Why the fans complain...

Sure some of us complain that Lucas is raping our childhood...how dare he.

Others bitch about preserving film for future generations.

Even more grip about the changes being silly, or that Lucas has lost his vision.

Regarding the Original Trilogy, I think most people would accept the changes without complaint if all the flaws were fixed. Such a large amount of time an expense has been put into these new releases that it doesn't really make sense to have the small problems remain. If you are going to redo things like Mos Eisley or the X-Wings, why not fix the lightsaber in the Falcon? If you are going to add dialogue, why not adjust the scene where Vader voicelessly motions to Tarkin? If you are going to put Jabba in, do it right. If you are going to remix the sound, do it well. If you are going to fix the tractor beam display, change the numbers on the countdown to Yavin display. If you fix the reverse image at the end of Empire, fix the reverse images in the Yavin control room with Threepio. If you are going to improve the lightsabers, at least make them look the same from shot to shot. If you want to add the Emprorer, make him look like the Emporer.

Above all we want these films to fit together...all six of them. Change what you will, but be consistent...it won't take that much more.

With respect to the Prequel Trilogy, perhaps George hasn't lost his vision. Both trilogies make fun of body noises, (burping in the 80's is what farting is today). Directorally speaking, George is the same director he was in Star Wars, THX, and AG. He isn't so revolutionary becaue everyone has copied his style that HIS style isn't original or new anymore. Its almost thirty years since the revolution. The revolutionaries are normal now. That IS the standard. His vision is reality, and serves to inspire the new generation of filmmakers such as Larry and Andy and PJ. Don't you think?

I think I speak for all the fans when I say we desire consistency.

My belief is that the films didn't need to be changed in the first place. Various technical errors don't bother me, so having them cleaned up with additional unneccasary scenes and effects isn't what I'd call the deal of a century.

Personally speaking, if all Lucas did was "clean up" the Original Trilogy's FX to make it more palatable to the current generation, then I don't think we'd have much of a problem. Clean up the lightsabers, smooth over the mattes, get rid of the landspeeder cloud.. I'm not saying I would like it, but these are changes that I would NEVER be vocal about.

But when that senile old bastard starts screwing with the actual story, then he's naturally got a problem, especially as all of the story/scene changes and additions (Greedo shoots first, Wampa munches, and munches, and munches..., "Hayden Ghost", Han blabs with Jabba over nothing, etc.) are absolutely terrible, self-serving, fit-the-crappy-Prequels horse-shit, and shows that a senile old fart should never story-edit his younger, more talented self.

I agree. Changes like that don't destroy the story or anything. But I think people forget that when you make an FX movie in that 70s/ early 80s limitations of the technology at the time will be apparant.

In mean in 20 so years, we've just gone from crappy practical effects to crappy digital effects. But atleast with practical, what you're seeing is physically there, thus looking real.

That's interesting, because I think that's really what he's trying to do with all the extra stuff. And honestly, I have to say that I think he's achieving his goal to some degree. I've just been watching the new DVD set, and while I prefer the original version, I think many of the changes -- Jabba and other animated critters in ANH; Palpatine in ESB; Coruscant, Naboo, and Hayden in ROTJ ... even [cringe] the Kiwi Boba Fett -- really do help tie the two trilogies together. They are moving away from the movies I remember, but I think the combined trilogies feel a bit more like a consistent story now.

The problem is, the original trilogy stood alone for so long, that fans like me grew to love it for what it was ... so even little changes stick out like a sore thumb. In my ideal world, Lucas would have tried to make the Prequels consistent with the pre-existing trilogy, in which case they would have been driven by characters rather than by some grandiose story arc, and traditional special effects (models, puppets, etc.) would have been used whenever it was apparent that CG effects would not be convincing.

Instead, we're getting the "consistency" added into the original trilogy as an afterthought, and the movies we remember are suffering in the process. I can still accept the new versions to some degree, just as I can accept the Prequels and their shortcomings. But the unaltered original trilogy is where my heart lies.

Farting was as cheap in the 80's as it is today, and then as now, it denotes the lowest brand of humor possible.

Sorry, but speak for yourself. I only want the first three movies ... in their untainted form. I'd like to forget the prequels happened, which is why I resent this latest release all the more.

Yeah, why do some Lucas fanboys think that anyone else gives a rat's ass about those horrible Prequels? What color is the sun in their strange little world?

Well, as a former Lucas fan boy, I can tell you that admitting any fault in the prequels would go against their pedastal for Lucas as the sole great American filmmaker of the modern era.

