Man, Waterworld doesn't look very high-def at all.

OK, time to release this project... I have all the foreign languages I use as usual (French, German, Italian, Spanish) plus two English one, the fixed Cinema DTS, and the analog laserdisc track, captured at 48KHz...
Should I include the latter (1.5GB), discard it to gain space for a better video, or compress to, let's say, 192kbps AC3?

You could also answer in the poll on fanres, three days before the final decision!

Great news Andrea! I think compressing the analog laserdisc track would defeat the purpose of including it. I would personally include it, I don't think losing 1.5gb from the video bitrate will make much difference to the image quality.

The fact is, the movie is quite long - 135m - and including all audio tracks in a BD-25 will leave the average bitrate around 17mbps, while leaving out the analog track will increase it to 19mbps - maybe not much difference, but even this small increase could help retaining film grain.

Hmm, actually now that you mention it, generated grain does have a way of being more video bitrate hungry than normal grain, I know that from my own The Phantom Menace regrained edition. I've changed my mind, you shouldn't include it IMHO, your generated grain will need as much video bitrate as possible.

Have you considered making a bd-50 release of this as well? I think the grain you add would probably really benefit and look even more natural and filmic. I found the difference between my 22gb and 50gb release of The Phantom Menace to be quite noticable.

I thought so, but I'm still struggling to find a way to let my BD-25 releases compatible with most standalone players... I can't think about making a two-layer BD-50, looking to find the right "place" for the layer break!

If it helps, BD-50 layer breaks don't seem to trigger an extended pause, as DVD-9s did. I'm not saying this as a fact: it's just been my experience on my BD players.

I guess if it's better to make two m2ts file and put them into different layers - if the application allows that... or if the layer break is made "automagically"...

Aluminium's right - layer breaks on BD-R DLs are no problem at all. There no longer needs to be a conscious decision about the layer break position - I regularly burn ~25GB video files to BD-Rs (usually as part of a playlist with other items) and the data simply flows onto the second layer when the break point is arrived at. Likewise, playback should be seamless - BD player buffers are much more effective (as, I suspect, are the laser mechanisms).

Of course, the real issue (as you suggest yourself) is compatibility: you need a good burner, good burning app, good discs AND a friendly player at the receiving end. Still, let's not let caution stand in the way of a quality product...

I also thought to add the Cinema DTS track, plus the analog english track from the laserdisc; foreign languages are from the HD-DVD Dolby Digital Plus track; they lack the .1 subwoofer track, so it's taken from the Cinema DTS, and is re-encoded to DD 640kbps.

Without any attempt to doubt your technical expertise but out of interest, how did you know for sure that the bass from the apparently silent LFE channel wasn't remixed into the others, at least partially but was in fact just left out by mistake?

After all, the standalone LFE is technically obsolete since ages.

Dunno for sure, but I prefer with instead without it! (^^,)

Waterworld encoded video (AVC 19.0mbps average, 39.5mbps max, 1.85:1 1080p) is finally ready - and is really gorgeous! Finally no more pink clouds and magenta sea… it recalls now all the good colors you could find on laserdisc, without the bad ones.

The only thing I wish to do now is to prepare a simple BD menu, but MultiAVCHD doesn’t work properly… maybe I could always release it as a menu-less BD compliant folder.

Myinternalorgan would still accept this?
