PSYCHO_DAYV'S SW TRILOGY DVD SET REVIEW

Time
I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GET MY HANDS ON THE SET A WHOLE WEEK EARLY. SO, HERE IS MY REVIEW ON THE SET...

I WOULD LIKE TO START OFF BY SAYING THAT THE MENUS ON EVERY DISK ARE AWESOME. FROM THE MAIN MENU TO THE OPTIONS MENU THEY ROCK.

ANH: THE NEW ROTOSCOPING OF THE LIGHTSABERS WAS DECENT. THERE IS ONE EXCEPTION TO THIS. THE SCENE ON THE FALCON WHEN LUKE IS PRACTICING. ONLY HALF OF THAT SCENE GOT THE NEW ROTOSCOPE TREATMENT, AND TO TOP IT OFF THE SABER NOW HAS A GREENISH-BLUE HUE TO IT INSTEAD OF THE CORRECT SHADE OF BLUE. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. GREEDO STILL SHOOTS FIRST, BUT HAN SHHOTS BACK FASTER. IT'LL TAKE A LITTLE GETTING USED TO, BECAUSE THEY SHIFTED HAN OVER DIGITALLY TO MAKE IT APPEAR THAT GREEDO WOULD HAVE HIT HIM OTHERWISE WHICH I THINK MAKES THE SCENE WORK BETTER. JABBA LOOKS WAY BETTER NOW, BUT STILL NOT PERFECT. I GUESS I COULD LIVE WITH IT.

ESB: THE SOUND STILL WAS SYNCHED UP WITH THE PICTURE IN THE SCENE WHEN LUKE ESCAPES FROM THE WAMPA'S LAIR. THE NEW TRANSMISSION OF THE EMPEROR TO VADER WAS JUST PLAIN HORRIBLE. THE CONCEPT WAS GREAT, BUT THE EXECUTION WAS LACKING. IT LOOKED TO ME LIKE THEY POURED PUTTY OVER IAN'S FACE. THE SCENE WAS COMPLETELY REWRITTEN AS WELL. I DID LIKE THE REWRITE, BUT IAN WAS MISSING THE INFLICTION THAT CLIVE HAD WHEN PERFORMING THE SCENE. THERE WAS NO EMOTION. LUKE'S SCREAM HAS BEEN REMOVED !!! NO LONGER IS THERE A RETOOLED SCREAM FOR LUKE WHEN HE LETS HIMSELF PLUNDGE DOWN INTO THE ABYSS.

ROTJ: NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED HERE. AS IN ESB THE JEDI SPIRITS HAVE MORE COLOR AS OPPOSED TO THE BLUISH SHIMMERING HUE OF OLD. LUKE'S HOLO IMAGE AT JABBA'S PALACE EVEN HAS MORE COLOR. IT NO LONGER MATCHES WITH THE SW HOLOGRAPHS THROUGHOUT THE SERIES. IT WAS KIND OF A NICE LITTLE NOVELTY TO HAVE HAYDEN AS ANAKIN'S JEDI SPIRIT, BUT MR. SHAW'S SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEFT INTACT.

COMMENTARY FOR THE SET WAS LACKING ALSO. JUST WHEN YOU WANTED TO HERE GL'S EXPLAINATION FOR THE "NEW" CHANGES YOU GET BEN BURTT DRAGGING ON ABOUT HOW HE CAME UP WITH THE SOUND FOR THE SCENE OR HOW NOISY THE SETS WERE.

I WON'T SPOIL THE FORTH DISK FOR EVERYBODY, BUT I WILL SAY THAT THIS IS THE REASON WHY WE WILL ALL BUY THE SET.

FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SET OR POSTS COMMENTS ABOUT MY REVIEW. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO READING EVERYBODY'S PERSONAL REVIEWS ON THIS SET IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

I'm considering buying the set, only if to see what improvements there might be to the films. Could you (or someone) post screenshots of all of the significant changes?

Check over @ thedigitalbits.com. They've posted some pretty good screencaps, as well as a link to the new version of the Jabba scene in ANH.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Look around in some other threads. There have been plenty of screenshots posted. You can also view a bunch of them over at thedigitalbits.com.

- Exactly what I thought, he´s doing his best to avoid the real issues and questions with those new special editions. Just hoping they might slide by without too much hassle or notice. That´s a LOW way to great the fans on this release, by not giving them the info they so obviously want to hear. What a shame. Thank god I´m not buying this bug ridden release, I´ll rent it over a weekend and watch the Empire Of Dreams doc as well as other bonus material, but I won´t touch those "tinkered with" versions of the movies I grew up with, know and love. He´s just lost a faithful customer. This is it Lucas, no more!*

* That is until you get your arse around to releasing the original unaltered versions on the DVD format! THEN I´ll buy them...

Funny how all three of us posted the same thing within 60 seconds of each other.

while I admit the new Jabba is a vast improvement on the 97 version (he still doesn't look anything like ROTJ ), the thing that really bugged me was way the Han never makes correct eye contact with Jabba, he always appears to be talking to Jabba's shoulder, I don't remember it being such an issue in the 97 version, but I must admit to really liking the work they did on the Dianoga (trash compactor monster) it fits in a lot better with the scene now, after watching a New Hope tonight with the commentary, it was a real dissapointment that Carrie's input was cut back to almost nothing, as she was the only one who had any amusing anecdotes about the making of the movies.

Carrie had nothing interesting to say anyway. The Jabba scene is compleatly wrong - Jabba's shaddow goes in the wrong direction, Han then managed to cast a shaddow of his hand on Jabba despite the fect that his shaddow is going the other way... George Lucas is an idiot.

Well, don't forget the continuity issue with the scene that I mentioned in some other thread a few weeks back. Chewie is walking behind Han and Jabba, then they cut to Chewie standing near a door frame entrance, then they cut back to Han and Jabba with Chewie right behind them again. Nice big snafu.

The bonus materials disc is shit. While Empire Of Dreams is decent, as well as the trailers and tv spots (duh), everything else is recycled, boring crap. For instance, the legacy is all recycled interviews from when the SE came out, with the exception of Cameron and that fat, furry LOTR guy. The lightsaber featurette turns into a plug for Episode III. The characters featurette is all old interviews with the cast that have been seen before. The Episode III preview and the games stuff is more shameless plugging.
