Thought it might be fun to discuss our record collections. I have been building up a small collection for the past few months. I get most of them pretty cheap at thrift stores. (Goodwill, Value Village, Salvation Army, etc...)

Here's what I have so far (some just for the goofiness factor):

- Santana - Santana
- Emo Philips - E=MO²
- Emo Philips - Live from the Hasty Pudding Theatre
- Meco - The Wizard of Oz
- UFO - Strangers in the Night
- UFO - Obsession
- Supertramp - Breakfast in America
- Tiny Tim - God Bless Tiny Tim
- Herbie Hancock - Future Shock
- Tomita - Bolero
- Heart - Heart
- Heart -Dog & Butterfly
- Cheap Trick - Live at Budokan
- Ghostbusters OST
- Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Love Beach
- Rock 'n Roll with Fat Albert and the Junkyard Band
- Van Halen - 1984
- Van Halen - 5150
- "Sit on It" - Fonzie's Favorites
- Karl Farkas und Ernst Waldbrunn - Hor'n Sie sich das an!
- Mr. Dressup
- Mister Rogers - Let's Be Together Today
- Steve Martin - A Wild and Crazy Guy
- Steve Martin - Comedy is Not Pretty
- Star Wars OST
- Huey Lewis and the News - Picture This
- Huey Lewis and the News - Hip to Be Square EP
- Huey Lewis and the News - Sports
- Huey Lewis and the News - Fore!
- 2001: A Space Odyssey OST
- Bob and Doug McKenzie - Great White North

I am going to be getting some Huevos Rancheros records soon, and hopefully Herb Alpert's "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" sometime. :)

I love the insides of the Steve Martin records:

Crumbs, I couldn't possibly list mine we'd be here for centuries.

I've got every record Edward Woodward ever made (gods preserve his soul).

Haha !

You miss some Iron Maiden though. Yeah, that's a small collection for someone who can get cheap occasions. Just a beggining let's say.

Around Paris you would find what to fill a vault very fast. It's vynil land !

Keep in mind I live in a very small town and only started buying them a few months ago. Doesn't matter how cheap they are if you can't find them. ;)

I would like some more rock and metal for sure. I hope I can get more Van Halen. Deep Purple would be nice. Same with Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

I have a grand total of two vinyls. First one is the the Star Wars read-along story book. The other one is a recent piece of Bioshock 2 swag, in the form of a real vinyl with a recording of the Rature (National?) Anthem, from the somethinginthesea.com viral marketing thing (never played the viral marketing game, but heard people who wrote to a certain address were getting free stuff, so thought I'd give it a try).

I have often thought of digging through the massive piles of vinyl they have at places like Good Will, but have always found the massive piles too overwhelming and time consuming to mess with. If I had a turntable, then I'd definitely put out a greater effort.

Yeah, it did take me a long time last time I was there, but it was worth it, as it was in a town 45 minutes away and I hardly ever go there. If it was local, though, I'd probably go often enough to [hopefully] spot the new stuff by itself.

Oh, and I totally forgot about the old Star Wars read along albums! I actually had more of them on cassette than vinyl. I can't remember which were which now. I'll have to go look.

Obviously. Anyway, having everything you can dream of around you is not totally an advantage. You may learn more when you are "poor". ;)

There was a time when I was going to some friends and listen old metal albums through vinyls... Wow ! A real travel through time ! CD's lose everything about this genre.

Your first comment reminds me a Steven Wright joke: "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?" :)

Besides the 'time travel' feel, CDs also lose a lot when it comes to album art. There are some that I wish I could see in 12" x 12" format. The art is a big part of the reason why I'm getting vinyl.

I don't have my collection with me, but here's what I know I have:

The Beatles

  • Magical Mystery Tour (US stereo version)
  • The Beatles (the White album) (first record only, lost the second years ago) (US stereo version)
  • Abbey Road (US version)
  • Hey Jude (US-only compilation album)
  • Love

The Who

  • My Generation (mono British version, new pressing)
  • Tommy (stereo US version)
  • Who's Next
  • The Who By Numbers
  • Who Are You
  • Tommy as performed by the London Symphony Orchestra

The Rolling Stones

  • Tattoo You
  • Undercover
  • Let it Bleed
  • Goats Head Soup
  • Various greatest hits compilations (3, I think?)

