Well, its finally on the big screen after getting lots of ad time (god its everywhere). And according to Rotten Tomatoes its pretty good, much to my surprise.

Anyone gonna see it...and if they do...any reviews? I don't trust big time reviewers, for the most part.

Looks good to me. I was working at a visual effects company here in Lonmdon when production began and the concept art looked great, so I am very interested.
The book was called CHARLIE and the Chocolate factory, so hopefully this film will follow the zany spirit of the book.

Oh no, I hit an extra key. My life is over.
By the way Kev, in case you didn't notice, I was being sarcastic, cocksmoker.

It's been forever since I read the book, and I wasn't looking forward to the movie very much (I just knew I'd probably end up seeing since my girlfriend really wants to) until I saw this special for it on E! It shows this clip where, after Augustus meets his end, the Oompah Loompahs come out and sing this song about how much he sucks. And Charlie asks something like, "But it just happened to him... How are the Oompah Loompahs singing about him?" And Wonka replies, "Excuse me, improvisation is key to any performer," or something like that. That cracked me up. Anything that can be that self-aware (especially when it comes to characters in musicals knowing all the words to the songs) and pull it off successfully is pretty good in my book. If the rest of the movie is that campy, I think I'll enjoy it.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I'm not going to see this on the big screen. I don't see any reason to. Pretty much the same as Willy Wonka just with squirrels. It would have been better had it just been a sequel of Willy Wonka and, not a "reinvisionment" of Charlie. Hell, even the ending's the same and, it's in the advertisements.

You do realize that both movies are adapted from a book, right?

Yes, I made that "reinvisionment" comment becuase, that's what Tim burton has done. He even did it with Planet of the Apes instead he changed the ending. Though, if it was a sequel I would see it in the theater(that's what I thought it was at first. Johnny Depp does look like an older Charlie.). It would be interesting to see what Charlie did with the factory. However, since that is not so, I'll just wait for the DVD or, not see it at all. Though, the advertisements pretty much show the important parts of the film(what happens to the kids, the ending, Charlie getting the ticket, the celebration after getting the ticket at his house, what the kids are like in thier regular lives, Wonka's Dad, the squirrels, heck it's like I've seen the film already.).

Well, you know, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory already has a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, so that wouldn't be too original either...

Well I don't think I'll see movie. Johnny Depp looks awful. He is not Willy Wonka. Sorry, no way this can possibly beat the classic original.

Well, I thought it was pretty good.

Its classic Depp and classic Tim Burton.

All of the Oompa Loompa songs had a different feel: disco, hard rock, opera, etc.; and were in ways a bit too long IMO.

Still a pretty good movie and worth seeing for sure.

Sorry. I guess it just my dislike Burton showing and the fact that Depp is a terrible miscast.

Technically, Depp looks much closer to how he's described in the book that Wilder did.

Well, I haven't seen any advertising for this in Australia yet, I did download the trailer many months ago and I'm looking forward to finally seeing it!

From what I remember Roald Dahl really disliked Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and this new movie was largely an attempt to make a movie based off the book, it is meant to be a lot closer. I hate it when people think this is a remake, it is simply an attempt to adapt the book to film again.

[edit]I seem to remember reading an article that mentioned that the writer of the new script had never actually seen the old movie.[/edit]

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Good point Gillean. It really is a new (and from what i hear a more true) adaptation of the book and not a remake of the movie. I guess ive kinda looked at it that way but never really thought about it that way if it makes sense.

I think why most people have problems with it is just for the above reason, they are looking at it as a remake of the movie. Its actually sad, but I dont think most americans realize that most of the movies they watch have their origins in book/print form (not talking about the script talking about their first publication is a book or short story).

I was also somewhat 'against' this movie at first too. by against i really just mean i had no interest to see it (even though ive read the book) but when i found out it was supposed to be closer to the book, and then saw the trailer i actually became interested to see it. Because the original has become such a classic I think that causes some resistance, I mean, how dare they change this classic movie (I think we can all relate to that) and that is where peoples (in general, i realize its not everyone, and that people on this board tend to be more 'cultured' than your average joe) lack of knowledge of the book, and that the new movie is a truer adaptation of the book hurts peoples perception on it.

I think im starting to ramble, so hopefully that makes some sense

*reads this thread is disbelief* sorry, They are making the same story again, it is a remake. This is the first I've heard of Roald Dahl disliking the original. It has been awhile since I have read the book, but I don't remember Wonka looking like Depp. But I will have to get the book out of my attic and make sure.
