VINYLVINYLVINYL!

Author
Time

This is the thread for those who admire this format and refuse to let it die. I started collecting various albums years ago, but did not become a hardcore vinylphile until this summer. I always knew that vinyl was superior, but it was just never convenient and you can't exactly carry around a turntable in your backpack. Or can you?

One day I stumbled across some of my favorite albums (Murmur, Reckoning) ripped from their original pressings...and things were never the same. I finally heard digital files that sounded like my vinyls and not the CD mastering. They even topped the MFSL gold disc versions.

Modern CDs that are completely brickwalled can actually have some depth on their vinyl counterparts. (Accelerate-I'm looking at you.)

Now I just need a turntable...so I can listen to Quad the way it was meant to be heard.

Post thoughts, comments, and latest acquisitions!

U2-Boy. Island first US pressing.

The Who-Who Are You. First US Pressing.

Duran Duran-A View to a Kill. original 45.

I have that pressing of Who Are You.  It sounds amazing.

I also have a 180-gram re-pressing of the mono British version of My Generation that was made a few years ago.  It sounds good to my ears, but I'd love to hear an original pressing to compare.

I might be wrong, but I think Ripplin had a vinyl thread in the past year or so.

Of course, yours has a better title.

Who Are You sounds fantastic-kills the CD remaster. Just wish it had the single edit of the title track. I miss the cursing.

I don't know if anyone else here likes Tally Hall, but I noticed their upcoming second album, Good & Evil, is going to be released on vinyl, in addition to CD and digital download.

When I finally get some new gear, i.e. new amplifier, new belt and new cartridge, I have two records waiting to be blasted at full volume: Magical Mistery Tour and QE2. And a shitload of other records, I'm sick of CDs and Mp3s most of all...

I switched to lossless and CDs. It still isn't enough. It's cheaper to buy original vinyls than it is for CDs. Just don't go into a good mom and pop record store or hit ebay right now. There is so much for so little...that your wallet will die.

My pressing of Who Are You has the uncensored title track ("fucks" and all).  I guess we have different pressings?

Record Surplus, Amoeba, As the Record Turns... I'm very lucky. LA has plenty of options. Ironically I just went to Record Surplus today and picked up:

-Fleetwood Mac, Rumours. (it sounds brand new, I swear I've heard more pops out of a record I just opened)
-Poco, Poco.
-Gregg Allman band, Playin' up a Storm
-Procol Harum, A Salty Dog

$20 well spent! The most expensive was Rumours at only 7 bucks. Not a bad haul, not bad at all.

My collection(s):

Primary collection for downstairs. There's a gap on the top shelf because...

I just set up one in my room! My dad upgraded our receiver, so I took the old one - and thus the old record player. That's my collection of "things I need to listen to / beyond favorites", still being filled up.

Silly me. For some reason I was thinking that the edited song was on the album. Why I do not know.

still sticking with CDs.  I can't play a record in my car.   Also CDs last longer.

I've got 78s from the 1930s, they may not be portable but they are a lot longer lasting than optical discs and much easier to repair too.

I would be very surprised if as many CDs would be playable in 2060something.

I have a few vinyls. Mostly The Flaming lips, Radiohead, and In The Aeroplane Over The Sea are the ones I listen to.

I inherited a very hefty record collection from my uncle, which included tons of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Grand Funk, various Neil Young projects, and three Jimi Hendrix albums (among lots of others), but I've also supplemented it myself with all of the Beatles' albums from Rubber Soul up through Abbey Road, all but two of Pink Floyd's albums, Devo's entire Warner catalog (and the 12" single from Record Store Day this year), a couple of Radiohead (OK Computer and Kid A), Fleet Foxes' album, and several others. I might post a catalog later.

I also own a really big stack of 78's from my grandmother, but I still haven't gotten a chance to look through them all.

I have some John Williams soundtracks on Vinyl.

Return of the Jedi RSO for instance sounds so much better than the 1997 special edition CD they applied harsh noise reduction to.

My collection is far from complete however, i need the indiana jones trilogy, superman, and would also like to collect the scores for star trek 1-6 on LP.

Star Trek VI came out only on  a foreign release LP and is scarce, i would like to get it without paying a king's ransom.

There are some modern soundtracks i think would be great on LP, but don't exist like Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings, or The Scores for Batman Begins and the Dark Knight.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

I have a couple soundtracks-From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, The Living Daylights, 2001, and a slightly beat up copy of the 77 SW double LP. The Bonds are great on both LP and the expanded remastered CDs. 2001 and SW are a dream.

Just won a VG copy of R.E.M.'s Reveal off ebay. A steal for $5 total with shipping.

For those interested, I found a really fantastic blog for digitized vinyl. PM for info.

^What a haul! I remember I got a bargain at Amoeba on Boy one time, because it was an import but the tag was mislabeled as the domestic release (with the stretched faces instead of the boy on the cover). So I saved myself about 17 dollars, according to the price of all the ones with the real cover.

My copy of Reveal came in. It rules.

Also recently picked up:

Duran Duran-original self-titled and Notorious.

Pete Townshend-Empty Glass.

The Who-Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy

Ennio Morricone-A Fistful of Dollars

John Barry-You Only Live Twice

Depeche Mode-Never Let Me Down Again Maxi Single

and R.E.M.'s Green.

I love collecting these...and my wallet demands I stop...for a time..

Figured I dredge up this old thread after some really great recent finds.

David Bowie-Pinups original pressing on good old floppier than a floppy disk dynaflex vinyl.

Sealed copies of R.E.M.'s Out of Time, Monster, and New Adventures In Hi-Fi.

A super rare mono copy of The Third Man score from the early 50's.

The Robert Ludwig mastering of Houses of the Holy. One word: DYNAMIC!

And finally...my own personal holy grail of records:

The Decca label 1st pressing of Who's Next with the original West Coast mastering identified by W-1 in both sides of the deadwax. This is said to be the definitive pressing of the album by audiophiles, as the original master tapes were flown to California directly for the cutting of this specific first edition back in 1971.

All I can say is oh my dear god. The best $10 I've ever spent in my life. I've owned about 20 different copies of this album throughout my life and nothing comes close to the natural detail of this. Just unbelievable quality and dynamic range. You can clearly hear things like never before-Keith Moon's foot on the kick pedal before he comes in on "The Song Is Over", slight breathing on the vocals, extra bits of guitar and piano, and notably much more of The Ox's basslines. Everything has a presence that it never had before. Even in only very good condition it's the best sounding slab of vinyl I own.

I have StationtoStation on vinyl. It came with the Special Edition set.

I also have Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and Abbey Road.