The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army

Sadly, that's all I can remember right now.  I know I have more, though.

I've got loads - Beatles, Lennon, U2, Michael jackson, prince, Simon and Garfunkel, Elton John, Dylan.... too many to remember or list.

One cool one I do have is an original 1977 Star Wars OST that a friend gave me - I was looking through her records one christmas day and I was blown away by her SW record and she just said 'keep it, merry christmas'.

War does not make one great.

And it's even worse now with digital music.  A little thumbnail picture is all you get.

Oh man, where do I begin?. All original Genesis, including all the very rare early releases (doubles on most), 45s, EPs, Promos, box sets of interviews used by radio stations, etc. Nearly the same with Yes, The Beatles, McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters solo, Dave Gilmour solo, Supertramp, Eagles, Springsteen, Doobie Brothers, America, King Crimson, U2, Billy Joel, & many I can't think of just at the moment. Also, more original soundtracks than I can count - Live And Let Die (first album I ever bought), Jaws, Star Wars, Alien, and on and on. Literally hundreds of albums on vinyl. If I had to guess, 300 LPs, 100 singles.

All of it - lost in a flood about 15 years ago. You learn to say goodbye to stuff and move on. Nearly all has been replaced on CD, but it took years. Some things were never made on CD - radio box sets, some EPs, etc - so they're just gone.

Oddly enough, there were actually two pieces that did survive. My original copy of The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking & the soundtrack to Alien. Pros was out being museum mounted (a type of preservative framing), and Alien was stored in a plastic container at the top of a closet. I still have both.

So, in answer to the original query; Not only can I list my vinyl collection - I can show it to you. ;-)

*Edit* Not long after that, realizing how it can all go away in a matter of hours, I had the soundtrack to Alien converted to CD (it wasn't available at the time). So, here I am 30 years later, still listening to the very same Alien soundtrack, complete with the same pops I've been hearing since 1979. In fact, I shall listen to it now.

One of the rarest items I have is a copy of the Tarantula bootleg of The Omen soundtrack.

At the time the soundtrack was only officially available in Japan and when 20th Century Fox found out about the bootleg they ceased most of them and had them destroyed.

The cassettes and CDs are generally easier to find than the vinyl pressings.

The most expensive I may have is the What's New Pussycat? soundtrack which set me back £45 back in the 80's.

There was a really good old style record store near Brighton station called "The Record Store" which was run by a wonderful old chap (always suspected him of being a Time Lord).

He sold other records, a few tapes and a small selection of CDs (which he hated) but on the whole the shop was dedicated to soundtrack albums.

He would look through the TV listings and put soundtracks of films that were going to be on the telly that week in the window.

It was a real treasure trove and I desperately wanted to work there but he only rarely let anyone else work in the shop right up until he sadly passed away.

Well, it is good music, and it is a good cover... So to answer your question, yes.

Way to many to list, I'm a vinyl junky. Lately I been playing Howlin' Wolf "Moanin' In the  Moonlight" and Stephen Stills "Just Roll Tape" alot. They sound so damn good now that I have a decent rig. I'm running a Rega P3 with a Herbie's Way Excellent II mat and a Audio Technica OC9 MKII cartridge. I couldn't live without my old ipod video at work or in the car, but at home I play pretty much only vinyl.

A mate of mine in work thrives on vinil in work, and i guess deep down, i guess im beating myself over the head every time i listen to him talking about what he picked up from a charity shop, and every time i look at this thread! I really need to have to hear Ultravox's "Vienna" on LP before i croak on a high end sound system though (none digital only).I guess that maybe easy enough to do on e-gay, perhaps.

Though dare i mention MP3's sound quality in this thread at all.................??

I have a plethora of Tijuana Brass albums that I got from my dad.
