I need a test clip from both 4K and Mondo BD - if someone could provide them, I'll test the ColourMatch immediately!

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

How about i grab this shot we've been looking at and PDB get maybe a minutes worth of a nighttime scene or darker scene from both Mondo and 4k?

Uncompressed video and no sound needed

Excellent idea. The nighttime/interior scenes may require different regrade settings.

I follow only this forum daily, but sometimes I visit some others to understand the point of view of the "outsiders" (read: the ones who doesn't even know what a fan preservation project is); lately, on an italian AV forum (maybe the most important one) I read the following:

Dettagli sul restauro de "Il Buono, il Brutto e il Cattivo"

Il restauro è stato fatto dal laboratorio "L'Immagine Ritrovata" della cineteca di Bologna in 4K. Per il colore hanno usato una o due copie Technicolor dell'epoca come riferimento e hanno consultato l'assistente cameraman Sergio Salvati: è stato lui a insistere per la correzione colore virata al giallo, sostenendo che quello fosse il modo in cui Leone lo aveva voluto e pensato.

Details on the restoration of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"

The restoration was done by the workshop "L'immagine Ritrovata" Cinematheque of Bologna in 4K. For the color they used one or two
Technicolor copies of the era as a reference and they have consulted the assistant cameraman Sergio Salvati: he was the one who insisted on correcting color faded to yellow, arguing that this was the way in which Leone had wanted and thought.

Well, this is what HE said... but, is it the truth? Maybe he lie, or he remembers wrong things, or who knows... at the end, one man decided that THIS color grading is the right one, and he's not even the director or the director of photography... next time, maybe they will ask the girl next door... (^^,)

If Sergio Salvati surmised that SL wanted his film bathed in such an extreme yellow, wouldn't IB Technicolor prints reflect this as well?

That's right and that's why that print POITA found is a big deal. It should look like the 4K (but I don't think it will). Frankly, no one knows for sure till that IB Tech print can be bought (if it can)

I would be fine with a little yellow. The Mondo has it over the old MGM but this is just a radical change. I have a bigger problem with the greenish colors more then the yellow. The sky is all over the place on the 4K. White is all wrong. I mean look at the first frame:

Which is a shame because the scan's detail is beautiful.

And of course then there is the mono...

Andrea, I will get together the scene that djchaseb posted (page 2) earlier for you to work with. The one with Tuco driving the stagecoach to the mission at night and meeting the blockade. Are people on that Italian AV board upset over the colors or are they cool with them?

I'm glad you posted this! When I first popped my copy in, I couldn't believe it.  You can't tell me it was originally like this on the Technicolor IB lol

Very greenish, to be white... (^^,)

On the italian forum, some like the new color grading, while few think is completely wrong... I just made a provocative post there, just to know what they think about the IB Tech print.

Mono track: I thought to use the laserdisc, but as it is only 162min, I should take the missing parts from another source; for that, I also thought about the additional scenes found in the laserdisc, where there is no italian dialog, but frankly I don't know how much could I use of them...

The green is definitely there too. During the opening credits, some nighttime/interior scenes and in the desert. Look at Blondie's teeth when Tuco catches up with him at Shorty's hanging. Not right.

never seen greenish/yellow eyebrows before, apart the teeth... (^^,)

Maybe in the Matrix :)

Ah yes! That makes perfect sense.....this all must be taking place within the Matrix...any minute Blondie will get a call and get out

Two more images from the IB TECH.

I need to get back to the seller, is there any interest in securing this?

If funds could be raised to secure the print, I can scan it @ 4K.

We could then register the print to the BD using Elastix, and take the chroma from the print, and apply it to the BD.

Alternatively we can use the 'match grade' function in Nuke or Resolve to pretty much automatically grade the BD to match the print, then just touch up any tricky bits.

The print can be sold when the project is done, so at least a reasonable portion of the money would be recouped.

I can try, but I don't think it will shift much.

I would say we could easily re-sell the print at the end of the process, although it is in Italian, which might limit the mainstream audience.

I don't know how much we would get back, but probably a reasonable amount, if not all. These things are hen's teeth.

Sorry poita, I can't help you out getting that print, money is tight and i'd never hear the end of it from my wife.

I'm doing what I can working on this 4k remaster though, slowly improving (I hope) my settings. Here are three screencomparisons with the latest settings:
