually occupy the video frame itself. This way, those who can see the LD subtitles don’t have to worry about anything, and those who can not see the LD subtitles can turn on the software encoded DVD subtitles. The bottom line is, if you’re still using a display that overscans the video, you better hope it overscans the LD subtitles all the way or you might see a subtitle and a half. I suspect the people using analog 16:9 sets are in the minority, however. Most people probably watch on a PC monitor, a 4:3 tv, or 16:9 digital projection.

Glitches/Errors/Oddities:

  • After Selecting “Chapter Selection” there is no return to main button so you must select a chapter
  • Has double black bars so you’ll need to adjust the black level on your set (brightness) to make them kinda go away but then the picture also gets darker… so you may have to change the levels again for TV viewing.

The Extras discs

The 4 “Supplemental” discs that have been distributed with this set are NOT official, exclusive or limited to the “Cowclops” set.

Forum member Rowman was originally inspired to created these particular DVD’s to compliment the “EditDroid” set (the menus were made to match) BUT this set is a PERFECT addition to ANY set be it the COWCLOPS, EDITDROID, FARSIGHT or ISOMIX sets!!

I’ll make a thread that features ROWMAN’s discs in just a few days!!

Is there an official site to purchase this set? Or is it on Ebay...only because I don't know the difference between the Ebay sets, and this is the one the interests me the most.

Don't get it from Ebay or they will rip you off. Look around on these threads for Rikters email if you want them.

My set DOES contain the Leia welding footage, there is simply a 4 second gap beforehand. You mistakenly wrote, "There are no known AVAILABLE versions transfered from the LATER Corrected Definitive set AS OF YET!", which is false. Please verify your info before posting. BTW, thanks for starting this thread; due to some concerns I had, I was not willing to do this myself.

Darth Justin, im not sure how strict the new rules are for this thread, so ill just say to PM people. Notably Rikter, TR47, or anyone else who seems to have a clue. Uh, thats not supposed to be mean at all.

I can say that im very impressed with the TR47 dvd+r(s) They play on all my DVD players so far (PS2, computer, and a Phillips DVD/receiver). I was really taken by suprise with the visuals. I didnt expect it to be as bright or detailed. I dont know why, too much '95 Faces version I guess. I dont think that the difference in the '04 versions is SIGNIFICANT on the visual basis alone. I mean, it looks clean and clear, but the TR47 looks great IMO.
The sound is great, as expected. The lack of menus is so minor, that I dont think I even thought twice - haha, after I asked Rikter cause I wanted to make sure it wasnt my PS2 (I hadnt tried it on the other players yet). Printing your choice of covers, and(if you choose) disc covers, really makes the whole thing feel like an accomplishment. They look great on my shelf, and better on my tv

Long live the OT

Okay - this is my review of the TR47 set...

This is most likley the BEST set that is out right now IMHO ~ The Transfer is first rate, The audio is just about STOOPID COOL - NO set has audio this clean and sweet (YET!) it is a bit louder than most of the sets that are out but it is wonderful!! - The Black Levels could be a bit better but I use a video processor when I veiw or screen the set for friends on my projector

Here's a picture for you to check out - I used my PC for playback so I had an RGB connection not S-Video

94 inches of TR47 greatness!!
http://home.comcast.net/~newmexicoufo/94_inch_SW.JPG

I play it back with an Onkyo TX-SR501 with DTS NEO6 processing of the LPCM audio ~ It also sounds SUPER SWEET with Dolby Pro-Logic II but I do preffer the DTS

It took me a while to get a working set but man the wait was worth it!!!!

NOW to the extras discs...

There is a lot of content on these discs. BUT most of the features are televison clips and other "internet" type stuff - IT's REALLY neat but the discs have extra NON-TRILOGY features that the really have no place in a "Definitive Collection". DON'T get me wrong they are AWESOME Discs and feature some of the trailers, the alternate and cut scenes from SW, the WOW! laserdisc demo the making of Documentaries. Again these are a nice addition to any Star Wars Fan's collection but they are not a must.

AGAIN - I'm not talking down to this set or the creators of the set it just has a lot of things like clips from "The 70's Show" and "The Simpsons" for me it's just a bit much for my TR47 boxset!

When the TR47 set sits along side my "Blaksvn" 6 disc "Making The Trilogy Collection" it makes for one of the MOST complete sets EVER!!!!

