Why didn't Darth Vader hit Luke's ship?

I was just wondering why Darth Vader didn't hit Luke during the final stages of the Death Star trench run. He clearly had him in sight and had a good tone. And he fired just before Han takes out the Tie Fighter. Or did he miss because of the explosion?

He missed because that's what the script said :P If he had hit and destroyed Luke, the movie would have ended with the bad guys winning.

Luke's midichlorians put a "Force" field around the ship. Yuk yuk yuk.

I noticed in the film that whenever Vader fired at someone, it took a couple to a few seconds before one of his bolts actually hit his target. When he fired at Luke Han got him before he could fire a shot that could hit him.

For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

Dammit, I was trying to stay spoiler-free for the Special-Special-Special Edition next year!

When Vader shot down Tiree (Y-Wing) and Red 12 (X-Wing in Red Leader's trio), he missed the first six shots. Vader manages only five shots at Luke before his wingman explodes.

It seems to take a while for a TIE's lasers to home in on the locked target.

It makes you wonder why they have targeting computers at all.

Oh, and ADM, if you mention Luke and midichlorians again... SO HELP ME!!!!!

"Why didn't Darth Vader hit Luke's ship?"

because like flash gordon which these movies were based on the hero never dies.

even the villains don't stay permanently dead. as ming rose from the dead in flash gordon so did the emperor palpatine in dark empire.

i think people try to make the movies look serious when they were made for ages 5-9 and are kiddie fare.

like the transformer cartoons unless looked at through rose colored glasses of nostalgia don't hold up to the mind of people in their 20s or 30's, hell even some teens find the films laughable or contemptible. still they are worlds better than the prequels, just like buster crabbes flash gordon is better than the new sci fi version.

the new jedi order was the first star wars series to try to add some adult and real world things to star wars like death, and non black and white characters i.e. ambiguity. the prequels did this also but rather poorly, similar to how poorly the legacy novels are being handled.

as to whether the oot is relevent to the time in which we live, post 911, in comparison to say the new battlestar galactica is a discussion for another time.

Most sources indicate the Death Star utilized powerful sensor jammers, probably concomitantly with the field generators that reduced the actual maneuverability of starfighters inside the trench. Imperial targeting computers are probably much more accurate when dealing with targets outside DS-scale jamming fields. (Assuming the target isn't using their own effective ECM.)

I don't think the first Star Wars was aimed at 5-9 yo's
