Looks like we’re about to start in 15 minutes or so.

If I’m reading the control panel correctly, TPM will be capped on one tuner, then AotC and RotS will both be capped on the other tuner.

This is WOWOW Cinema, not WOWOW Prime, so it’s possible the bitrates etc. may be different.

Oopsie! Looks like today’s prequels marathon is SUBTITLED. Reject?

(ETA: Confirmed. Yeah. It’s just the new Disney digital masters with subtitles, and they’re twice the height of the letterbox. I’m sorry, but I think not even the completists here will have a use for this, and while I can’t abort at this point, I don’t think I’m going to be uploading these. Sorry, guys.)

Molly, please, do not delete them, wait some time… meanwhile, may you post few screenshots?

Thanks a lot!

I already did, unfortunately. I felt like I was abusing other people’s resources badly enough with the OT (we’re talking about 60 GB of stuff which I had to stash on a friend’s server because I had no room on my own), but it at least had some utility, because of the fact that the OT movies have multiple Japanese dubs. With hardsubbed prequel rips, and they were unquestionably post-2012 masters, I was much more concerned that I’d be wearing out my welcome.

I could, I suppose, give it another shot, but again - hardsubs. One can’t make use of the audio for anything, and one can’t make use of the video for anything, so it’s about 70 GB of wasted space.

Understood. Thanks anyway for the other episodes!

May you give it a try at EP 7? It could be possible it has the IMAX scene intact, and, even with subtitles, given the fact WOWOW has a great quality, it’s always possible to use unaffected frames, and use lower quality versions to remove hardsubs.

7, perhaps - because as you said, it might be an alternate TV version.

In what ways do these look better than the blu rays? Serious question, because wouldn’t the blu rays be the same matter with a higher bitrate?

Author

I dunno, it doesn’t make sense to me either. And not just the bitrate, because WOWOW is mpeg-2.

Bitrate and/or encoder type is not everything… I mean, it is possible that a 20mbps MPEG-2 HDTV source is better than an heavily DNR’ed, or wrongly regraded, or (put something evil here) 30mbps AVC Blu-ray one… is not that common, but still possible.

I get it, it’s just I’ve seen a few people post that the hdtv versions look better than the blu rays and I’m just wanting to know specifically how.

I made some comparisons, and Blu-ray has more clipped whites than HDTV; has a little bit more detail, too, but don’t know what is more noticeable… for projects, I guess it’s always possible to use mainly the BD, and use HDTV when there is too much white clipping. Can’t remember if BD has black crush problems, too; waiting for some experts opinions about all of this.

One thing I could say for sure: WOWOW colors are different from the BD (and from previous HDTV, too).

For the clipped whites, is the broadcast really better than the Blu Ray converted to the correct range as explained by Adywan and done by Neverar for ANH ?

As for the different colors, it will be nice to see few comparisons. But it would be a different grading of the 2004 master which has yet its problems at the beginning, no ?

Thanks for the link; this fact will be taken in account when I’ll use the BD for a restoration. I must admit mine is still shrinkwrapped - as I don’t feel the urgence of watch that version (yet)… so I used PNGs found on the net, that, almost surely, were not corrected!

Grading: if you would like to upload some BD screenshot - with frame number, please, and, to be easier to find, just a frame before or after scene change - I would find the same on WOWOW, and post a screenshot comparison.

I’m downloading the subtitled TFA to one of my own servers (had to move a lot of crud around to make room). The routing isn’t as good to my French servers as it is to my friend’s server in Sweden, but I didn’t want to involve it this time. The file is a monstrous 23.2 GB, and probably not very useful, unless maybe the subtitled alien lines are done in such a way as to be clear…

Alien speech is doublesubbed - both English (in the usual place) and Japanese (in the top right).

I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be looking for, as far as non-2.35:1 scenes go, but I have the TS and have been preparing it for upload.
