Things that piss me off when opening new DVDs

There are two minor, yet extremely annoying things, that happen a lot when I'm opening DVDs:

*When taking off the security seals, I have to pick so hard that I stretch the plastic cover.
*These same annoying things leave behind a sticky residue that then gets stuck to DVDs next to it on my shelf.
*When the paper cover insert is set in a little too high or too low and taking off the seals rips it.

But most of all... I REALLY FUCKING HATE when the plastic wrap around the DVD sticks to the fucking spine and there's no way in hell that you can get it all off and you're left with a DVD spine with blotchy plastic all over it.

Preach it Reverend!!
The last batch I bought, I complained about those exact same things to the people around me.

You know, Warner Brother's DVDs seem to use a different adhesive, it comes off very clean, even off those half-paperboard DVD cases they used to use (ex. the original The Mask release).

Yes! It is so annoying! I suppose we can blame shoplifters, but it still seems like overkill! Wouldn't just the outside plastic wrap be enough without those three sealing stickers reminding us that there is a magnetic strip inside the case? On my new OUT DVDs, all three of them stuck to the spine like you complained about. ESB was the only one whose sticky things like residue. I have found a somewhat useful trick for keeping the cover paper from ripping if it's too high or low. Rather than come at it from the bottom, cut a hole at the top and take it off from there. I've found that it doesn't tear up as often that way.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming... Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The spine on my copy of ESB looks horrible, too. The plastic wrap incasing the DVD stuck to the spine and when I pulled the plastic wraping off it left little pieces of plastic and glue residue on the spine.

I agree with everything above. Also, the tricky little 'kid proof' snap tabs on the right side seem to be all the rage lately. I can never figure out why the hell the damn thing won't open.

Is that why they're there? I didn't know DVDs were a danger to children. But I've been fond of them. I don't know why, but I just think they're cool.

I hate the new DVD packaging trend where Disc 2 lies on the bottom of the pack, and Disc 1 lies so that it half-way overlaps it. This way I have to remove Disc 1 whenever I want to get to Disc 2.

Sin City Re-Cut , AC/DC Family Jewels, and the Apocalypse Now Complete Dossier are examples of this, and it makes me want to punch someone whenever I see it. GAAAAAAAAAH!

I actually like the new 'Apocalypse Now' packaging! I only watch the original theatrical version, so I just leave it on top. I thought it looked cool, but I see what you mean.

I thought the kid proof tabs were just on Disney DVD's to keep kids from taking them out and scratching them, but I also found them on 'Sean of the Dead' and 'Batman Begins'.

The first DVD I remeber seeing the kidproof tabs on was Shrek 2.

Did you get a different version of the Apocalypse Now DVDs? Because the version I got had Act 1 of both movies on Disc 1, and Act 2 of both movies on Disc 2, so I always have to switch discs mid-movie. What idiot came up with that idea?

Blame shoplifters? Nobody steals DVDs nowadays! If you want to steal it, just download it on the internet...

I could (or should) have stolen Empire when I bought it today. I went to Meijer and did the self-checkout thing, but forgot to swipe it to de-magnatize the security thing inside it, so I beeped when I went through the doors. The lady asked me if I bought any electronic thing, and I said a DVD, and she told me to just go. I could have just stuck the DVD in my bag, bought $3 worth of food and said the same thing.

My copies of ANH and ESB are like that. ROTJ probably will be too.

I find it very weird that you had the same sticky situation with Empire, Gaffer. I didn't have it with Star Wars, so I figured I wouldn't have it here. Wonder if I'll get it with Jedi.

I know what you folks mean about the residue from the security seals sticking to the package. I bought the American Pie UE a few months ago and had an awful time trying to get the seals off, and when I did, there was funky residue all over the sides. I ended up trading it to Blockbuster and getting everything I paid back in credit (I bought it for $7.00 at a supermarket, so no loss).

The people who used to be in charge of airport security before they federalized it are now in charge of manning the shoplifting beepers in stores, I swear. I have NEVER had a package checked when I've beeped it. Granted, I've never stolen, but the anti-theft technology has become little more than white noise. Meanwhile, I just want to open a package with ease.

I'm surprised they haven't started packaging DVD cases inside those annoying plastic bubbles that you have to use a box-cutter to get into. You know, the stuff they use to package $5 cables and whatnot ... I'm going to slice my hand opening one of those things one day and then I'll have my day in court.

It's Big Brother and his blasted spy satelites making sure we have to work not only for the money we use to buy our entertainment, but to even open it!

It must be that satisfying click.

You know, I think it is!

I only have two DVDs that are like that, actually: The Incredibles and Serenity. The one thing that bugs me is that I know if I keep playing with them they're going to snap off eventually. They do have a slight fragility to them.

I'm a big fan of the slim cases mainly for just that fact. I too like the "click" but I'm not too fond of the "snap" when placing a dvd onto the peg. Seems to me one of those dvd's is just going to "snap" in two doing that someday. Thankfully it hasn't happened yet. *knock on wood*

I'm not used to those click snap things, I rented a DVD a while back and I wasn't expecting those things, I had never seen a DVD with them before. I was having a hard time getting the stupid thing open until one of them went flying through the air then I realized it had clasps on the side. It flew off pretty easily so I probably wasnt the first person to rent that movie and not notice the clasps.

Okay, so the bits of plastic that get stuck to the spine that you never get off again, when did that start? None of my older DVDs have that, and just about all my new ones do. I swear the movie/music industry is trying to screw us over in every way possible. It is probably part of a plot to get us disatisfied with our DVD packaging so that we are more accepting of the new upcomiing strictly digital age. I display my video collection on my shelf in pride, I'm not looking forward to it becoming just a list of links on my start menu to online files that I will have to access with a key or password.

I hate it when I open a boxset and see that the discs are stacked on top of each other in such a way that the discs on top get scratched by the discs below them, who approved this stupid and somehow popular design?

SITTING ON THE SHELF SHOULD NOT DAMAGE MY DVDS!!!!!

I hate it when I realize they are DVD's and not blu-rays.