The TR47 DVDR set is Awesome, the movies look and sound GREAT. This 4 second gap is no big deal at all, the movie flows just fine. All 3 movies play great on all 4 of my DVD players with no problems at all. The movie just starts to play when you put it in, no menus to take up valuable space, dont need menus to watch the movie anyway. I have the 7 disc set and extras are awesome. These have nice menus.

I got my 7 DVD Ultimate Set from TR47 a while back and I´m really pleased with them. I only got them after I had extensively researched which transfer offered the best picture and sound quality and this transfer is still the benchmark for MeBeJedi, Zion and Laserman to improve upon. I am obviously exited about those new transfers especially since they come from the 95 Faces THX set which is supposed to be a bit different from the Definitive Edition laserdisc. But until I am 100% convinced that a better bootleg is available I will stick happily with my TR47 versions as they offer the best possible DVD solution bar those awful official "Extra Extra Special Read All About It Tinkered & Meddled With Super Editions" which are now available. I will not buy those, absolutely not folks.

I wanted to take an opportunity to provide a bit of completion to this thread, as well as let the forum know of a small update as to the new set's progress. This is what was used for the current set:

Pioneer CLD-59 Elite
Transferred via firewire into a Sony DV Cam (DV format video, which is why there is a slight red shift)
Ported to PC, where noise and anti-aliasing filters were applied
CCE used for making the discs

Keep in mind this set is over 2 years old-at the time at which it was made, it was the best that could be done given the knowledge and equipment possessed.

The new transfer will be done with a Pioneer CLD-97, so noise filters will not have to be applied as the S/N ratio is the lowest of any US made model. I have seen a short test sample and it looks FAR better than the current set-I was astonished at the clarity. At this point, a DVD5 set is going to be made first as DVD9 discs are still at least 6-12 months away from being feasible for usage. It will have menus and the same PCM audio track, but will likely not be very different than the current set other than the quality increase. All 3 widescreen LD sets ('89 with corrected '92 rerelease, '93 DC and '95 Faces) will be used to ensure maximum possible quality. The knowledge gained in the last 2+ years will enable the set to have correct color balance this time, as well as being sharper and cleaner looking. Anamorphic video is one of the goals, but I am not sure quite yet. This is all very early in the stages of production, so please don't ask me for more details.

- Sounds good m8, real good. You be sure to keep us informed on the progress. It will be interesting to see how much of an improvement this new set will provide over your already excellent set which still holds up quite well today despite the age of the transfer. And do try to make it anamorphic too, because most people´s zoom features are not as good as when it´s done with a computer. Dual layer is the way to go as well so we can have the least amount of compression on these classic movies. Good luck m8!

Eh, the DVD-9s are still too unpredictable as far as compatibility goes...plus, as has been pointed out repeatedly, there's only so much that can be done to the LD source. I believe someone here actually tried the DVD-9s for an LD rip a few weeks or months ago, and found very little difference in the video.

The set is good though, better than than the last existing original VHS box set, but obviously not quite up to the '04 restoration quality. The audio is still top rate, and easily the best feature of the set. The best solution I still think is going to be one or many of the in-progress DE-SE versions being worked on now.

My seven-dvd set arrived Friday. I just finished watching Star Wars and ESB ... along with the SW bonus DVD (great menu, by the way). I'm taking a break before Return of the Jedi.

I've tears in my eyes right now ... no, not from watching the TV for five hours. My husband (not a terribly big Star Wars fan) is laughing at me for it ... but I can't tell you how wonderful it is to see these films in this form again. Since he's the man with the online funds, he ordered the DVDs for me (though I wish he'd grabbed the Holiday Special, dammit ... he didn't think we'd need it since we have an old video). He doesn't mind the Special Editions, but he understood why I refused to buy the new DVD release (which I have seen .... I just won't buy it).

I never owned a LaserDisc player. My videos are from the 80's and they're full-screen. So this is actually the first time I've seen the untainted Star Wars films widescreen since I saw them in the theatre back in the day. And because my original videos are in such a sorry state, I haven't watched these movies in their original form since right before the Special Edition was released (which I also have on video).

After two lackluster prequels and the horrible CGI tampering of the original films, I can finally resume loving these films again. This set has completely reminded me why I fell in love with these films ... it's been so hard to enjoy what Lucas has done to Star Wars in the past seven years. So thank you, TR47.

The quality of the DVD transfers is excellent. If I never obtained another Star Wars DVD set, I'd be completely satisfied with this presentation. And the extras are superb ... they really take me back.

