What is the worst line in the Prequel Trilogy?

Author
Time

I'm sure we've discussed this before, but I was inspired by this Reddit post to see what we all thought was the absolute worst line of dialogue in the Prequels.

For me, I think it's Ewan's complete flubbing of the "Killing... YOUNGLINGS!" line. Mostly because he managed to act quite well throughout the films, and flubbing that line seemed really uncharacteristic of his performance. I would expect it from Hayden for instance, but it just took me right out to hear it from Ewan.

I think a close second would be the entire fireplace scene from AOTC. Boy that was garbage. "I wish I could wish away my feelings..." "we live in a real world, Anakin; come back to it..." ugh.

What are your nominations?

END OF LINE

Everything from the balcony scene. Every line of it makes me cringe. That whole scene is awful--the atmosphere, dialogue, and acting. Not to mention that Natalie Portman looks hideous in it.

"From my point of view the Jedi are evil"

Crap dialogue and crap acting.

It's hard for me to say. I haven't seen TPM since -- oh, about 2010 -- and haven't seen AOTC & ROTS since about 2006/2007, so my recollection of the various horrible lines of dialogue isn't clear and distinct in my mind; most of it has blended together into one indeterminate stream of abysmal writing and acting within my mind.

I recommend reading that reddit post. It's like a refresher course. There's some gold in there.

The sand monologue-thing as the highlight and every exchange between those two, basically. Horrible writing, abysmal delivery.

Something in Sith where they used President George Bush's "If you aren't for me, you are against me" thing, only instead of just outright quoting, they chose to replace it with some really awkward wording, or as I like to call it, "Normal PT dialog."

Also from that reddit post,

probably one of these ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i909Rm4NQN8

(Are we counting Jar Jar talk as "lines??)

Jar Jar is perfectly bearable if you pit his lines against, say, anything related to the "romance" in AotC.

Also, I've remembered the fireplace scene from AotC and I've changed my mind: there's no highlights, all of those lines are equally wretched.

Jar Jar's probably the best developed character in the whole trilogy, even though he's moronic and annoying as hell.

That is quite the worst line yes but not for the reasons stated above.

The reason is that it makes it look like the dark side makes one stupid rather than evil. He knew too well Palpatine was the evil Sith who tried to take over the Republic (after all he personally admitted it to him before he went to rely this news to Windu). So after he turned (for the selfish reason to save his wife, NOT because he thought the Jedi were trying to stage a coup) he suddenly forgot all that.

And here is how it should have been... He traded the fall of Republic (helped a criminal, ie Palpatine) for his wife which is an evil thing. In order to protect himself from a persecution he should have willingly try to get rid of the Jedi.

Yeah "Film Editing by Ben Burtt" was a pretty bad one too.

and

"Stunt Coordinator - Nick Gillard" is up there.

Jar Jar's first lines in the jungle. 15 years later and I still can't make out what he's saying to Liam Neeson.

I sometimes feel between that line, and the "I hate yooooouuuu!" that they were going for an "Anakin is now completely batshit insane" vibe, but never really committing.

AOTC Threepio "I'm quite beside myself" and "This is such a drag" *sigh*

AOTC Yoda "Around the survivors, a perimeter, create". I know Yoda speaks in broken English but hell bloody! I changed it to "Around the survivors, create a perimeter" and it sounded much better.

Basically, any line that has the title "Attack of the Clones" written somewhere above it in the script.

It is really funny when he says it in Frink's version though.

I think Ric is referring specifically to the balcony scene in ROTS. It was clearly shot in the usual round of disastrous PT pickups, as Natalie looks much thinner in it, than in the rest of the film. Also her hair is all over the place unlike in the scene just after the nightmare, where she is in the same costume but looking curvaceous and with a decent hairdo.

On that subject, another terrible line is from that post nightmare scene, where Padme says "I doubt the Queen will continue to allow me to serve in the Senate". What?!?! You'll be sacked because you are pregnant, what kind of sexist f**ked up dark-ages operation do they run on Naboo anyway!? This line really made me question George's attitudes.

Well, I think it's more along the lines of people keep trying to kill her. It's kind of not fair to the baby to have to dodge assassination attempts?

I assumed he was talking about the balcony scene in AOTC. He didn't specify.

I was referring to that particular scene. On top of everything Ryan mentioned, her makeup is really bad in the scene.

Ugh. Utter shit.

On the previous subject of Jar-Jar, he's actually ignorable. He says dumb crap, and you expect it, and you can ignore it; he gets too much screen time, yes, but really not that much, and none of his lines are pivotal, so you can just safely ignore him.

When it's a main character, though, you can't ignore it; they have "important" dialogue that you need to hear. When Anakin just emits a torrent of verbal diarrhea every third line, you have to just sit there and listen to it. When Ewan flubs that younglings line, it takes you right out of the film. It's just awful.
