Help: looking for... The Twilight Zone: The Movie Preservation?

Author
Time
 (Edited)

I’m just wondering if anyone has seen any effort to preserve this movie. To my knowledge, it was only released on VHS, so anyone with a decent capture card setup could probably convert it.

If anyone knows anywhere where this has been created on DVD or if anyone is interested in preserving it, please let me know.

there was a LD by Warner, in full screen

Aha!
eBay

Thanks for the tip!

I'd be willing to buy that if I could find someone to to a transfer...

I also saw some DVDs and VCDs on eBay... Who knows what the quality of those are though...

EDIT: Cancel that, I forgot that the LD is Full Screen...

Hmm... Perhaps it might be worth it just to nab one of those widescreen eBay copies...

The tech specs listed for it on IMDB:

Camera
Panaflex Cameras and Lenses by Panavision

Film negative format (mm/video inches)
35 mm

Cinematographic process
Spherical

Printed film format
35 mm

Aspect ratio
1.85 : 1

Does that mean it was filmed in 4:3 and cropped for widescreen, or filmed with an anamorphic lens?

All 1.85:1 movies are cropped from 1.33:1. It's either hard-matted, which means it's cropped when first run through the projector (i.e., the remainder of the film is never exposed, so you have a non-anamorphic 1.85:1 image on a 1.33:1 frame), or it's soft-matted and done after, so the whole 1.33:1 frame is recorded. If this is the case, the director's intent is for it to be shown in 1.85:1 anyway, as they often even go so far as to put cardboard on the monitor to cover the frame. As such, the widescreen is the INTENDED aspect ratio, and the rest of the frame often even has boom mikes and other such mistakes showing. One movie (can't recall the name), a character is supposed to be naked, but in the "unmatted" fullscreen version it is very clear that he is wearing boxers, ruining the scene entirely.

So, widescreen's still the way to go.

Cleese in Wanda.

Sometimes, though, it all goes into paranoia and studios release matted versions of films that are SUPPOSED to be open matted, just so they can announce "W I D E S C R E E N ! ! !" on the box. A recent example I remember is the American rerelease of "Return of the Joker"...

It's odd this was never remastered, as many Warner's titles were reissued on LD in the mid to late 90's. You'd think something with Spielberg involved would have some weight behind it, (as literally all his other old movies seem to be on DVD now) unless some rights problems have reared their ugly head elsewhere.

Where were you in '77?

Well, the movie itself is infamous since Vic Morrow died during the filming of it, though I don't know if that would have anything to do with it...

I'm currently awaiting a response from someone who said he has a widescreen capture from a broadcast that is a higher resolution source than an LD, so we'll see about that... In the meantime, I'll probably buy that LD tomorrow if I can get someone who'd be willing to transfer it...

You might want to ask dark_jedi if he would transfer it, he does some nice straight LD to DVD transfers.

hey guys.. i've got a fairly decent capture of this that I encoded from digital satellite. it's PAL, though.

my transfer is..

sky+ digital satellite > AV cables > Canopus ADVC-100 > firewire > iMovie (raw DV) > mpeg-2 (dual pass VBR).

it's encoded in anamorphic widescreen.

if that floats anybody's boat, then please let me know and we can get something done with it

Well, the LD transfer is on hold for now since someone already bought the LD on eBay...

><

But, geekroick, that could be better than any LD, since if it's from a digital satellite, it should be the same raw resolution (unless I'm wrong) as an LD. So if you still have the transfer handy, or better yet, the raw files, I'd be very interested in whipping up a DVD with menus, disc art, a cover and such.

Thanks!

That PotA episode was very well done. Great find!

I got my eBay copy of the movie in today. Halfway decent quality.

possibly the best moment of the whole movie... heh heh heh.

(this isn't the whole image, i cropped out the right hand side because it was just black, and i wanted to get the full resolution and not stretch the board too much.. )

Aha! So your transfer is FAR better, heh.
Did you make menus and such for the DVD? If not, is there any way you could send a copy my way (in whatever format you have that is the highest quality) so I could fancy it up and share it? If so, send me a PM.

Thanks!

Nobody wants to hear this. But I have the footage from the accident with Vic Morrow and the kids.
Pretty gruesome might I add. Its from a VHS compilation called "Death Scenes 2" (kinda like "Faces of Death" but without
the faked parts). I personally wouldn't put it on a dvd of this kind but.....

Well....

Nevermind!

Ever since I read about the story of the filming, I've been morbidly curious about that footage, and if it survived, or what. What kind of comp is that? Is there anything else on it related to a filming accident? (I'm not aware of any other occurance like the TZ one) And was that something in videostores, like Faces of Death, or like, some underground thing or something?
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

Well, I ended up seeing part of it by accident (I was trying to find the TZ movie) and from what I saw, it really isn't gruesome at all. All you really see are some shapes and the chopper fall. The creepy thing is pretty much just having the knowledge that you're watching three people die.

EDIT: Oh, and yeah, definately not going on the DVD, heh.

Also, as an update, unless I'm mistaken, geekroick is sending me a copy of his source my way so I can pretty it up with menus and release it.
