The MVC cover does look cool - reminds me a little of the 1993 TDC Laserdisc covers. Free trump cards too, eh?

Are you sure it's not just for the different aspect ratios? One for widescreen and one for pan and scan? This was how he released the SEs on VHS. One box set was gold and one was silver.

Exactly. The silver one is widescreen, the golden one is pan-scan.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I thought that too at first, but HMV state they have some sort of exclusive deal in which they are selling the Gold Covers in widescreen as some sort of limited edition.

Generally, films don't get pan and scan releases in the UK anymore (On DVD at least, VHS films still do). Amazon.co.uk doesn't have a listing for the Star Wars Trilogy in pan and scan, so I guess this box set is no exception.

The only countries getting pan-and-scan DVDs of the star wars trilogy are America and Canada. Nowhere else wants them.

Thats because the general public in the United States cannot stand those "black bars" that "take up the whole picture." Dumbasses.

Yep, there was even someone here dumb enough to buy the exclusive to America/Canada pan-and-scan 4:3 Terminator 3. Even crappier than the original.

they should just do away with Pan and Scan...

oh ya and did anyone notice the spines of the discs on the widescreen set?
they're in silver..
gonna look kinda stupid when they're lined up with the PT...

which just proves more that Lucas will release a 6 disc box set encompassing all the movies.... and therefore match them together

I happen to be one the general public "Dumbasses" who happen to love those "black bars" that "take up the whole picture" thank you very much..!!

widescreen is the only way to go

and i'm not the only on who feels that way
it's not the public, it's the film company and distributers who push for the pan and scan shit
no! Try Not! Do, or Do Not, There Is No Try.

i say all in due time....

many video stores have already cut their VHS section in half due to DVD...
sooner or later VHS will be all but gone (except for blank tapes)

Pan and Scan will suffer the same fate as well.... but it will take time for people to realize

Is it because most yanks() don't have widescreen tv's??

In the UK nearly everyone has them now, and most stores really only sell the wide tv's!!
Well I'm not sure if everyone has them, everybody I know does!!

95% + of USians don't have widescreen TVs. I've never been to a friend's place that has had one or know of any friends that do. Widescreen is still very much a theatrical concept although it is starting to gain wider acceptance. Thank Christ it is.

I've been a widescreen advocate since I got the THX Faces edition in widescreen back in 1995. That was about the first time I ever saw that you could buy widescreen in VHS. Then I started trying to buy everything widescreen whenever possible.

My dad was very anti widescreen until my wife and I bought him a DVD player and his first DVD - Starship Troopers (one of his faves) - and showed him how much of the shower scene he was missing with pan and scan. That changed his tune.

He knows now.

I agree, Luke and Dayv. I'm glad he's a fan now. I'm just upset that it took so much convincing and that I had to resort to boobies to get the point across.