Believe me, I know it.

When I need a good laugh, I just head on over to the StarWars.com forums, and read the latest illogical, insipid and downright hilarious Lucas Fanboy explanation of "why there are no plotholes".

It's pure comedy, and the lengths these knot-heads will go to is truly amazing.... not to mention quite scary. I'm just glad none of these guys wil ever reproduce.

I think whats ironic is the deleted scenes that could add a lot to the story...like the Biggs Darklighter scenes...could add the friendship. It would mean more when Luke wants to go into town to see his friends and pick up power converters, it would mean more when Luke wants to join the rebellion, it would mean more when his friend Biggs comes to save him and ultimately gives his life for Luke to make the ultimate shot to save the known universe.

But we get Greedo and Han and Jabba tail stepping scenes that not only are pointless but irritating, and OMG that song in Jabba's palace with the singers in ROTJ...holy crap is that crappy...I think that's that worst scene of all.

Nah, Biggs scenes would RUIN the begining of the movie...

Not in the hands of a gifted editor...it wouldn't. I still love the way a new hope opens the droids, the ship the shooting, vader's entrance...cut to Luke looking with his binoculars up at the sky thinking something's going on...cut to the R2 and leia and her getting stunned, cut to luke heading into the bar to grab biggs and the girl to look at the sky with the binoculars and see there's a battle going on, they dismiss him saying its nothing. Right after that and clearly not before or during the looking through the binoculars the droids launch free of the ship towards tatooine. Now Biggs has the conversation with Luke about joining the rebellion and him having to leave. The droids land on the planet and then as I said those situations have more gravity with the friendship established and Luke's desire to join the rebellion is more fervent, Luke going out that night with Biggs on his last night and missing it seems more weighty and of course ultimately losing biggs now matters.

I have to agree with Ric on this, the Biggs Scenes would ruin the pacing of the beginning of the film, regardless of how gifted the editor is. Possibly the only really worthwhile part of the commentary on ANH deals with why that portion of the film was cut. Forgetting that for a moment though, have you actually seen the bigs scenes? They're pretty bad. These are not some holy grail of deleted scenes, they're poor scenes that were cut for pacing and story concerns. The scenes work in the radio series, but not in the film itself. For me, the Biggs scene they included in the Special Editions is more than enough to establish the bond of friendship between him and Luke, and make his death meaningful.

i think the Biggs scene should still be included on the disc though... maybe as a deleted scene

I'd like to see any deleted scene. A version of the Biggs/Luke and Tosche Station scenes that aren't grainy and slow, the Wampa/Snowtrooper scenes in Empire and Vader's choke scene in Jedi...

I'd like to see the Biggs opening as a deleted scene ... I'd also like to see the Jabba sequence as a DELETED SCENE. Forget inserting it back into the film with awful CGI ... just give me a nice clean copy with the porky Irish guy.

I have accually edited the Luke/Biggs scenes back in and it really slows the pace. What I think would be cool is if at the end of Episode III, after the credits, Have those scenes. Kind of leading into ANH.

I know of the Biggs/Luke and Toshe Station scene but I haven't heard of the Wampa/Snowtrooper scene in Empire and this Vader choke scene in Jedi. Who does Vader choke?

Author
Time
It may have been Moff Jerjerrod, but I've also heard it may have been the Royal Guards. A shot of it shows Moff being choked, but the script has Vader using a mind trick on one of the guards. This is why I'd like to see it!

The Wampa scenes in Empire had Echo Base being attacked by the creatures but it was cut because they looked crappy. That's why there's a dead Tauntaun when Han gets on the Tauntaun to find Luke. Also, Leia references to it..."Then it couldn't have been one of those creatures"

They eventually locked the Wampas up and had a warning sticker on the door, which C-3PO rips off when the Snowtroopers invade the base. They enter the pen and the Wampas kill them.

There's also a more passionated kiss between Luke and Leia, a brief moment of it can be seen in the original trailer. I don't know where that scene would be, it looked like an alternate version of Leia's kiss, but didn't work as well as the surprise kiss one. Perhaps they already knew Leia was Luke's sister, and thought that a more passionated kiss between siblings would be waaay too much for a PG film. It would be ok in a early 70s Jonh Waters film though.

I agree with you completely. I first saw A New Hope when I was 4 years old and I've been a nerd ever since. To me, the appeal of the Original Trilogy is the fact that they are Original.

Also, the only hang-up I have with the DVD's is Han and Greedo in ANH. Han shoots first!
