The Secret of NIMH 3

Long story short, the first Secret of NIMH was over too soon for me, and the second Secret of NIMH wasn't over soon enough.  With the first NIMH leaving me wanting more, I couldn't let the franchise end with...  with...  This!

One of the first things I wanted (which I realize is probably a very bad idea) was to bring back Jonathan Brisby.  What?  He got this heartbreaking introduction at the beginning (making me think the movie was about Jonathan), and it turned out he wasn't as big a plot point as I was led to believe.  My latest plot involves a dark, rodent-eating cloud that swallowed not just Jonathan, but also Nicodemus and Jenner, etc.  I don't really want to use this plotline; I've written stories before.  After awhile, I lose interest in a story after I'm almost done with it, and then I abandon it, and later, when I look back at it, I'm thinking "This is the worst thing ever written!"  I don't want to repeat that, and I don't want to be like George Lucas and push a bad plot forward into a movie.

That being said, I'd like to work with someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to writing to make this possible.  Green Penguino has already taken an interest in this, so I think he'll be the one to work with me.  If anyone else wants to join, too, they're free to do so.

With that out of the way, I'll start off with what I definitely want in the script:

No Timmy to the Rescue tie-ins, other than references to it being a bizzarre dream that Timothy had when he had pneumonia.

The film will star Mrs. Brisby no more than a year after the original Secret of NIMH.  (Elizabeth Hartman is dead, so a new actress will be required for this role)

The film will co-star Racso from the second and third Rats of NIMH books.  If you aren't familiar with the books, I'll be happy to provide some details of his character, at the expense of spoilers for the Rats of NIMH books.

Jeremy will be established as the head of a family, seeing as the last shot of the first film was one of him with "Miss Right."  (With Dom Delouise's passing, a new actor will be required for this role)

Martin is established to have a girlfriend named Breta.

Justin and Mrs. Brisby DO NOT HAVE ANY ROMANTIC INVOLVEMENT!!!  I hate all of that online fan art and stuff with them having romance.  In the books, Justin marries a rat named Beatrice, while Mrs. Brisby remains a widow.  For the most part, we do this thing by the book(s)!

And now, whoever is interested, let's work out the plot!

Nobody's interested, huh?  I don't wanna have to write this myself and have it end up being a load of manure.  Yes, it'd be better than Timmy to the Rescue, but probably just as bad as the Star Wars Prequels.

I saw the Secret of Nimh when I was a very young child. I was delighted when my kindergarten teacher gave me a Secret of Nimh book. I remember really liking it. Now, however, I don't remember anything about it. And I certainly didn't see the second one. But I cheer you on! And hopefully I'll be more inspired to sit down and watch it again one of these days.

The blue elephant in the room.

Great that you've seen The Secret of NIMH.  Here's the official thread for it, approved by TV's Frink:

I hope I can get someone good at writing to help me with this.  If necessary, I'll post my own idea for the movie.

Okay, fine then.  Here's the first part of my version:

One day, in the late summer of 1982 (or 1983), Justin comes to the Fitzgibbons' farm to search for the Brisbys.  Failing to find them in their block, he comes across Breta, who leads him to the Brisbys.

Meanwhile, in the city, we introduce Racso, possibly during a scene where he's stealing food or something.  Racso is established as a playboy.  He and his mother live in the city.

Racso was born by accident after a sex innuendo between Jenner and whoever Racso's mother is.  Jenner hated Racso and wanted to kill him ever since he was born, but the mother wouldn't allow it.  She and Racso left the rosebush shortly after that (This allows for Jenner's death AND the existence of Racso).  Racso eventually decides that he wants to see the Rats of NIMH again (Maybe because he hears they're opening a school, maybe because he wants to see his father), and he sneaks away.

Meanwhile, in their summer home inside a tree trunk, the Brisbys (Mrs. Brisby, Teresa, Martin, Timothy, and Cynthia) are having a typical morning, when Breta and Justin arrive.  Justin tells the Brisbys that the Rats of NIMH are building a village in Thorn Valley, as well as a school.  They want little Timothy to join.  The other children are invited as well, if they want to help out.

Justin confides privately with Mrs. Brisby that Thorn Valley and the surrounding area is in potential danger, and that the real reason he came was to warn her and ask for her help (since she's the only mouse they know and can trust; her small size could be used to an advantage).  Mrs. Brisby agrees to help the Rats of NIMH.

