A Star Trek - Original Series Primer? ~or~ What 5 or so episodes to show an 8 year old to introduce him to Kirk and Spock?

Author

It's basically all there in the title.

As I've mentioned, I'm starting to show my 8 year old a slew of classic films, and I've included Star Trek 2-4 & 6 on that list.

But before he sees Star Trek II (SPOILERS and the death of Spock) I wanted him to see some classic Original Series episodes.  Space Seed is definitely on the list.  Also the Trouble with Tribbles.

Though I'm drawing a blank on 3-4 other episodes that would be enjoyable for an 8 year old and also establish all of the relationships to prepare him to enjoy the movies.

Help?

Some Klingon episodes would be great.

Oh, and I'm not showing him Charlie X after cracks about my hair.

I love Mirror, Mirror, but that's mostly from my days listening to Information Society.  Plus, it might get kind of confusing.

I rather liked "Shore Leave" myself when I was young, but other than that I"m not much help. TOS is no TNG in my book.

When I was eight I loved every episode of it I saw. I had a die-cast metal Enterprise D and I'd pretend it was the original Enterprise. The fact Kirk wasn't bald, liked to fight, said sarcastic comments, and didn't have gray hair made him so much cooler than Picard in my eight year old mind.

Of course who knows what amazing technological wonders your kid has already been exposed to. In those days my family had a 20 inch TV with a fuzzy picture (but unlike my cousins TV, it didn't make everything purple tinted, so I thought it was a great TV), we picked up a total of five TV stations including PBS (which was the majority of what I watched when I was eight), Saturday morning cartoons were a pretty miraculous thing more than worth the effort of waking yourself up at 6am for, and my sister's Nintendo Entertainment System was an amazing technological wonder that I really longed to take a part to see how it worked (and eventually in a very well planned out secret operation, I did).

In other words, your kid is probably already spoiled with technology to the point where the novelty of the original Star Trek, even at its finest moments, will be entirely lost on him. Daddy worship and a strong desire to like the things your dad likes are probably your best chances. Honestly, how can even TNG hold up to stuff like The Incredibles or Toy Story and whatever else they are weened on these days in the mind of an eight year old? Boring old classics like Moby Dick and War of the Worlds are among my favorite books (just to prove I am not a textbook case of ADHD or anything like that), and even I have a hard time sitting through an episode of TOS these days.

The Voyage Home is the first Star Trek film I have a memory of seeing (younger than eight), and my first introduction to the classic crew; as a kid I thought it was hilarious and really enjoyable. I didn't get why Spock was acting weird though, I figured he was just like that. Sometime later when my dad let me watch the much more violent Wrath of Khan, I couldn't believe they <SPOILERS> killed Spock at the end <END SPOILERS> and begged my dad to let me watch the next film, which he didn't own and had to track down for me. He hated V so I didn't see that until a long time after it came out, but I remember he took me to see VI two or three times in the theater some years later (I remember thinking "Oh no, not again!" the third time, but didn't want to disappoint him and was still excited about the idea of going to the movies with my dad. The Hunt for Red October was another film I went with him to see at least three times that kind of bored me after the first).

Kilngons? you mean those sweaty 'Pirate' looking guys?

City on the edge of forever probably isn't great for getting someone up to speed but it IS a great episode.

There are still some that I haven't seen and it's been a while since i've seen any. I might consider checking out the HD remasters.

If I were you, I would start with 'Where no man has gone before', then 'The Man Trap' and then onwards through to 'Turnabout Intruder'

I honestly think "The Corbonite Maneuver" is a great introduction to the characters. It was the first episode filmed, but not shown first. It's got very early Kirk/Spock/McCoy banter and is generally fun.

Netflix says "Streaming Coming Soon"

I do wonder if they'll be classic or HD remasters or both.  What do they offer on disc currently, does anyone know?

Not sure. I think they have them streaming from a CBS site (which doesn't help if you're wanting to watch it on your xbox).

I think CBS took them down, although it was awesome when they did because they offered both the original and redone versions (only one guess as to which one I watched).

"The Naked Time" is probably a good one for a kid, just because of how silly it is, and it also gets some good Spock scenes.  Maybe "Arena" for its kitsch value.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Episodes have been available on Netflix Streaming most of the month.  Gotta watch them now since we're cancelling in Aug.

So, we started "Where No Man..." but it was boring me, so I immediately switched to "Shore Leave" which all of us (my younger girls were also watching) enjoyed.  My wife happened to only watch the last 5 minutes, you remember?  When McCoy shows up with the burlesque bunnies?  In the, er... feathers?  (How did this ever pass censors?)  My daughter says, "I like the pink one!"  I say "I do, too!"  And I got my fair share of dirty looks from my wife.  Not that kind of dirty, the kind where I'm in trouble.  Not that kind of trouble... well, actually yes.  That kind of trouble.

*ahem*

We started "Space Seed", which only my son and I watched.  But sadly didn't get to finish it before the wife and the kids went to play with cousins for the weekend.

Yup.  Part protest and part just not worth that cost to me.

I used to pay $16 a month for 3 discs at a time with streaming.  I decided it wasn't worth it to me, so I dropped it down to 1 disc + stream for $10.  So 1 disc + stream for $16 definitely isn't worth it.

Last fall we took a break from Netflix for "a month" because we were so busy.  That month became 2, became 6... and I can't say I missed it that much.  It was nice to focus on something other than rapidly processing netflix.

I cancelled my Netflix streaming too, mostly because of the price hike. I justified $8 a month, because it was so cheap. But jumping up a few bucks was just enough for me to undo that justification.

I am glad that when you cancel they have you give them a reason for cancelling, with one of the reasons being price.

Stream only is now 7 bucks. It's stream plus dvd that got hiked.

I'm going to kill the disc plan but keep the streaming.  There's very few discs I have on my queue vs 60 or 70 streaming titles.  If I liked the movie that much, I'll buy the disc, so I use the streaming to see stuff I wouldn't bother buying the disc for.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.
