How to get around copy protection?

My uncle recently bought my grandmother a Magnavox VCR/DVD+RW combo (Model MWR20V6). Now, already I'm thinking of all the stuff I have on VHS that hasn't officially come out on DVD, that I want to preserve. But the manual says that it can only record between formats as long as the original VHS or DVD I'm trying to copy does not have copy protection. Some of the stuff I want to preserve DOES have copy protection, so what can I do about it?

And as an aside, does anyone know if this player has a code to disable region lock?

EDIT: And yes, I've been to Google. Found nothing.

Best Buy and other such stores will have a "Video Cleaner/Enhancer/whatever" for about $50. Plug this in between your two VCRs, or VCR and DVD recorder, and it will remove the macrovision signal.

As for the DVD, DVDShrink will remove most forms of copy protection. For the newer stuff, you'll need to run AnyDVD in the background first. That's a $20 program.

DVD43 works 100% I think. From memory, "AnyDVD" actually just uses DVD43 to remove the protection.

For VHS with "copy protection," I think all you need to do is to tape a piece of tape over that empty square spot.

That's only if you want to record on the tape again

JamesEightBitStar - for VHS to DVD - You'll need to find a DVD recorder that can be hacked to turn off MACROVISION (Some Lite-on's and Toshiba's) then you'll be able to record VHS to DVD. I have a Lite-on LVW-5005 that just needed a firmware upgrade (google search!) now it can honestly record from pretty much any source. Yes, you can get some hardware that allows you to "Clarify" or "Copy" but you'll still come across tapes that will not copy (not sure why but it happens) - ANOTHER great option is to get a capture card for your PC/MAC and capture directly to your computer uncompressed then encode to your desire.
