I do in fact have this! It is most definitely cropped top and bottom, and has a  pretty rough transfer of the film. Definitely watchable, and at the time it was the best available. I haven't bought the 2011 DVD, hoping (probably in vain) that a US Blu-ray might appear. You mentioned you were working from the 2011 DVD. What about the UK Blu-ray? I've pondered getting it, assuming it is actually that much better quality than the DVD.

One thing I noticed about your Televista DVD, is that Johan (despite being called "Yohan" in this release) is still called "Sir John" (or simply "John") up until the scene where he, Peewit, and the first Smurf they meet, cross the bridge to the village. Perhaps the rare TV edit (which we still need to find) has "Yohan" in all scenes...

Sadly, I don't have that Chinese DVD anymore because it was a library interloan DVD, plus I don't remember which one I got it from (its been three years since I've attempted a project like this). Odd they would've had such a release; the library prolly didn't know what DVD they were ordering because of the Smurfs movie mad rush when those CGI messes were out.

I'm pretty certain that DVD was a bootleg, because I seem to remember English audio only (only subs for 10 other Asian languages I don't fraken know), LOLing over the engrishy synopsis, and being shocked by the horrid encoding quality. Trust me, i wouldn't use that as it was just as worse as the U.S Shout! Factory port of the U.K release.

Would any Japanese DVD or Laserdisc be worth looking into? These may be the U.S versions, but I can't be certain. I also remember viewing the rare Televista DVD at one point and that seemed similar (read: VHS quality, severe macroblocking) to the Chinese bootleg DVD I worked with.

Well, in terms of a Japanese DVD or laserdisc, do you know where to find one in particular? (I don't know if there's even a Japanese dubbing that even exists, but let's hope so...)

I don't know if a JP dub exists (or existed at one point but got lost/destroyed), but U.S import films are kept in their original language on Japanese video releases while being (HARD) subtitled. I did a search on many auction websites and the like and nothing comes up for a JP release othert than imports of the U.K releases, but it could be very hard to find like the JP laserdisc of Song of The South. I only brought that up if you needed a (possibly) better source for the U.S credits and audio. 

Shame that no one smart enough to start a team preservation on here grabbed that 16mm print from a while back.

I edited and restored a screencap of the untouched ending scene with Peewit throwing a tantrum from the 2010 DVD, using Photoshop. I don't know if I'm going to be able to do the same thing for the actual video, as I'm unsure how to do so yet.

In case any of you are wondering about where I got the DVD footage of the original US opening titles and ending credits; I actually found another rare DVD copy of this dub somewhere on the web, though it actually had the French dub accompanied with a Polish voice-over for the audio. This copy actually has a less rough and more cleaner video transfer compared to the 2008 Televista edition, so I'm assuming that it's from the unofficial "Collector's Edition" mentioned on BlueBuddies website (the cover is below), though I could be wrong. Feel free to reply and comment below! ;-)

 Geez, do you HAVE to follow me EVERYWHERE, Archiplex? And no, I already said that I don't know how to do the entire video yet; this kind of task would involve a more advanced video editing software (not like iMovie).

So, wait...it's got the US opening titles and ending credits, but dubbed in French...with Polish voice-over?  I'm confused...

Well, the version made in Polish is the French dub with a Polish voice-over. The particular U.S. copy I mentioned I found on the web was a fan-made edit with the audio from the Polish version synchronized with the video.

But how about the original Italian 1st dub soundtrack without the Gruppo Trenta dub audio of Peewit's final line? Geez, I hope to find the entire Gruppo Trenta dub of this movie soon....

I wonder why the Italian DVD has only the 1st dub. Also, does the Gruppo Trenta dub have the translated opening titles?

Does anyone still need a 35mm print to this? I do have one myself, broken up into four reels three are on cores while one is on a steel reel. I bought it may years back because it was a favorite film of mine but never done much with it since I don’t have the means to project it, let alone get it transfer to video. The color of it is pretty decent though it’s missing a few frames/seconds between each reel where the cue marks would be seen during the film (this is typical of theater prints often being splice and re-spliced constantly). I’m sure it might still come in handy if someone has an interest in nit.

I don’t have Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere Pro to do that.

Heyo, I’m new here, and I like the idea of one of those types of “Edits” where multiple source from a film are used to make a definitive edition. 😄

But is there a way that I can request these if anyone has them? Please PM me if you can.

• TV version where a part of the movie is shifted to the beginning
• 2008 Rare Televista DVD of the movie with the 2nd USA English dub
• That Chinese bootleg DVD mentioned with English audio (USA Dub?)
• Fullscreen bootleg DVD with VHS quality of USA dub version

If anyone has these and can PM me with those versions, that would be appreciated. 😃 (I would prefer them to be ripped with DVD Decrypter and put into a .zip or something if possible)

EDIT: Hopefully someone can get that print and transfer it or something. I’m curious to see how it looks while playing.