Jeremy is shown as the head of a family.  He's still with Miss Right (Who knows what we'll name her?), and they have a son.

Racso comes to the Fitzgibbons' farm, searching the rosebush the Rats used to live in for an opening.  (Unbeknownst to Racso, this is actually a different rosebush; the first one got bulldozed away)  Jeremy arrives, attempts to help Racso get in, and gets hurt in the process.  A yelp of pain from Jeremy wakes up Dragon the Cat, and Dragon attacks.  Jeremy saves Racso, and after a conversation, Racso finds out the Rats of NIMH are in Thorn Valley.  Racso offers a candy bar to Jeremy, but for some reason he only takes the foil wrapper.

Jeremy comes to the Brisbys and they're ready to leave.  They climb onto Jeremy like so:

sn-cover

During the flight to Thorn Valley, at the break of night, a hawk attacks.  Timothy is wounded and falls off.  After losing the hawk and failing to find Timothy in the darkness of night, the Brisbys continue to Thorn Valley.

Timothy comes back around, and finds he's being taken care of by Racso.

Jeremy and the Brisbys arrive at Thorn Valley (which, BTW, gets a big, dramatic reveal and will not be anywhere NEAR as sophisticated as in Timmy to the Rescue) and inform Justin that Timmy is gone.  Justin assembles two search parties (One for him and one for Mrs. Brisby) to search for him.  (Brutus doesn't talk and he still has no pupils)

Mrs. Brisby's team finds a bonfire in the middle of the forest (courtesy of Racso).  There's an action scene here to put it out.

Justin's team finds Racso and Timothy.  They bring them to Thorn Valley.

Timothy is taken to the infirmary, and the Brisbys are given housing.  Later, a village-wide meeting is held, where Justin explains the danger to Thorn Valley.  He subsequently introduces Racso and calls for Racso's father/someone to lodge him.  Nobody claims Racso/Nobody will lodge Racso, so Mrs. Brisby allows him to live with them.

Racso and Mrs. Brisby go the infirmary (meeting Isabella on the way), and see Timothy all healed up.  They take them to their Thorn Valley house, and the next day, they all do their part for Thorn Valley.

The next day, Timothy and Racso start school, Cynthia goes to a nursery, Teresa helps Isabella in the kitchen, and Martin is stuck working in the gardens, with a nasty rat named Bertha bossing him around.  ("She makes the Shrew look like an angel!" he would say about it)

That's all I'll share for now.  There's more, but I don't think it'll be any good.

Just an observation from someone who's spent a lot of time thinking about stories and how to write them- Story is not just a sequence of things happening.  It's about something.  Figure out what your story is about, then use scenes to build that something.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

I know that.  I've known that for years.  I said in the post that this was only the first part of the story.

The rest of it IS about something: trying to save the Rats' Village from the rising river, caused by an evil cloud.  The following quote is copied from my first post:

My latest plot involves a dark, rodent-eating cloud that swallowed not just Jonathan, but also Nicodemus and Jenner, etc.

That's the "something" this story was about.  Was being the keyword.

Originally, the story continued like so:

Justin and the Rats' chief engineer, Arthur, assemble two search parties.  One of them goes upstream, to see if the rising was caused by a new or increased source of water, and the other goes downstream, to see if the rising was caused by a dam being built.  Neither team came back positive.  There was no logical reason for the river to rise.  This was very puzzling.

In another meeting, Racso has an idea: dam up the river to stop the flow.  Justin thought idea had merit, and said that they would try it.

Later, on a slope near the river, the adult rats and Mrs. Brisby are piling rocks onto a large plank propped up by a stick.  Once enough rocks were piled, the weight of the rocks would break the sticks, and the rocks would tumble into the river, hopefully blocking the flow.

Racso, against his will, had to stay behind.  However, he sneaked away to where the dam was being made to find a way to help.  He ends up RIGHT IN THE LINE OF FIRE of the rocks.  Mrs. Brisby and Justin try desperately to save Racso.  Justin saves Racso, but Mrs. Brisby got crushed by a rock.  She was killed.

That night, Racso found out that his latest stunt had single-handedly orphaned four young mice.  Teresa, Martin, and Cynthia would be sent back to the Fitzgibbons' farm, and Timothy would stay at Thorn Valley to complete his education.  Then he, too, would be sent to the Fitzgibbons' farm.  After Teresa, Martin, and Cynthia left, Racso is overcome with grief and regret.

