editing VOB's?

Does anyone know of a way to edit a VOB file? I want to continue with my own OOT project, and I don't want to have to convert my VOB files to AVI (to edit in Virtual-Dub) and then have to reconvert back to VOB when I want to burn to a DVD. Anyone have any ideas?

Oh and does anyone know of a good program for burning a DVD?

For burning, I'd recommend either Nero (If your DVD is in folder form) or DVDDecrypter if in an img. If you actually wanted to ask a good program for DVD authoring, I'd personally recommend Adobe Encore, however the popular consensus on this board tends to sway toward DVDLab Pro.

TMPGEnc DVD Author can edit VOBs but I'm sure there's a better program out there.

What kind of editing do you want to do? TMPGenc MPEG Editor and VideoReDo can both cut scenes on any frame from a VOB/MPEG-2 and save without having to re-encode the whole thing. I'm not sure what else they can do since I have only used them for that.

I want to do a number of things actually. For one, just want to remove Jabba from ANH, and the few frames that show greedo firing.

Later on I'd like to re-insert Boba's old voice in ESB. I addition to re-inserting "your lucky you don't taste very good," and the ultra bad-ass, "Bring my shuttle." Mabye even clip the shots of Vader's Lambda shuttle too.

Not to mention reinserting the original Lapti Nek and Shaw.

If its possible I'd also like to retouch some of the bad saber shots too.

Any idea on how to do all those, without losing quality. That's my biggest concern...quality. And doing it all for free.

Well I don't know about that. MPEG wasn't really designed with editing in mind; but rather as a final format after all the edits are done. Just to be able to cut scenes on any frame with MPEG and save without reencoding the whole thing is quite a trick, which those programs that I mentioned, have to reencode a few frames before and after the cut to make it work.

If you are going to be doing serious editing, you will most likely have to end up reencoding the entire thing.

Womble's MPEG Video Wizard _could_ do most of the things you're talking about there - but it's only really designed for cutting/inserting scenes.

If you do want to go ahead and make image changes, and even make decent audio changes I'd recommend demuxing the VOBS to M2V, and then using DVD2AVI and AVIsynth to edit them in something like Premiere.

I've got a link to a really good step-by-step guide that I'm using to make my prequel edits - but I'm at work at the mo and don't have it here.

I'd like to see this guide or have a link to it. I am working on my own edits, even trying to do a 5.1 soundfield in soundforge. I then want to chronicle my work in a how-to as well. So this would be very helpful.

Sounds good, I'd love to see it. Post a link if you can.