Yes, my ESB has a slight black pause before the welding scene ... I couldn't care less. The DVDs play fine on both of my DVD players ... my crappy player didn't even hesitate to play these (and it's about 50/50 in playing VCDs and DVDRs). The set is perfect ... it's everything I'd hoped for and then some. You've treated these films with a respect that Lucas is incapable of.

And let me also say that, as someone who's worked for low-budget "foreign" video/DVD distributors, the effort you've put into this presentation is commendable. The TLC makes it something special. I wish some of my previous collaborators put half the effort into their final products that you've devoted to these Star Wars DVDs.

Again, thank you so much TR47 ... you've made a grown woman cry. Thank you for making these available.

I got a copy of this set last week. I'm quite impressed. I was quite surprised that the discs work on my Playstation2! Some criticism: Even on my very small 4:3 TV the picture quality has a slight jagged look of horizontal aliasing, and the frame rate doesn't seem very smooth. But I attribute that to the fact that my PAL TV and Playstation2 are broadcasting the picture in NTSC. There is probably a loss of quality when my PAL TV snaps into its secondary NTSC mode that it wasn't really designed for. But apart from that, I find the picture to be a little better than VHS, which is all I need.

Oh, one more tiny criticism. The most annoying thing about the picture is that bright red things are pixellated. It's weird how compression algorythms always make red stuff very pixellated, like in jpg photos. I hope that gets fixed for TR47's 2.0 versions.

I have one question about the lifespan of burned DVD discs. How long do they last? Because I've heard that CD-Rs only have a lifespan of approximately 3-6 years before the ink starts to run, and I assume DVD-R is the same? Still, I shouldn't worry -- in the years it will take to degrade, I'll finally get a better computer and my own DVD burner, and just re-tranfer them.

The aliasing you noticed is because the discs don't conform sttrictly to the DVD specification. I have the same problem if I'm using my DVD player in "PAL mode" (which means it uses PAL-60 instead of NTSC for NTSC movies, this makes the picture look better than using NTSC). AFAIK PS2's can only do the one format - ie PAL/PAL-60 but not NTSC. Which could be why you notice the aliasing. I noticed the same thing on a friend's brand new player, so I changed it from "PAL" to "AUTO" and again it was fixed.

Hey, I would love to get a TR47 version with menus, but damn it takes weeks to download something with bittorrent, is it imposibble to download some kind of update? to patch the old version or I'm i dreaming? And also if someone has the resources could someone setup an irc server for faster downloads? that would be great since there people can use their connection speeds to a full and don´t have to worry about how many seeders, leechers there are. I don't know if it just me but on bittorrent i get a maximum of 15kbs if I'm lucky. It would be great but i´m probably asking to much.
I wish I had a Kryptonite cross, because then you could keep both Dracula AND Superman away.

Just a question about the new DVDs: Do they have JACKET_P pictures and do they have DVD-Text?

JACKET_P pics are the pictures that are displayed by some players when you press stop on the DVD. Most Sony players show them. Also if you have a DVD changer/jukebox they usually show a small picture for the DVD's that have them.

DVD Text is the text displayed on the LCD of a standalone player. It shows the title of the movie. Not all players support it.

It is a simple process to add them both. The jacket pictures don't take up much room and there would be room to add them. You simply put another folder on the DVD called JACKET_P with 3 specially formatted MPGs on it (along with the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS files). For DVD text you use a freeware program called titlewriter.

If you like I can make the files and email them to someone (RiK?).

I don't know if it just me but on bittorrent i get a maximum of 15kbs if I'm lucky. It would be great but i´m probably asking to much.

1st. - These are not up on the torrents nor do I plan on hosting them.

2nd. - (skeg64 - I hope this answers your ??) Sorry guys, No Patch or update these have been re-authored as regular DVD's - There was a LITTLE bit of space on the TR47 set still and RowMan used that space to add a title menu - NO MUSIC NO BUTTONS NO CHAPTER SELECTION - Just that neat picture that I have posted on my site.

- They are regular VIDEO_TS folders - As stated above they've been re-authored NOT re-encoded -

My new DSL line took 18 hours to download ISOMIX'es ANH. I was downloading up to 167 kbps. As for updates, designing DVD's is very tricky, and nothing like mastering CD's. It would be better if TR47 asked whoever made the DVD's for him to fix them, but that doesn't appear to be a priority. Maybe his source can no longer remaster them?
