Anyone make the move yet?

I bought 2 new W7 laptops this summer and I'm eligible to get the upgrade for $15.  Has anyone done that yet?  I'm curious if I can dual-boot the upgrade to check it out a little before I commit to it.

Other than that, check this out: http://www.redmondpie.com/this-extensive-list-of-windows-8-keyboard-shortcuts-will-help-you-adapt-to-the-new-interface/

Never used it, but I hate the way it looks.  Not everything has to be a tablet!

You're wrong. Everything has to be a tablet.

(Also, you don't have to use the MetroUI if you don't want to.)

I don't have any reason to upgrade at the moment. The new UI does turn me off.

Yes you do - even if you're just passing through on your way to the desktop. You must boot into the metro ui.

And it fails at being intuitive - i spent ages trying to figure out how to log in - there was absolutely nothing to indicate i had to 'swipe' the screen up - and this was on a PC. What the fuck Microsoft?

I fucking hate Metro. Aside from that the desktop environment is clean, fast and seems efficient.

I would recommend you stick with 7 as long as possible.

Is it still possible to buy Win 7, or are they pulling it from the shelves?

Why would you ever?

Windows are for houses not computers.

"Buy" Windows 7 ?

lol

I got a five-finger discount when I 'bought' mine on-line.

Not sure if I should bother with Win 8 for the time being, though.

Nope, you can boot directly to the desktop using the program Classic Shell. :

http://www.classicshell.net/

It also gives you a start menu which is lacking in Win8.

I don't actually have Windows 8 but because of programs like Classic Shell I've been getting more interested.

Does anybody here have Windows 8?  How's it working out for you?  Should I stick with Windows 7 or upgrade?

Edit: You can use classic shell in Windows 7 too.  It brings back certain features from XP that were removed.

I'm still doing just fine with my Windows 95 and Nokia cellphone.

December 31, 2001 was the end of support for Windows 95.  Apparently that doesn't matter to you.  I am curious though about 'End of Support' because I kind of would like to use XP after support ends.  I thought I read somewhere that if you have a good firewall and antivirus as well as a good anti-malware program like MalwareBytes you should be able to use XP after end of support.  Any thoughts on this?

Since I cleaned up my old Laptop, I'm still waffling on upgrading to Win 7, since I'm pretty sure it can't handle 8. Only real reason to keep it running XP is my Dad's old scanner. (Which is bigger than the one built into my printer.)

Since my favorite games are kind of old, making it into a dedicated gaming platform is another idea.

There are no drivers for the newer OS. A new dedicated scanner of similar size would set me back more than $200.

Forced obsolescence sucks.

In theory, 8 should run faster than 7.  Can't speak for practice though...

Just like Windows Millennium Edition was supposed to be better than Win98. But instead it was a crashing joke.

Tell me, what happens to us in the future? Do we become assholes or something?

If you try using XP after end of support, you get the Frink virus.

Would be really funny if Microsoft did some sort of self destruct thing disguised as a final XP update. Of course some vital industry still stubbornly clinging to using XP in their systems would implode, and mass chaos would ensue...

That already happened on Jan 1, 2000.  I don't want to try living through that again!

xhonzi - did you end up making the move? Curious on your thoughts - if you did in fact start using it..

Haven't played a lot with 8 [still happy with 7] but I'm getting pretty tempted to pick up a Surface Pro [Microsoft Tablet]. they run windows 8 Pro. I guess I could use 3rd party stuff to tweak it more to my liking..

Might have to wait for the prices to drop a bit, though.