In the middle of the night, a dark cloud with a flickering red core comes to the Rats' dam.  It extends two pseudopods to the dam, and the dam collapses, letting the river continue to rise freely.  Then, it hovers over Mrs. Brisby's corpse not too far off, and begins to consume it.

Later, Racso is flying on Jeremy to see the Great Owl, with suicide on his mind.  When he gets to the Owl's hole in the tree, he finds it deserted until the Owl suddenly swoops down and lands.  The Owl had just finished feeding, so he had no purpose in killing Racso.  But the Owl did say that Mrs. Brisby was alive, though he won't tell how he knows this.  He tells Racso that the next time he sees Mrs. Brisby, he must do whatever she tells him to do, if Thorn Valley was to be rescued.  The Owl then goes to sleep, and Racso leaves the Owl with a new purpose.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Brisby wakes up inside the cloud.  Nicodemus, a wise old rat Mrs. Brisby knew had died, is with her.  Nicodemus tells Mrs. Brisby that the cloud is evil, and must be stopped.  He tells her that the cloud consumes and revives dead rodent corpses (including Nicodemus, Jenner, and Mrs. Brisby's husband, Jonathan) and uses their life to support its own.  Nicodemus tells Mrs. Brisby how to stop the cloud.  It involves Hawk's eggs and The Stone. (The Stone is the golden necklace with the ruby in the center)  Nicodemus has enough energy to open a hole in the cloud big enough only for a mouse to go through.  Mrs. Brisby goes through it, and ends up on a cliff near a hawk's nest (which, at the time, only carried three eggs) at dawn.

Racso was scurrying back to the Rat Village nearby, and Mrs. Brisby calls to him.  She tells him that they need to get the nest down from the cliff.  Racso complies and heads back to Thorn Valley, while Mrs. Brisby is stuck way up on the cliff, with no way to get down.

After Racso returns to the Rat Village, he tries to get Justin's help, but to no avail.  Racso tells his friend, Christopher, about it, and Christopher wants to show him something.

Christopher leads Racso to a cave deep in the woods, and shows him two human children.  A small one named Artie and a large, fat one named Margaret.  After a bit of written communication between the rats and the children, they agree that the children could live with the rats if the children helped save the Rats' Village.

So, if you've read RT, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH, you'll probably guess that Margaret is the one to scale the cliff and bring down the nest and Mrs. Brisby.

After that, the children are brought to the Rat Village.  The plan was that they would stay there until their family was found.  After that they would KEEP THIS PLACE A SECRET.

The next day, Justin is walking through the woods with a rat named Beatrice, when he notices that the water is rising even more rapidly than before.  They run back to the village to evacuate the rats.

The Rat Village is evacuated as the water rises.  They just barely get everyone out safely.  Racso ends up using The Stone to drain the flood and use whatever the Hawk's eggs were for to destroy the cloud.  (Stupid and absurd, isn't it?  I might just cut out the whole RT Margaret thing altogether)

Immediately after Racso saves Thorn Valley, all of the Cloud's captives fall to the ground unconscious.  Mrs. Brisby is ecstatic to see Jonathan again.  Racso sees his father, Jenner.  Jenner wakes up, and is more interested in The Stone than his own son.  There is a fist-fight between Jenner and Justin.  Jenner ends up meeting a second death.

After that, Artie and Margaret are found by their parents.  With their parents, was Dr. Schultz, who just so happened to be camping with them.  Dr. Schultz swiftly captures as many of the Rats as he could, among which are Justin, Brutus, and Racso.  Also captured were Jonathan and Mrs. Brisby.

At NIMH, Dr. Schultz put his latest captures into cages that even the super-intelligent, super-strong Rats of NIMH couldn't escape from.  Dr. Schultz had been obsessed with finding the Rats for the past five/six years, and now, he was finally able to complete the experiments.  A final injection was given to the Rats to give them the ability to talk.  The very first thing was said by Justin: cursing directed at Dr. Schultz.

After this, there are many goings-on, one of which bringing the Rats issue to court (?) and then a happy ending of some sort.

So there you have it, the rest of the story.  If you aren't familiar with Secret of NIMH, then you may not get what's going on, but you should get the general idea.  C.  R.  A.  P.

The reason I don't like this is at all because I wrote it.  If anything strikes you as stupid, please, let me know.  I wanna know JUST how bad I am at writing.
